SERIES COMPLETION AND MISSING CHARACTER
NUMBER SERIES
A number series is a collection of numbers which follow a particular pattern or rule. The pattern followed
by the number in the series remains the same throughout. Each number in a number series is called a
term.

TYPES OF SERIES
1. Difference series : The difference series can be further, classified as follows:
(a) Number series with a constant difference ; Here the difference between two
consecutive numbers is always constant. For example, the numbers of the series
1, 4, 7, 10, 13 ..... are such that the difference between two consecutive terms is constant.
Here this difference is 3.
(b) Number series with increasing /decreasing difference : Here the difference between
consecutive terms is not constant. It either decreases or increases, e.g. the series
7, 12, 16, 19, 21 ....
7 12 16 19 21

+5 +4 +3 +2

2. Product series : Consider the series 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96.

3 6 12 24 48 96

×2 ×2 ×2 ×2 ×2

3. Squares/Cubes series :
Ex.1 Squares series : 1 4 9 16

2 2 2 2
1 2 3 4
Here the term that follows 16 will be square of 5, i.e. 25.
Ex.2 Cubes series : 33 43 53 63

27 64 125 216

4. Combination series : This is a type of series where more than one arithmetic operation is
performed. Let us take an example. 2, 1, 4, 4, 6, 9, 8, 16
Here two series are being followed alternatively first is even number series (2, 4, 6, 8) and the
second is square series (1, 4, 9, 16)

PAGE# 1
SERIES COMPLETION MENTAL ABILITY_NTSE / VII

5. Triangular Pattern Series : Sometimes, the differences between the consecutive terms of a
series, again form a series. The differences between the consecutive terms of the new series so
formed, again form a series. This pattern continues till we attain a uniform difference between the
consecutive terms of the series.

Illustration 1:
Find the missing numbers :
1, 1, 4, 8, 9, ? ,16, 64
(A) 21 (B) 27 (C) 25 (D) 28
Solution : (B)
(i) 1, 4, 9, 16 [12, 13, 22, 23, 32, 33.........]
(ii) 1, 8, __, 64
mixed combination

Illustration 2:
Find the missing numbers :
2, 8, 18, 32, ___
(A) 62 (B) 60 (C) 50 (D) 46
Solution : (C)
The pattern is + 6, + 10, + 14, + 18, ...............
 missing number = 32 + 18 = 50

Illustration 3:
Find the missing numbers
7,19, 55, 163, ___
(A) 387 (B) 329 (C) 527 (D) 487
Solution : (D)
Series : (7 × 3) – 2, (19 × 3) – 2, (55 × 3) – 2, (163 × 3) – 2  487.
No. is miltiplied by 3 and subtracted by 2.

Illustration 4:
Find the missing numbers:
2, 3, 6, 9, 10, 27, 14, ___
(A) 81 (B) 82 (C) 84 (D) 28
Solution : (A)
I : 2, 6, 10, 14 [4 is added to each no.]
II : 3, 9, 27, ..... [series 31, 32, 33, 34, ....]  81 (A).

FINDING THE WRONG TERMS IN THE GIVEN SERIES (NUMBER ODD MAN OUT)
Let us consider some examples to understand the concept of odd man.
1 4 9 16 25 36 63 81
(a) On observing the terms of the above number series carefully, we notice that all the terms except
63 are perfect squares of natural numbers. 63 is not a square of a natural number. Hence, 63 is
the odd man.
(b) 235 354 424 541 613
This problem is somewhat tricky. The sum of digits of each term except 354 si 10. The sum of
digits of 354 is 3 + 5 + 4 = 12. Hence 354 is the odd man.

Illustration 1 :
Find the wrong term of the series :
2, 12, 24, 34, 68, 78, 158, 166
(A) 68 (B) 78 (C) 158 (D) 166
Solution : (C)
The sequence in the given series is :
+ 10, × 2, + 10, × 2, + 10, × 2, + 10, × 2, ............
So, 158 is wrong and must be replaced by 156.

