Homework Policy
1. Homework will be assigned as the material is covered.
2. Late submissions will receive a 10% credit deduction per
day.
3. No homework will be accepted after the marked
homeworks are returned back and solutions are provided.
4. Students are encouraged to discuss and formulate solutions
to the problems by working in teams. However, homeworks
MUST be completed and submitted individually.
5. WARNING: Copying answers from another student or from
a solution manual will result in ZERO credit for BOTH
students for the first time. Subsequently, disciplinary action
will be taken according to the University rules.

Homework Guidelines
Guidelines for homework presentation and submission are given below:

1. Use good quality paper with ruled lines or engineering graph paper. Use A4
size paper.
2. Write on only one side of the paper.
3. Either pen or pencil is acceptable. However, only use black or blue colors.
Absolutely no use of RED color.
4. Include a title page with your name, student ID, homework number and
submission date.
5. Staple all pages together in the upper left corner.
6. Use straight edge for drawing all figures and tables. Freehand-drawn tables
and figures will receive negative marking.
7. Neatly box all answers and include appropriate units for numerical answers.
8. Show all work. Credit will only be given for work shown.
9. Include input and output files when solving homework with a software.

If the above guidelines are not followed, the homework will either be rejected
with zero credit or credits will be deducted accordingly.

Introduction to Solid Mechanics
 Solid mechanics is the branch of mechanics, physics, and
mathematics that concerns the behavior of solid matter
under external actions (e.g., external forces, temperature
changes, applied displacements, etc.).

 Also called: Strength of Materials, Mechanics of Materials

 Deals with calculating stresses in structural members, such

as beams, columns and shafts.

 Employs methods to predict the response of a structure

under loading and its susceptibility to various failure
modes [ This is the basis of Engineering Design].

Historical Note
 Solid Mechanics began as a branch of Mathematics
 Archimedes (287-212 BC) – fundamental laws

Stephen Timoshenko (1878 – 1972)
• Ukrainian-American Engineer and Applied
Mathematician
• Also known as the Father of Modern Engineering
Mechanics
• Research in the earlier variant of the Finite
Element Method of elastic calculations, the so
called Rayleigh method.
• Wrote many seminal books on Engineering
Mechanics, Elasticity and Strength of Materials.
• The Timoshenko Medal honors Stephen P.
Timoshenko as the world-renowned authority in
the field of mechanical engineering by ASME.
