USE
MEDICAL COMFORT is a system-powered air conditioning
terminal unit designed specially for installation in soffits in
rooms in hospitals, clinics and assisted living facilities.

in a soffit
RANGE
Medical Comfort LI is available in three sizes: 235/11N, 235/22N and 235/33N.
Maintenance and servicing are simplified by the easy-access fan motor assembly, filter and coil. Thanks to the special key — made to
the requirements of EU Directive 98/37/EC and the ISO 13857 standard — less than 1 minute is needed to open the return air grille and
remove the filter.
The drain pain is removed through the bottom of the unit without having to remove the coil.
CIAT participates in the Eurovent certification programme for fan coil units. The performance levels under Eurovent conditions are listed on the
last page of the range. The list of certified products and specifications is given in Euroventís directory, which is also available at www.eurovent-
certification.com

MEDICAL COMFORT
A FEW REMINDERS ABOUT FINE PARTICLES AND COMFORT
The health risks of particulates
Generally speaking, suspended particulate matter (abbreviated as PM) is made up of fine airborne solid particulates.

A high amount of fine airborne particulates can increase the risk of:
- cardiovascular diseases, PM2.5
Human hair Combustion particles, organic
- reduced lung function, compounds, swarf, etc.
50-70 µm
- lung cancer,
- sleep apnea,
- etc.
The ultimate result is reduced life expectancy. PM10
Dust, pollen, mildew, etc.

In metrology, particulates are classified into three sizes (in

micrometres):
- PM10 (dia. < 10 µm),
- PM2.5 (dia. < 2.5 µm)
- PM1 (dia. < 1 µm). 1 µm
= Very fine grain of sand
10-6 m 90 µm
PM smaller than 2.5 micrometres (PM2.5) is highly hazardous and
monitored closely by public health authorities.
According to a recent study (New England Journal of Medicine, volume 360, No. 4, p.376-386, 22 January 2009), changes in life
expectancy rates between the late 1970s and the early 2000s, measured in 51 US metropolitan areas, confirmed a correlation
between mortality and changes in the amount of fine-particulate air pollution. The study found that a decrease of 10 µg per
cubic metre of PM2.5 airborne fine particulates during this time period was associated with an increase in life
expectancy of 5 to 9 months (even after adjustment for changes in socioeconomic and demographic variables and exposure
to cigarette smoke during the same period).

Characterisation of comfort levels

The ISO 7730 standard presents methods for predicting the overall thermal sensation and the overall degree of discomfort
(thermal dissatisfaction) of people exposed to moderate thermal environments.
It makes it possible to analytically determine and interpret thermal comfort by calculating the PMV (predicted mean vote) and
PPD (predicted percentage of dissatisfied) indices and by using local thermal comfort criteria.

Whole-body Local discomfort Category

thermal comfort
DR (%) PD (%) caused by

PPD PMV

VERTICAL AIR FLOOR RADIANT

DRAUGHTS
TEMPERATURE SURFACE TEMPERATURE
DIFFERENCES TEMPERATURE ASYMMETRY

<6 -0.2 <PMV< +0.2 < 10 <3 < 10 <5 A

< 10 -0.5 <PMV< +0.5 < 20 <5 < 10 <5 B
< 15 -0.7 <PMV< +0.7 < 30 < 10 < 15 < 10 C

Three categories of comfort have been defined based on these criteria. By achieving the class A conditions
required by the ISO 7730 standard, CIAT’s system packages, such as Coadis 2, Comfort and Combi, are able to
meet the highest requirements.

PROTECTION OF ROOM OCCUPANTS

Protection of health/IAQ

Epure purification function:

→ The protected stream of air (no non-ducted return within
ceiling voids) prevents any bacteria (e.g. Aspergillus) present inside
suspended ceilings from entering rooms.

→ Air is diffused and mixed at sufficient rates to ensure uniform change rates.

→ The high-tech air filter protects the health of all occupants:

Made of non-breaking synthetic fibres that do not release any particles (zero glass
fibres).

Our Epure purification function is designed to prevent adverse effects on patient health:
Indirectly, yet immediately, by trapping particulates that could encourage the proliferation of bacteria harmful to
patients.
Indirectly, by eliminating fine particulates (PM2.5) that can result in long-term health effects (respiratory and
pulmonary systems, etc.).

◆ PM2.5 by mass

This function continuously protects people 30 PARIS : 30 µg/m3

→ Choice of materials:

The comfort unit is made of non-erodable materials to help to reduce the risk of exposure to particulate matter.

Condensation-free operation:
The water temperature is kept within a specific range and the V3000 controller adjusts the operation based on
information sent by the safety sensor to eliminate the risk of bacteria forming in the drain pan.

Fresh air management (optional):

Manages hygienic fresh air to ensure higher air quality depending on occupancy during the day or night.

Maintained comfort levels

Thermal comfort is ensured in rooms all year round, even if the fresh air handling unit is off (power failure, maintenance, etc.).

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Operates at the highest water temperatures (e.g. 13/17°C, Air: 26°C/45% RH)

The elimination of condensation increases the energy efficiency.

Between 15 and 30% depending on the area.

The air handling unit (AIRCLEAN) will be sized to dehumidify only the strict minimum necessary.
It is imperative that the unit compensates for latent heat gains from occupants.

The increased efficiency levels lower the energy consumption of CIAT’s units.

Compared to a conventional range (7/12°C): 15 to 18% more efficient.

The running times of our refrigeration units can be reduced even more (between 30 and 70 days, depending on
the area) by using free cooling and combining them with our dry coolers,

Energy efficiency of the fan motor assembly.

At low speed, our motors consume between 1 and 1.5 W/m2 of treated space in single-bed (<17 m2) and two-bed (<30 m2) rooms.
These levels remain below the 2 W reference limit imposed by the French thermal regulation RT 2005.

Our optional HEE motors require four times less energy, thereby going even further than the
current regulation and anticipating future thermal regulations.

The new HEE impellers make our units 10 to 15% more energy efficient.

The use of 3-point (floating) actuators instead of time-proportional electro-thermal actuators not only enables
finer control, but saves energy as well.

ECODESIGN
In accordance with French environmental regulations, our units are fitted with reusable filter
frames. Only the filter media need to be replaced.
The pleated filter has a service life of over 2 years. It is best to change the filter before the start of
the air-conditioning season.

The condensation safety devices operate locally to reduce or even completely stop the flow of water in the coil.

INFORMATION SENT TO THE BMS

- Triggering of safety devices in each room;
- Indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity conditions;
- Chilled water production temperature.
ADJUSTMENTS MADE BY THE BMS
- Chilled water production temperature;
- Dehumidification of fresh air.
As an anticipatory measure to limit the triggering of the safety devices in the terminal units (and thus maintain
the system operating).
