The work of preparing Intemational Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. Intemational organizations, governmental and non-governmental, liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the Intemational Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3 Draft Intemational Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting, Publication as an Intemational Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. ‘The Draft Intemational Standard |SO/DIS 5817 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 44, Welding and allied processes, Subcommittee 10, Unification of requirements in the field of metal welding and has been accepted {or parallel public enquiry according to the Vienna Agreement. © ISO 1999 - All rights reserved ISO/DIS 5817 Introduction This Intemational Standard should be used as a reference in drafting of application codes and/or other application standards. It contains a simplified selection of fusion wold imperfections based on the designations given in ISO 6520-1 'Welding and allied processes — Classification of geometric imperfections in metallic materials’ Some imperfections according to ISO 6520-1 have been used directly and some have been grouped together. Tho basic numerical referencing system from ISO 6520-1 has been used. The purpose of this standard is to define typical imperfections which might be expected in normal fabrication. it may be used within a quality system for the production of factory wekled joints. it provides three sets of dimensional values from which a selection can be made for a patticular application. The quality level necessary in each case should be defined by the application standard or the responsible designer in conjunction with the manufacturer, user and/or other parties concerned. The level shall be prescribed before the start of production, preferably at the enquiry or order stage. For special purposes, additional details may to be prescribed. The quality levels given in this standard are intended to provide basic reference data and are not specifically related to any particular application. They refer to the types of welded joints in a fabrication and not to the complete product ‘or component itsolt It is possible, therefore, that different quality levels are applied to individual welded joints in the ‘same product or component. Ht would normally be expected that for a particular welded joint the dimensional limits for impertections could all be covered by specifying one quality level. In some cases, it may be necessary to specify different quality levels for different imperfections in the same welded joint. The choice of quality level for any application should take account of design considerations, subsequent processing (e.g. surfacing), mode of stressing (e.g. static, dynamic), service conditions (e.g. temperature, environmen) and consequences of failure. Economic factors are also important and should include not only the cost of welding but also of inspection, test and repair. Although this Intemational Standard includes types of imperfections relevant to the fusion welding processes given in clause 1, only those which are applicable to the process and application in question need to be considered. Imperfections are quoted in terms of their actual dimensions, and their detection and evaluation may require the use ‘of one or more methods of non-destructive testing. The detection and sizing of imperfections is dependent on the inspection methods and the extent of testing specified in the application standard or contract The nead of detection is not subject of this standard. This international Standard is directly applicable to visual examination of welds or test specimens. It does not include details of recommended methods of detection and sizing. Itis difficult to use directly for elaboration of criteria applicable to non-destructive testing using methods with showing indications (Ultrasonic, radiographic, eddy current, Penetrant, magnetic particle, ..). Therefore, it needs to be supplemented by requirements for examination, inspection und testing, The values for imperfections consider normal welding practice. Higher specications require additional manufacturing processes, e.g. grinding or welding under stringent laboratory conditions or special welding processes, it © ISO 1999 - All rights reserved ISO/DIS 5817 Welding — Fusion-welded joints in steel, nickel, titanium and their alloys (beam welding excluded) — Quality levels for imperfections 1 Scope This Intemational Standard provides quality levels of imperfections in fusion-welded joint (except for beam welding) in all types of steel, nickel, titanium and their alloys. it applies to material thickness above 0,5 mm. Quality levels for beam welded joints in steel are presented in ISO 13919-1 Three quality levels are given in order to permit application for a wide range of welded fabrication. They are designated by symbols B, C and D, where B is the most difficult to achieve. The quality levels refer to production quality and not to the fitness-for-purpose (see 3.2) of the product manufactured, This standard applies to: — unalloyed and alloyed steels; — nickel and nickel alloys; — titanium and titanium alloys; — manual, mechanized and automatic welding; — all welding positions; — all types of welds, o.g. butt welds, filet welds and branch connections; — the following welding processes and their defined sub-processes in accordance with ISO 4063: — 11 metal-arc welding without gas protection; — 12 submerged-are welding; — 13 gas-shielded metal-arc welding; — 14 gas-shielded welding with non-consumable electrode; — 16 plasma arc welding; — 31 oxy-fuel gas welding (for steel only). When significant deviations from the joint geometries and dimensions described in this Intemational Standard are present in the welded component, it is necessary to evaluate to what extent the provisions of this standard can apply. Metallurgical aspects, e.g. grain size, hardness, are not covered by this standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this Intemational Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibilty of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members of ISO and IEC maintain registers of currently valid Intemational Standards. 1S0 2589:1992, Welded, brazed and soldered joints — Symbolic representation on drawings ISO 4063:1998, Welding and allied processes — Nomenclature of processes and reference numbers 1SO 6520-1:1998, Welding and allied processes — Classification of geometric imperfections in metalic materials ISO 13919-1:1996, Welding — Electron- and laser-beam welded joints — Guidance on quality levels for imperfections — Part 1: Stee! 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this Intemational Standard, the following terms and definitions apply. 34 Quality level Description of the qualities of a weld on the basis of type and size of selected impertections. 32 Fitness-for-purpose ‘A product is fit for its intended purpose when it functions satisfactorily in service during its stipulated lifetime. The product may deteriorate in service, but not to such a degree that fracture and subsequent failure occurs. Product may, of course, be mis-used or overloaded: it is presumed that the actual conditions during service correspond to the intended conditions, including statistical variations, e.g. live loads. 3.3 Short imperfections One or more imperfections of total length not greater than 25 mm in any 100 mm length of the weld or a maximum of 25 % of the weld length for a weld shorter than 100 mm. The range with most imperfections shall apply. 34 Systematic imperfection Imperfection, which is repeated regularily in the welded joint. 3.5 Projected area ‘Area given by length of weld examined multiplied by the maximum width of weld. 3.6 Fracture surta: Cross sectional area to be considered after fracture. © ISO 1999 - All rights reserved ISO/DIS 5817 4 Symbols The following symbols are used in table 1: nominal throat thickness of the fillet weld (see also ISO 2553) width of weld reinforcement diameter of pore size (height or width) of imperfection length of imperfection in longitudinal direction of the weld length of projected or fracture surface area nominal butt weld thickness (see also ISO 2553) wall or plate thickness (nominal size) Wp Width of the weld or width or hight in case of fracture area 2° Jog length of a fillot weld (see also ISO 2553) @ angle of weld too Bangle of angular misalignment sop-sace 5 Assessment of imperfections Limits for imperfections are given in table 1. Systematic imperfections are only permitted in quality level D, provided other requirements of table 1 are fulflled. ‘A welded joint should normally be assessed seperately