History:

The Municipality was founded on April 15, 1578 Earlier historical account claims that the town
known today as Buhi began as a small settlement by refugees fleeing the outrage of Mayon
Volcano hundreds of years ago. These people founded a permanent settlement in an area close
to the lake and flourished as time passed. The general exodus of people fleeing and being able
to escape grave calamities such as Mayon’s eruption was known in local vernacular as “naka-
buhi”. Local lore takes this as the most probable explanation as to how the town acquired its
present name – Buhi. One version of local legend attributes the town being accorded the name
to the time when the first Spaniards came and asked local settlers the name of the area. The
local settlers misunderstood the question as how they came to be there and so gave the
response “Naka-Buhi”.

The Municipality is known for its natural heritage which is the “Lake Buhi”. The lake is located in
a valley formed by Mount Asog and Mount Malinao. It is the center of fishing industry of the
Municipality and one of the main sources of livelihood for the people. Lake Buhi also known to
be one of the homes of the sinarapan which is the world’s smallest commercially harvested fish.

Food:
Buhi Camarines Sur, is known for its “Buhi Lake”. it is famous since it is one of the few bodies
of water that contains the sinarapan which is the world’s smallest commercially harvested fish.
Some dishes that are commonly enjoyed in the region and might have local variations in buhi
nclude:

1. pinalupsi - a mishmash of saba bananas and various root crops cooked in gata with a little
salt. There’s a hint of sweetness from the banana but pair this with the spicy tineouteou na
balao, a Buhi version of Bicol Express that uses small shrimps and you got a wonderful play of
flavors and textures

2. ginisang sinarapan – usually sauteed lightly in oil with tomatoes and onions and goes well
with rice especially if its spiked with chili! Other than sold as dried sheets or cakes, it is also
available in blocks of uncooked sinarapan that is usually frozen.