Illustration 2 :
Find the wrong term of the series :
7, 9, 16, 25, 41, 68, 107, 173
(A) 16 (B) 41 (C) 68 (D) 107
Solution : (C)
No. is the sum of its previous two numbers.
7 + 9 = 16, 9 +16 = 25, 16 + 25 = 41,
25 + 41 = 66, 41 + 66 = 107, 66 +107 = 173.
Hence, the wrong number is = 68.

ALPHABET SERIES
In this type of questions, a series of single, pairs or groups of letters or combinations of letters and numerals
is given. The terms of the series form a certain pattern as regards the position of the letters in the English
alphabet. Identity this pattern and accordingly find the missing term or the wrong term in the given series.

Illustration 1 :
Find the missing term :
Q, N, K, ?, E
(A) H (B) I (C) J (D) G
Solution : (A)
In the given series, every letter is moved three steps backward to obtain the corresponding
letters of the next term. So, the missing term is H.

Illustration 2 :
Find the missing term :
DFK, FEL, HDM, JCN, ?
(A) KBN (B) KBO (C) LBO (D) LBN
Solution : (C)
The first letter of each term is moved two steps forward, the second letter is moved one step
backward and the third letter is moved one steps forward to obtain the corresponding letters of
the next term.

ALPHA NUMERIC SERIES

This type of question is just a jumbled form of questions of Type 1 and Type 2, which you have just read.
Here, the terms of the given series are a combination of letters and numerals, which move according to
a set pattern. Study the following illustrations.

Illustration 1 :
Find the wrong term(s)
P 3 C, R 5 F, T 8 I, V 12 L, X 18 O, Z 23 R
(A) V 12 L (B) X 18 O (C) Z 23 R (D) R 5 F
Solution : (B)
Given series is :

17
P3C, R5F, T8I, V12L, X 18 O, Z23R
+2 +2 +2 +2 +2
+3 +3 +3 +3 +3
+2 +3 +4 +5 +6

CONTINUOUS PATTERN SERIES

This type of questions usually consists of a series of small letters which follow a certain pattern.
However, some letters are missing from the series. These missing letters are then given in a proper
sequence as one of the alternatives. Choose this alternative as the answer.

Illustration 1 :
Which sequence of letters when placed at the blanks one after the other will complete
the given letter series?
– b c c – ac – a a b b – a b – c c
(A) aabca (B) abaca (C) bacab (D) bcaca

Solution : (C)
The series is bbccaa / ccaabb / aabbcc.

MISSING CHARACTER
In such type of question, a figure, a set of figures, an arrangement or a matrix is given, each of which
bears certain characters, be it numbers, letters or a group/combination of letters/numbers, following a
certain pattern. The candidate is required to decipher this pattern and accordingly find the missing character
in the figure.

CLASSIFICATION
WORDS CLASSIFICATION
In this type of classification, different objects are classified on the basis of common features/
properties-names,places,uses,situations,origin, etc.

ALPHABET CLASSIFICATION
In this type, alphabets are classified in a group using a particular method or rule. Rules or methods
used for such classification are often simple and hence can easily be understood.

MISCELLANEOUS CLASSIFICATION
In this type of classification, any rule other than described above can be used for classification or
grouping. Questions on such pattern do not necessarily use the alphabets and words. Here the
numerics and other mathematical symbols can also be used.

CODING-DECODING
INTRODUCTION
(i) Coding : A method of transmitting a message between sender and receiver which cannot be
understood or comprehended by a third person unless we use a pattern of code that has been
followed.
(ii) Decoding : Decoding refers to the, process of arriving at an equivalent word from the code
word given.

TYPES OF CODING - DECODING

Type -1 : Letter Coding
In these questions, the letters in a word are replaced by certain other letters according to a specific rule
to form its code.

