Island School Chemistry ANSWERS P&B 2a

Diffusion and Dissolving Safety.

Wear safety goggles;
Aim Understand how the results of experiments involving potassium permanganate
the dilution of coloured solutions and diffusion of gases can stains; conc HCl and conc
be explained. Know what is meant by the terms: solvent, NH3 should be used in
solute, solution. fume cupboard

Method
1. Carefully put a purple crystal of potassium permanganate into a beaker of water using a hollow
glass tube. Do not move the beaker but check it every 15mins
Colour in the beakers to show how far the purple colour would have spread at each time.

immediately after 15mins after 30mins

2. Fill in the gaps in these sentences, using words from the box. You may need to use some words
more than once.

Initially the crystal (solute) DISSOLVES in the water (solvent). The colour in the beaker spread
out by DIFFUSION. The water PARTICLES are moving around all the time.
They bump into PARTICLES from the purple crystal, and MOVE them around. The purple
colour gradually SPREAD out through the WATER.

3. Increase the temperature of the solution (1)

Gained more kinetic energy so the particles move faster (1)
diffusion move particles dissolves spreads water

4 Label the following gas jars after the experiment after the cover slip is removed:

Air ....AIR AND BROMINE

Bromine .. AIR AND BROMINE

5 Diffusion happens faster in gases than in liquids. Why does this happen?

Gas particles have more energy so move faster
