iv
What I Need to Know

In your previous module, you have learned about the two methods of solving
quadratic equations. This module will be the continuation of that lesson. It is best
for you if you already mastered solving quadratic equation by extracting square roots
and by factoring before proceeding to this module.

This module will present the two additional methods in solving quadratic equations
which will help you in developing your problem-solving skills.

After going through this module, you are expected to solve quadratic equations in 4
different ways. More specifically, you should be able to:

1. solve quadratic equations by completing the squares (M9AL-Ia-b-1); and

2. solve quadratic equations using the quadratic formula (M9AL-Ia-b-1).

Let us see if you already have knowledge about quadratic equations by

answering the following tasks below.

Lesson
Solving Quadratic Equations
3 by Completing the Squares
The simplest method to solve quadratic equation is by extracting the square roots of
the equation. However, we can only use the extracting square roots method if and
only if the quadratic equations are in the form 𝑎𝑥 2 = 𝑐 and (𝑎𝑥 + 𝑐 )² = 𝑑 where a, c
and d are real numbers and 𝑎 ≠ 0. Thus, we cannot use extracting the square roots
method if the quadratic equation is on the form 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0 wherein, there is a
linear term bx. Let us consider the equation 𝑥 2 = 4, since this equation is on the form
𝑎𝑥 2 = 𝑐, we can use the extracting method to solve this equation. However, in the
equation like 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 1 = 0, we cannot use the extracting method since there is a
linear term, 2x, but we can solve that equation by factoring method since the
equation is factorable.

However, there are quadratic equations that neither on the form of 𝑎𝑥 2 = 𝑐 nor
factorable. In this kind of quadratic equation, we need to use another method which
is the completing the square method.

What’s In

Let us check your knowledge that will help you in this module by answering the

Activity 2: Be a hero!
During this time of Covid-19 pandemic, a group of health workers disinfects a
rectangular area in the barangay. However, the group did not finish the whole
vicinity. They want to know the dimension (length and width) of the whole area, for
them to calculate the needed people and materials to be used. Help them by
computing the length and width of the rectangular place. The area of the place where
already have been disinfected (square) is 64 m ². The white is the unfinished area of
disinfection.

Guide Questions:
1. What is the length of the entire place?
2. What is the width of the entire place?
3. What is the area of whole place?

What is It

When the given quadratic equation can be solved in either extracting square roots or
factoring, use either of the two methods. However, if the given equation cannot be
solved using the two aforementioned methods then it is time to use the method of

Reminders:
When there is no linear term in the given quadratic equation, then the value
of b = 0.

When there is no constant term in the given quadratic equation, then the
value of c = 0.
