Why do we need a constitution?

A constitution is the highest expression of the law. It is a collection of laws that needs to be followed by
everyone no matter your position in the government is. It is the basis of the state. When creating laws, it
should not condemn or violate the constitution. Lawmaking institutions must consider the constitution
before creating any rules and regulations. This comprises 18 articles that discusses the national territory,
declaration of principles and state policies, bill of rights, citizenship, suffrage or the right to vote, 3
branches of the government, constitutional commissions, local government, responsibility of public
officers, national economy and heritage, social justice and human rights, education, family, general
provisions, amendments and revisions of the constitution, and transitory provisions.

We need the constitution because it saves us from unlawful using of power in the government. It
maintains the humanity among people and society. It establishes the independence of the people by
having a democratic type of government. It also prevents our country to laws like martial law which
obviously take out the rights of every citizen. It gives us the right to control our lives freely. We have the
power to vote for the leaders are freely given to the citizens.

The type of government we have today is Democratic. What is democratic? It is the type of government
wherein the citizens are given the chance to choose or vote for the leaders they think are capable in
protecting and leading the country. That is why it is critical to choose the right leaders. It is also the type
of government that has three branches. The legislative, executive and judiciary. The legislative is
responsible in creating laws. The executive is the one who execute the law. While, the judiciary are the
ones who interpret the law.

If I will be given the chance to change the type of government we have today, I will choose not to
change it but instead keep it. Having a democratic government has a lot of benefits we can enjoy. We
have the freedom to vote, speak, and act without violating law. We can assure that we are safe and
secured. We have different opinions and perspective but in this type of government, it is valid and
respected. The main reason why I want to keep it is because it is the only government that respect the
differences in political preferences of the citizens.

No matter what type of government we have, it is important to follow the rules and regulations to have
a peaceful society. We are lucky enough having this type of government. Since we have the power to
choose the representatives or the leaders of the country, our duty is to choose wisely and protect our
votes.
