"Project Humpty Dumpty Egg Drop"

Engaging Scenario men Couldn’t put Humpty together again.
You are part of a team that designs a protective covering/packing for fragile objects. You are
tasked to create a catch basket using discarded and recyclable materials that will prevent an egg
from breaking when dropped from a three-storey high building. Marketing department heads from
different companies will evaluate the project design and egg condition during the Drop Test.

Goal
Design and build a container that will protect delicate cargo (an egg) under stressful landing and
accident conditions.

Key Question
Based on the fragility of an egg, what materials and design concepts need to be considered to
protect an egg during a drop from over 3 m?

Preparation
Collect Possible Materials
Construct a container to protect the egg from a fall of over 3 m

Required Materials

Egg (1 per group for the day of the drop)

Measuring tape
Stopwatch
Container to protect egg

Construction

The device must be of original design.

It can be constructed of any material that the team feels appropriate and can obtain, including
material recycled from other products.
Upon the initial release of the device, it must be able to fit within a 12" cube. Once the device is
released, it may take any shape or size.
There will be no physical contact with the device once it has been released.
The egg must be put into the design on the day of the competition. The design must allow for easy
opening and inspection of the egg. Opening and closing of the packages will be accomplished in
the same period of time for all contestants (2 minutes). Repairs requiring additional materials will
not be allowed once the competition has begun.

Tittle: Hot air balloon

Concept: A make shift parachute is made out of a thin plastic bag, attached with strings into
a paper cup, where the egg is placed

Model design: (FIGURE

DRAWING) Materials used(in our

model):

Plastic bag, thread, and plastic straws.

Objectives: To build a container that can protect an egg from being dropped at a height; from this
the egg should not have any cracks or should not break when it hits the ground.

Procedures: Cut a portion of a plastic bag, it should be a perfect square, fold it 2 times diagonally
so that every corner meets, then fold it again ,but this time make sides meet, do this two times then
cut the right side of your material, fold it once and with the crease created poke the end to make
tiny holes for the strings, attach the strings on the holes and then attach it to the cup, by adding two
plastic straws that intersect at the top of the cup, attach all the strings to the plastic straws, and
lastly put the egg inside the cup before securing it.

Questions to Think About

Should your container be made rigid; or is it better if it collapses?
-If the container is made rigid, the egg won’t have any room to move when it falls to the ground,
which will cause the egg to break. For this reason, it should be made out of materials that can
collapse so that it can absorb the force from being dropped at a height, reducing how much the egg
will be affected by that force.

Should the egg be able to move, or should it be held immobile?

-Yes, the egg should be able to move, because by that, the container will be able to absorb the
impact, instead of the egg itself.

What types of materials or structures will absorb the shock of an impact?

-Materials should be able to bend or collapse.

How can it be designed to withstand multiple drops from successively greater heights?
-Yes, as long as the materials stay in tact.

What types of materials will contain the egg if it breaks?

-Materials that are rigid, solid,or not able to collapse and move with the egg,or have space for the
egg to move.
Conclusion(Written section explaining how Newton’s Three Laws of Motion relate to the egg
drop project):

First is how the law of inertia relates to the experiment, it is connected to this project because if the
egg is not dropped then the egg won’t move, second is newton’s law; force equals to mass times
acceleration. The heavier your material, the stronger force, and the faster it accelerates. Last and
the third law of Newton is the law of interaction; when the egg is dropped and the container
collapses or changes form to absorb the impact, the egg as well follows, they interact.
