India rice rates gain on higher demand; growing supplies cap upside
Rice prices in Asia have increased, with export rates for the parboiled variety in India
rising due to improved demand. The new season crop's increased supplies have
further boosted prices. India's 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $493-$503
per ton, despite paying a 20% export duty.
"Even after paying a 20% export duty, Indian rice remains cheaper than supplies
from other countries. Price sensitive buyers have no choice but to buy from India,"
said an exporter at Kakinada in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh

- Command economy:
Kim’s major change in North Korea’s economic policy was to encourage competition.
Previously, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) production unit was
responsible for only executing the production targets required by the country.
Through a constitutional amendment in 2019, North Korea abolished the “Taean
[alternative] Work System,” the doctrine of economic management of business in the
era of a command-based controlled economy, and instead adopted “the socialist
corporate responsible management system.” The new system gave companies
actual management rights, creating an environment in which substantial competition
could occur.
- Incentive:
Dick and Mac asked themselves how they could prepare hamburgers, fries and
shakes as efficiently as possible. How, they wondered, could they streamline
operations for maximum profit? How could they distinguish themselves from the
other drive-ins? How could they speed up service?
In their quest for answers, they drew inspiration from East Coasters named Levitt.
This enterprising family applied Ford’s Model T–like assembly-line logic to building
homes on New York’s Long Island, where housing was needed in abundance to fill
the rapidly expanding suburbs. The McDonald brothers’ goal was to mimic this
prefab mentality in the preparation and serving of food: “Levittown on a bun.”