Illustration 1 :
If in any code language, kumar is coded on LVNBS, How is EMOTIONAL coded in
that language
(A) FNQUJQBM (B) FNPUJPOBM (C) GNPUJPOBM (D) GNQUJQOBM
Solution : (B)

Similarly,
E M O T I O N A L F N P U J P O B M

Type -2 : Direct Letter Coding

Sometimes, particular letters are made codes for particular letters without there being any set pattern.
For example, let us consider a language in which A is coded as W, C as P, E as T, L as Z, S as B and T
as K. Then, the code for CASTLE in that language is PWBKZT.
Such type of coding is called direct-coding.
Illustration 1 :
In a certain code, 1 is coded as S, 7 as E, 9 as H, 6 as L, 0 as T and 2 as O. How is
921076 coded in that code ?
(A) HOSTLE (B) HOSTEL (C) HOSLET (D) TOSHEL
Solution : (B)
9  H,2  O, 1  S, 0  T
Only (B) is valid.
PAGE# 19
CODING-DECODING MENTALABILITY_NTSE

Type -3 : Number/Symbol Coding

Here, either numerical code values are assigned to a word or alphabetical code letters are assigned to
the numbers.
Illustration 1 :
If KOLKATA is 7, 3, 6, 7, 8, 7, 8, BANGALORE will be
(A) 7, 8, 4, 2, 8, 6, 3, 9, 4 (B) 7, 8, 4, 2, 8, 3, 6, 9, 4
(C) 7, 4, 8, 2, 8, 6, 3, 9, 4 (D) 7, 8, 4, 2, 8, 6, 9, 3, 4
Solution : (A) The letter no. is counted in reverse order.
K O L ....... A
   
16 12 15 26
(1+6=7) (1+2=3) (1+5=6) (2+6=8)
Similarly,
B  25 (2 + 5 = 7) O  12 (1 + 2 = 3)
A  26 (2 + 6 = 8) R  9 (= 9)
N  13 (1 + 3 = 4) E  22 (2 + 2 = 4)
G  20 (2 + 5 = 7) O 12 (1 + 2 = 3)
L  15 (1 + 5 = 6)
 BANGLORE  78426394.

Type - 4 : Substitution
Here some particular words are assigned to certain substituted names. Then a question is asked that is to
be answered in the substituted code language.
Illustration 1 :
If CLOTH is called GOLD and GOLD is called PAPER and PAPER is called CAKE,
then JEWELLERY would be made up of ?
(A) Gold (B) Cloth (C) Cake (D) Paper
Solution : (D) JEWELLERY would be made up of GOLD and GOLD is called PAPER.

Type - 5 : Deciphering Message Word Codes

Here some messages are given in the coded language and the code for a particular word or message is
asked. To analyse such codes, any two messages bearing a common word are picked up. The common
code-word will thus represent that word. Proceeding similarly by picking up all possible combinations of
two, the entire message can be decoded and the codes for individual words found.

Illustration 1 :
If finger is called toe, toe is called foot, foot is called thumb, thumb is called ankle,
ankle is called palm and palm is called knee, which one finger has a different name?
(A) Thumb (B) Ankle (C) Knee (D) Palm
Answer: (B)

Type - 6 : Deciphering Number and Symbol codes for messages

Here a few groups of numbers/symbols, each coding a certain message, are given. Through a comparison
of the given coded messages, taking two at a time, the candidate is required to find the number/symbol
code for each word and then formulate the code for the given message.

Illustration 1 :
In a certain code, 786 means bring me apple, 958 means peel green apple and 645
means bring green fruit which of the following is the code for me ?
(A) 8 (B) 6 (C) 7 (D) None of these
Solution : (C) bring – 6 (From 1st and 3rd)
apple – 8 (From 1st and 2nd)
me – 7 (From 1st and above)

DIRECTION SENSE TEST
This class contains problems on directions which judge a student’s ability to interpret a question
correctly and follow its directions.
The figure below shows the four main directions (North N, South S. East E and West W) and its cardinal
directions (North-East NE, North-West NW, South-East SE and South-West SW).

