Digestive System
Digestive System
It’s a system responsible for moving food and liquid through your GI tract, breaking
food and liquid into smaller parts, or both. Your GI tract is a series of hollow organs in
your digestive system. These hollow organs are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small
intestine, large intestine, and anus. Digestion is important because your body needs
nutrients from food and drink to work properly and stay healthy. Once foods are
broken into small enough parts, your body can absorb and move the nutrients to where
they are needed.
The Mouth - Before someone swallows their food, the mouth has to chew the food.
Chewing breaks the food into smaller pieces, making it easier to swallow and digest the
food.
Esophagus - With Saliva the food gets transported to the stomach through a
muscular tube called the oesophagus.
Stomach - Inthe stomach further release of enzymes break down the food
further and this is combined with the churning action of the stomach.
The large intestine absorbs water, and the waste products of digestion become stool.
During the process your hormones and nerves work together to help control the
digestive process.
