Questions 30–34
Building a boat
13-year-old Diego Perez talks about building a boat with plastic bottles
Diego Perez lives in a small village in southern Mexico. Last summer, after a big
storm, he went for a walk by the sea and saw plastic bottles everywhere. That night,
he dreamt of a way to make a boat with the plastic bottles. In the morning, he drew
a plan of the boat and took his drawing to show his teacher.
Diego needed some help to build his boat. So, his friends helped him collect three
hundred empty bottles at the seaside. Diego couldn’t believe it only took them a few
hours to find everything he needed to build the boat. After he washed and dried the
bottles, he used a very strong glue to join them together.
When Diego first went in his boat, he was worried how safe it would be. But it sailed
without any problems. While Diego was sailing, his mum took a photo and shared it
with her friends. A few days later, a journalist saw it on social media and contacted
Diego’s family to invite him to go on a popular talk show. That’s when the whole
country learnt about his boat – an experience Diego will never forget.
Diego decided to start a boatmaking club with students from his school. The boats
they make are for local people to borrow to go fishing. This is how they are able to
earn money for their families. Now Diego’s village has more jobs, the beach is much
cleaner, and tourism is growing in the area.
