HOSPITAL DEPARTMENT AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES

A. HOSPITAL DEPARTMENTS
Hospitals vary widely in their services and, therefore, in their departments.
Hospitals may have acute services such as an emergency department or specialist trauma
center, burn unit, surgery, or urgent care. These may be backed up by more specialist
units such as cardiology or coronary care, intensive care units, neurology, cancer center,
and obstetrics and gynecology.
Some hospitals will also have outpatient departments, while others may have chronic
treatment units such as behavioral health services, dentistry, dermatology, psychiatric
ward, rehabilitation services (Rehab), and physical therapy.

Definitions of Hospital Departments:


1. Accident and Emergency (A&E)
It is for serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies only.
2. Admission
It is a place where the patient will be required to provide personal information and
sign consent forms before being taken to the hospital unit or ward.
3. Anesthetics
It is in charge of administrating anesthetics, sedatives and anaesthetization
4. Burn Center (Burn Unit or Burns Unit)
It is used for the treatment and recovery of patients with more severe burns.
5. Cardiology
It deals with disorders of the heart and the cardiovascular system.
6. Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD)
It is a specialized area responsible for the collection, decontamination,
assembling, packing, sterilization, storing, and distribution of sterile goods and
equipment to patient care areas.
7. Chaplaincy
It offers spiritual guidance and pastoral care to patients and their families
8. Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
It is a hospital ward specialized in the care of patients with heart attacks, unstable
angina, cardiac dysrhythmia, and (in practice) various other cardiac conditions
that require continuous monitoring and treatment.
9. Discharge Lounge
It is a facility where patients can prepare for leaving hospital.
10. Elderly services
It is a specialized medical care for older adults, especially after the age of 60
years.
11. Finance Department
It takes care of all remittance and payments related issues of the patients.
12. Gastroenterology
It investigates and treats upper and lower gastrointestinal diseases.
13. General Services Department (GSD)
It is responsible for the Hospital security, safekeeping of inpatients' belongings,
ambulance transportation of patients/babies, as well as physicians and residents'
accommodation and parking facilities.
14. General Surgery
It refers to a wide range of types of surgery and procedures on patients

It is an area of medicine that involves the treatment of women's diseases,
especially those of the reproductive organs
16. Hematology
It involves the diagnosis and treatment of patients who have disorders of the blood
and bone marrow.
17. Health & Safety
It is used to promote and maintain the highest possible degree of health and safety
for all employees, and physicians, and actively participate in quality, safety, and
risk initiatives.
18. Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
It refers to the specialized treatment given to patients who are acutely unwell and
require critical medical care.
19. Human Resources
It is in charge of all human resource functions, including ensuring that the hospital
complies with all state and federal regulations concerning employee hiring, firing,
benefits, and other human resource issues.
20. Infection Control (CDC)
It prevents or stops the spread of infections in healthcare settings.
21. Information Management
It provides a framework of information services to support all aspects of the
hospital.
22. Maternity
It cares for people who are pregnant before, during, and after the birth of their
babies.
23. Medical Records Department (MRD)
It is in charge of a variety of types of "notes" entered over time by health care
professionals, recording observations and administration of drugs and therapies,
orders for the administration of drugs and therapies, test results, x-rays, reports,
etc.
24. Microbiology
It is a clinical laboratory department providing diagnostic, therapeutic, clinical,
consultation, training, and other supportive services in infectious diseases and
related conditions.
25. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
It is a hospital intensive care unit that specializes in looking after babies who are
born sick or premature.
26. Nephrology
It investigate, diagnose and treat and prevent chronic kidney disease in adults and
children.
27. Neurology
It deals with disorders of the nervous system, such as; the diagnosis and treatment
of all categories of disease involving the central, peripheral, and autonomic
nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue
(such as muscle), brain, spinal cord, and spinal cord injuries (SCI).
28. Nutrition and Dietetics
They provide specialist advice on diet for hospital wards and outpatient clinics.
29. Obstetrics/Gynecology
It deals with the care of women during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the
diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the female reproductive organs.
30. Occupational Therapy
It helps physically or mentally impaired people, including temporary disabilities,
practice in the fields of both healthcare as well as social care.
31. Oncology
It provides a comprehensive medical (non-surgical) service for patients with
cancer or tumor.
32. Ophthalmology
It deals with the diseases and surgery of the visual pathways, including the eye,
hairs, and areas surrounding the eye, such as the lacrimal system and eyelids.
33. Orthopedics
It treats conditions related to the musculoskeletal system, including joints,
ligaments, bones, muscles, tendons, and nerves.
34. Otolaryngology
It deals with disorders involving the Head & Neck region, primarily diseases
afflicting the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT).
35. Pain Management
It helps to treat patients with severe long-term pain.
36. Patient Accounts
It deals to track patient-related services and then receive payment for care.
37. Patient Services
It provides an information service to the general public, patients, staff, and
students of the Hospital via various reception points throughout the hospital and
via telephone and email services.
38. Pharmacy
It is in charge of drugs in a hospital, including purchasing, supply and distribution.
39. Physiotherapy
It provides treatment in circumstances where movement and function are
compromised by injury, disease, aging, or environmental factors.
40. Purchasing & Supplies
It is responsible for the procurement function of the hospital.
41. Radiology
It is a highly specialized, full-service department that strives to meet all patient
and clinician needs in diagnostic imaging and image-guided therapies, such as CT
Scan, MRI, X-ray,
42. Radiotherapy
It is a medical treatment that utilizes high-energy radiation, such as x-rays, gamma
rays, and protons, to destroy cancer cells and shrink or remove tumors.
43. Renal
It offers a wide range of services to people with kidney conditions.
44. Rheumatology
It treats patients or musculoskeletal disorders such as bones, joints, ligaments,
tendons, muscles, and nerves.
45. Sexual Health/Genitourinary Medicine
It provides advice, testing, and treatment for sexually transmitted infections,
family planning care, pregnancy testing and advice, care, and support for sexual
and genital problems.
46. Urology
It investigates areas linked to kidney and bladder conditions.