Illustration 1:
A man is facing North-West. He turns 90º in the clockwise direction and then 135º in
the anticlockwise direction. Which direction is he facing now?
(A) East (B) West (C) North (D) South
Solution : (B)
As shown in the Fig.,the man faces in the direction OA.After
moving 90º clockwise, the man faces in the direction OB.On
moving to 135º anticlockwise, he faces in the direction
OC,which is West.
Illustration 2:
Kishen walks 10 km towards North. Form there, he walks 6 km towards South. Then,
he walks 3 km towards East. How far and in which direction is he with reference to his
starting point ?
(A) 5 km, North (B) 5 km, North-East (C) 7 km, East (D) 7 km, West
Solution : (B)
The movements of Kishen are as shown in Fig. (A to B, B to C and C to D). B
AC = (AB – BC) = (10 – 6) km = 4 km. clearly, D is to the 6km
North-East of A.
10km C D
 Kishen's distance from starting point
4km
A = AD = AC 2  CD 2  4 2  3 2  25 = 5 km.
So, Kishen is 5 km to the North-East of his starting point. A

Illustration 3 :
A rabbit runs 30' towards East and turns to right, runs 20' and turns to right, runs 19'
and again turns to left, runs 15' and then turns to left, runs 22' and finally turns to left
and runs 16'. Now, which direction is the rabbit facing ?
(A) East (B) West (C) North (D) South
Solution : (C) 30'
A B
The movements of the rabbit from A to G are as show in fig.
20' G
So, the rabbit's face in North direction at the end of runs D 19' C
15' 16'

BLOOD RELATION
BLOOD RELATION
Problems on blood relations involves analysis of information showing blood relationship among,
members of a family. In the questions, a chain of relationship is given in the form of information and
on the basis of these information, relation between any two members of the chain is asked.
While attmpting questions on the blood relations, on should be clear of all the relation patterns that
can exist between any two individuls.

Table : Knowledge of different relationship in a family.

Grand Father's Son Father Or Uncle

Grand Mother's Son Father Or Uncle
Grand Father's Only Son Father
Grand Mother's Only Son Father
Mother's or Father's Father Grand Father

Husband's or Wife Brother Brother-in-law
Son's Wife Daughter-in-law
Daughter's Husband Son-in-law
Brother's or Sister's Son Nephew
Brother's or Sister's Daughter Niece

Remark : A relation on the mother’S side is called ‘maternal’ while that on the father’s side is called
‘paternal’. Thus, mother’s brother is ‘maternal uncle’ while father’s brother is ‘paternal uncle’.

MATHEMATICAL OPERATIONS
INTRODUCTION
In mathematical operations, a symbol or an operator is given and the operation which could be performed
using that symbol or operator is also defined. This could be explained using following example.
AO B =A+ B
Here, symbol O is defined as +. The questions that could be asked are as follows:
(1) Find the value of 9 O 7.
9 O 7 = 9 + 7 = 16
(2) Compare the given expressions.
e.g., Which is the greater: 6 O 6 or 9 O 3?
6 O 6 = 12 and 9 O 3 = 12
6O6=9O3
Note: Then one has to perform the operation that is defined and not the conventional one.
i.e., if A × B = A + B
Then, value of 3 × 4 = 3 + 4 = 7 and not 3 × 4 = 12.

