GENERATOR PROTECTION CHECK BY DYNAMIC TESTING

1. PURPOSE
As guidance to perform generator protection check.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENT
2.1. Generator protection, Stability checking by using Dynamic Testing
2.2. Operation and Maintenance of Large Turbo-Generators

3. PROCEDURE
1.1. PRE CHECKS
a. Generator circuit breaker on/off and protection trials are completed with sequence of events print
outs of plant control room.
b. Local breaker back up isolation links are removed.
c. Busbar Diff. current transformer core is shorted by generation control room testing staff
d. Gen. trip to turbine trip command bypassed by I & C staff.
e. All other protections of gen., generator transformers, and unit auxiliary transformers are in service.
f. Confirm 3 phase shorting is done after circuit breaker isolator.
g. Voltage transformer supervision to disable, for the operation of backup impedance protection

1.2. OCC (OPEN CIRCUIT CHARACTERISTIC) TEST

Kept open the isolator and then sensitivity of generator stator earth fault and generator stand by earth
fault are checked by making single phase to earth by earthing rod at potential transformer cubicle and
then at generator neutral.

4.2.1. Sensitivity of Generator Stator E/F (95%) relay

a. Open the 29D circuit breaker isolators.
b. With turbine rolling on 3000 rpm and field breaker is off, now make single phase to earth by
earthing rod at field breaker cubicle.
c. Close the field breaker and gradually increase the voltage, note down the voltage VN
measured, where 95% stator E/F protection relay operates (VN setting is 8V).
d. Ensure operation of master trip relay with auto tripping of field breaker, reset master trip relay
and relay.
4.2.2. Sensitivity of Generator Standby Stator E/F (51NG) Relay
a. Disable 95% stator E/F protection.
b. Close the field breaker and gradually increase the voltage till current through current
transformer of 51NG relay reaches 150mA (t=1sec), (IN measured) Confirm the operation of
standby stator E/F 51NG relay with master trip relay. Note down the voltage.
c. Ensure the tripping of field breaker, reset master trip relay and relay.

WORK PROCEDURE

GENERATOR PROTECTION CHECK BY DYNAMIC TESTING

d. Remove the earthing done in potential transformer cubicle and lock the potential transformer
cubicle.

4.2.3. Sensitivity of Generator Stator E/F (100%) Relay

a. Earth the gen. neutral at neutral cubicle by earthing rod.
b. Disable 51NG, and change V<80 inhabit to V<30 for checking 100% E/F protection.
c. Close the field breaker and gradually increase the voltage, Simulate generator circuit breaker
on condition for generator relay panel-1&2.
d. Note down the voltage VN Measured and VN 3rd, where 100% Stator E/F. Protection relay
operates (VN 3rd setting is 400mV).
e. Ensure the operation of master trip relay, tripping of field breaker, reset master trip relay and
Relay.
f. Normalize the 95% Stator E/F Prot. and remove the generator circuit breaker ON simulation.
g. Remove the earthing done in neutral grounding transformer cubicle.
h. Ensure the operation of master trip relay, tripping of field breaker, reset master trip relay and
relay.
i. Normalize the 95% stator E/F Prot. and remove the generator circuit breaker ON simulation.

4.2.4. Open Circuit Test

a. Confirm 29 D CB isolators are Open.
b. Normalize all disabled protections and other settings.
c. Close the field breaker.
d. Gradually increase the generator voltage in step of 4 KV up to rated 21 KV.
e. Note down the all the three potential transformer voltages at generator relay panel, automatic
voltage regulator panel.
f. Note down the synchronizing potential transformer voltage & voltage across 95% Stator E/F
Relay.
g. Trip the field breaker after reducing Gen. Voltage manually to minimum.

1.3. SCC (SHORT CIRCUIT CHARACTERISTIC) TEST

SCC test will check the stability of generator transformer differential, generator transformer differential
ref, Overall Differential, The sensitivity and selectivity of negative phase sequence protection relay is
also checked.

4.3.1. Stability of Gen. Diff., Generator Transformer Diff., Generator Transformer REF & Overall Diff.
Protection during SCC Test
a. Roll the machine at 3000 RPM.

WORK PROCEDURE

GENERATOR PROTECTION CHECK BY DYNAMIC TESTING

b. Close the 29D isolators at switchyard.

c. Put automatic voltage regulator on manual mode & close the field breaker.
d. Increase the current to 2000 A and note down all current transformers secondary currents at
generator relay panel, automatic voltage regulator panel and measure the spill currents
through Gen. Diff., generator transformer Diff., generator transformer REF and Overall Diff.
Protection relay in format and confirm the stability of all above relays.
e. Further increase the generator current and note the current where Minimum impedance relay
operates with master trip relay with Auto tripping of field breaker.
f. Reset master trip relay, disable the backup impedance protection.
g. Again close the Field Breaker and Increase the generator current up to 10000 A and again
measure all the spill currents through above-mentioned protection relays.
h. By looping ON GRID contact with Backup Impedance relay 21G2 in operated condition,
ensure operation of master trip relay with Auto tripping of Field Breaker.

4.3.2. Sensitivity of Negative Phase Sequence Protection Relay.

a. For checking this protection, Interchange R and Y phase current transformer by shorting links
and open the TB link.
b. Close the field breaker.
c. Gradually increase the current till negative phase sequence Alarm appears. Note down the
operating current. Note down I2 magnitude current where negative phase sequence Alarm
appears and note down Primary Current.
d. Further increase the current up to twice the current of negative phase sequence Trip setting.
e. Wait till the negative phase sequence Trip relay operates, I2-100%, ensure operation of
master trip relay with Auto tripping of Field Breaker (Trip setting is 300mA).
f. Reset all the relays.