for each individual type of impertecti Different types of imperfection occuring at any cross-section of the joint which weaken the cross section may need special consideration (see multiple imperfections). ‘The limits for multiple imperfections (see table) are only applicable for cases, where the requirements for a single impertection are not exceeded. ‘Any two adjacent imperfections separated by a distance smaller than the major dimension of the smaller impertection shall be considered as a single imperfection. © ISO 1999 - All rights reserved ISO/DIS 5817 (penunuos) 'wur g'9 -xew ing 7 soo sy lun g'9 "xeu ng ‘suonoopodust yous, wu pxewingizosul e< vvosu z05u) —_[voreueduy peunsts se popetesiou sisi) mavepun venue] 2108 cones on | _‘suonopedut rg | __suonevedur sous € aso see airemnip ters merino eel | wuz wow ings 205 4 ponmuied wn pened on] “cusnonvaurvous| _s'02 vopeneued or0e7] zor] oh {oor econ) seu on pennused on pemuedron| so oenioxeet| —_tor| 9 pouedion| uw brewing vosul ume xeumarzosu| = 4 Zz > ponjuued on Jed ON iosuleaso t add meio] 202 | vs uu g wrung eZo= p]uue sauna ¥ C05 amen pomuied oy lug aeuina eeose|uue sui sexo] e< oan —| 100d obue wp vom unin Teor pened 199 perms] score sso] _ejesed asus eso vosueupunuen| sled eonne| Lice st Famed on reumea] #02 yeee wo] vos] @ penned etn pemuedion| 0g 3am eceuns| oot ve suonsepeduy eeyins | 7 3 3 vogwtseg — | voego 31242 Aipenb 10) suopoepedu 40) sy] wus Ul} syewey uogospaduuy os! ‘ON ‘suopoepoduy soy syu] — F e1qeL ISO/DIS 5817 @ ISO 1999 - All rights reserved (panuaucs) wus p xew Ing avo+um psu qgo+ uw isu luna g eu! yng. qou+ um sy avos wus su aco+umisy ago+uuisuleas%| os] te prem prow @ prom reuWoN L > z uw xew nq wu » eu yng uuu ¢ ew nq qvoruwrsy| ‘asvoruwssul ‘ascoruuisul coz] -Summoewio 6upuid Aue e1oog pounseon, c0s| ort uuu g -xeu nq wu 2 eu nq uuu 0} "eeu nq iy (e12m wre) ‘qvoruu psu] “asvorumssul —‘aszorumisu| soz] suuuoewso Supuus Ave siojoq pamsvoni| eeu pion ssooxa| 209] 6°L ww '9 eur na 1.90'0 54} wu yew ing +105 uy} wus z-xew ina 4 z'0 54 suomeped uous] suoncenedul yous] ‘suonospedus uous] _e< peuuied oN pomuedion| ror umzo sul eas paynbes | uonisuen neous] encoi6 e6eyaius| _cios| eb eoveieye1 @ 9 a woneusicog | -0es9 | stone Aen 4} suowoeyedu Jo} sqrt wu syreuoiy uonseyedun | “osi_| ON (penuguoc) 4 © ISO 1999 - All rights reserved ISO/DIS 5817 (penunuos) (1460601 renbeun on4ss60x6) “poquosesd lem vo 1 esvorumsisul — egrorumzsy ezioruuzsul s'0z[useq seu piom iy ousuusse e1oyn saseo uj| Arowusse onsseoxg] zks| 9b pened ION peyuuied on penuuedion| s'02 wonoxm wna] ors[ sh wai $0 xe Ina ua @ eu ng \so'0 5 u 1sz'o5 sro0s8| ‘suonoeyeduit uous ssuoyeepedwi uous] e< ayy Apreldwooul] 1s sz’o54 peujuuied on ssuooeedust uous | 01 $0] susses| 603] rr poniuied| pnnuiied 10N Panuuod yon] ove suoyoepeduii yous] s'02 deyer| aos] ert 022? -s0lz® osz»} soz 2m 361) — 2054 2 | coztz ® sz | soz pom ung —| sos| 24 8 2 a oneusiseq janet Arenb 40) suonoejedi 10 ww wn Syren, uoroenedui ost [on (penunuoo) | e142. It may be used — where applicable — for other fusion welding processes or wold thickness. Different components are very often produced for different applications, but to similar requirements. The same requirements should, however, apply to identical components produced in different workshops to ensure that work is carried out using the same criteria. The consistent application of this standard is one of the fundamental comerstones of a quality assurance system for use in the production of welded structures. ‘The summary of multiple imperfections shows a theoretical possibilty of superimposed individual imperfections. In such a case, the total summation of all permitted deviations shall be restricted by the stipulated values for the different imperfections, that means, the limit value of a single imperfection < h, e.g. for a single pore shall not be exceeded This Intemational Standard may be used in conjunction with a catalogue of realistic illustrations showing the size of the permissible imperfections for the various quality levels by means of photographs showing the face and root side and/or reproductions of radiographs and of photomacrographs showing the cross-section of the weld. This catalogue may be used with reference cards to assess the various imperfections and may be employed when opinions differ as to the permissible size of imperfections. 7