Illustration 1 :
Direction: In answering the questions below, use the following information :
X  Y means divide X by Y
X  Y means multiply X by Y
X # Y means subtract Y from X

(C) X (1  5) (1  10) (2  3) (D) can't be determined
Solution : (A)

TYPES OF MATHEMATICAL OPERATIONS

Type -1 : Problem -Solving By substitution
In this type, you are provided with substitutes for various mathematical symbols or numerals, followed
by a question involving calculation of an expression or choosing the correct/incorrect equation.
Note: While solving a mathematical expression, proceed according to the rule BODMAS
i.e., Brackets, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

Type - 2 : Interchange of Signs and Numbers

Illustration 1 :
Directions : Correct the following equations by interchanging two signs :
5 × 15 ÷ 7 – 20 + 4 = 77
(A) – and + (B) × and ÷ (C) + and ÷ (D) + and × (E) – and ÷
Solution : (C)
If we interchange sings + and ÷, then the equation result into 5 × 15 + 7 – 5 = 77.
Hence, option (C) is the right answer.

Type -3 : Deriving the Appropriate Conclusions

In this type of questions, certain relations between different sets of elements is given (in terms of ‘less
than’, ‘greater than’ or ‘equal to’) using either the real symbols or substituted symbols. The candidate is
required to analyse the given statements and then decide which of the relations given as alternatives
follows from those given in the statements.

Illustration 1 :
If A + B > C + D, B + E = 2C and C + D > B + E, it necessarily follows that :
(A) A + B > 2C (B) A + B > 2D (C) A + B > 2E (D) A > C
Solution : (A)
A+B>C+D
 A+B>B+E
 A + B > 2C ( B + E = 2C)

Illustration 2 :
If A + D > C + E, C + D = 2B and B + E > C + D, it necessarily follows that
(A) A + B > 2D (B) B + D > C + E (C) A + D > B + E (D) A + D > B + C
Solution : (D)
A+D>C+E
 A + D > (2B – D) + E ( C + D = 2B)
 A + D > (B + E) + (B – D)
 A + D > (C + D) + (B – D)
 A + D > B + C.

SET THEORY
SET :
Set is defined as group of elements.
Example –
(i) Set of natural numbers.
A = {1, 2, 3, 4, ..........}
(ii) Set of fruits
A = {Apple, Mango, Banana, ...........}

SUBSET :
If every element of A, is an element of B, then A is called a subset of B.
Note: If A is subset of B, then A  B.
Example –
(i) A = {1, 2, 3, 4} B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8}
so, A  B.
(ii) A = {Paint, Shirts} B = {Fabric material}
so, A  B
because each element of A is made by B’s element.

An object is called a subset of another object, if former is a part of latter and such relation is shown by
two concentric circles.
(i) Birds
Ex. (i) Crows, Birds
(ii) Chair, Furniture
(iii) Seconds (ii) Minutes
(iii) Seconds, Minutes

(i) Crows
Universal SET () :
A set that contains all sets in a given context is called the universal set. It is denoted by .
Example –
A = {set of working women}, B = {set of house wifes}
then  = {Female persons}

LOGICAL VENN DIAGRAMS TEST MENTAL ABILITY/ CLASS-VII
Intersection of Sets
An object is said to have an intersection with another object, when two or more objects share some
thing in common.
Ex. (i) Surgeon, Males (i) Surgeon (i) Males

(ii) Politicians, Indian

(ii) Politicians (ii) Indian
(iii) Educated, Unemployed
All the three relationship given above have something in common as some surgeons can be male and
some female, some politicians may be Indian and some may belong to other countries.

Disjoint sets
Two objects are said to be disjoint when neither one is subset of another nor they share anything in
common. In other words, totally unrelated object fall under this type of relationship.
Ex. (i) Tool, Shirt
(ii) Furniture, Car

(i) Shirt (i) Tool

(ii) Car (ii) Furniture

PAPER FOLDING & PAPER CUTTING
PAPER FOLDING
The problems based on paper folding involve the process of selecting a figure which would most closely
resemble the pattern that would be formed when a transparent sheet carrying designs on either side of a
dotted line, is folded along this line. This figure has to be selected from a set of four alternaives.

PAPER CUTTING
In this topic we shall study the problems relating to the analysis of pattern that is formed when a folded
piece of paper have been cut in a definite design. In this type of questions, a set of three or more figures
showing the manner is which a piece of paper has been folded is given. In each of the first two figures,
a dotted line together with a arrow on it has been given. The dotted line is the reference line along which
the paper has to be folded and the arrow indicates the direction of the fold. Thus, these two figures
indicate the sequence in which the paper is folded. In the third figure there are marks showing the
position and the nature of the cut made in the folded sheet. We have to select one of the figures from the
set of four alternative figures which would most closely resemble the pattern when the paper is unfolded.

3 2 2 3

We get following results :

(a) Smaller cubes with three surfaces painted will be present on the corners of the big cube.
(b) Smaller cubes with two surfaces painted will be present on the edges of the big cube.
(c) Smaller cubes with one surface painted will be present on the outer surfaces of the big cube.
(d) Smaller cubes with no surface painted will be present inside the big cube.

 If a cube is painted on all of its surfaces with a colour and then divided into smaller cubes of equal size,
then after separation, number of smaller cubes so obtained will be calculated as under :
(a) Number of smaller cubes with three surfaces painted = 8
(b) Number of smaller cubes with two surfaces painted = (n – 2) × 12
(c) Number of smaller cubes with one surface painted = (n – 2)2 × 6
(d) Number of smaller cubes with no surfaces painted = (n – 2)3
Where n = number of divisions on the surfaces of the bigger cube
length of edge of big cube
n=
length of edge of one smaller cube

Example : A cube of side 4 cm. is painted black on all of its surfaces and then divided into various
smaller cubes of side 1 cm each. The smaller cubes so obtained are separated.

Here, n =  4
side of small cube 1
1. Number of smaller cubes with three surfaces painted = 8
2. Number of smaller cubes with two surfaces painted = (n – 2) × 12 = (4 – 2) × 12 = 24
3. Number of smaller cubes with one surface painted = (n – 2)2 × 6 = (4 – 2)2 × 6 = 24
4. Number of smaller cubes with no surface painted = (n – 2)3 = (4 – 2)3 = (2)3 = 8

Every DICE has :
(i) FACES  6
(ii) Edges  12
(iii) Corners  8

Dice is a three dimensional figure with all of its sufrace numbered.

Important Point of Dice :

1. A dice has six surfaces (faces) and all of them are numbered from 1 to 6.
2. From the diagram (figure) of dice we can observed that the any single face (surface) of
a dice touches the four (4) other faces of dice. A face have four (4) edges and its every
edge is common to other faces, so we can conclude the result that the every face of dice
adjoint (touch) the four other faces of dice and a remaining one face of dice is opposite
to it.
3. Thus, a dice has three pairs of opposite faces.

Problems On DICE :
Type-1
Standard DICE : In a standard dice the sum of numbers on the opposite face is “7”.

Illustration: Which number is opposite 5 in a standard dice given below?

1 5

(A) 2 (B) 6 (C*) 3 (D) Can’t be determine

Solution : (A)
Clearly, from the standard dice the sum of numbers on the opposite face is “7”, so number
opposite to 5 is 2.

Type-2
Sometimes we are given figures showing the same dice (may be in the form of a cube or a cuboid) in
various positions. After observing these figures, we ahve to find the number opposite a given number on
the dice.

Illustration: On the basis of two figures of dice, you have to tell what number will be on the opposite face of
number 5?

Type 3 : Construction of boxes

Sometimes there are certain problems in which a figure involving a sheet of paper cut into a specific
design is given and we have identify the cube or cuboid that will be formed by folding such a sheet of
paper. Conversely, the candidate may also be asked to identify the type of figure that will be formed
when a particular cube (or cuboid) is unfolded. An unfolded box (cube or cuboid) may appear in any of
the forms shown in the figures given below. Also given along with each figure, is the details of the cube
formed when such a sheet is folded to form a box :
