FOREWORD
The Palay and Corn Quarterly Bulletin describes the palay and corn crop situation
from January to March 2022. It also includes information on monthly prices of
palay, rice, corn, and fertilizer. Data on prices are sourced from the Farm Prices
Survey (FPS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the
Fertilizers/Pesticides Weekly Prices from the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority
(FPA).
The estimates for production and area harvested are the results of the
April 2022 Palay Production Survey (PPS) and Corn Production Survey (CPS).

BACKGROUND
The Palay Production Survey (PPS) is the source of data for palay, while Corn
Production Survey (CPS) is the source of data for corn.
Survey results, such as production and harvest area for palay and corn generated
from PPS and CPS, are published in this Bulletin. PPS and CPS have four survey
rounds in a year: January, April, July, and October.
With the new sampling design for PPS and CPS starting the first quarter of 2021,
both surveys cover all regions and provinces of the country, except the National
Capital Region (NCR).
Sampling Methodology
The domain of the survey is the province. Davao City and Zamboanga City which
were previously treated as domains are now merged with Davao Del Sur and
Zamboanga Del Sur, respectively. The sampling designs of PPS and CPS use the
results of the 2012 Census of Agriculture (CAF) and 2017 Listing of Farm
Households (LFH) as sampling frames. The PPS and CPS employ a combined
survey-based and model-based design, with the following details:
viii
(iii) Samples for CPS are independent from PPS. 1
Data Collection
Data collection is conducted quarterly during the first 10 days of the month after
the reference quarter, except for the fourth quarter where data collection is made
earlier.
Crop production refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a
particular crop during the reference period. It includes those harvested but
damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvester’s share, reserved,
etc. It excludes those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of
demand, force majeure, or fortuitous events, etc.
Area harvested refers to the actual area from which harvests were realized. This
excludes crop areas which were totally damaged. It may be smaller than the area
planted.

HIGHLIGHTS
PALAY
Palay production from January to March 2022 was estimated at 4.54 million metric
tons. This indicates a -1.9 percent decrease compared with its previous year’s
same period output of 4.63 million metric tons.
Likewise, harvest area contracted to 1,140.25 thousand hectares from the previous
year’s record of 1,148.23 thousand hectares. Yield per hectare decreased to
3.98 metric tons, from 4.03 metric tons in the same quarter a year ago. (Figure 1,
and Tables 2, 3, and 4)
1
Of the total palay production this quarter, 76.5 percent of the output were from
irrigated areas. The remaining 23.5 percent comprised the production from rainfed
areas. (Figure 2 and Table 1)
2
Irrigated palay production was registered at 3.48 million metric tons during the
reference quarter. This was higher by 0.2 percent from the 3.47 million metric tons
level in the same period of 2021.
The major contributors to the country’s irrigated palay output were Central Luzon
with 22.1 percent share, Cagayan Valley with 16.1 percent, and
SOCCSKSARGEN with 9.5 percent. (Figure 3 and Table 5)
3
Rainfed palay output for this quarter was recorded at 1.07 million metric tons. This
was lower by -7.9 percent than the previous year’s same period level of 1.16 million
metric tons.
Western Visayas was the top producer of rainfed palay with 32.0 percent share,
followed by ARMM with 17.0 percent share and Eastern Visayas with 12.2 percent
share. (Figure 4 and Table 6)

5
CORN
Corn production from January to March 2022 was estimated at 2.44 million metric
tons, which is -0.2 percent lower than the 2.45 million metric tons output in the
same period a year ago.
6
For this quarter, yellow corn production contributed 80.4 percent to the total corn
output. The remaining 19.6 percent is comprised of the production for white corn.
(Figure 7 and Table 1)
7
Yellow corn production was registered at 1.96 million metric tons during the period.
This was -0.1 percent lower from the 1.97 million metric tons output in same period
of 2021.
The major yellow corn-producing region was Cagayan Valley with 29.3 percent
share, followed by Ilocos Region with 18.8 percent share and ARMM with
11.8 percent share. (Figure 8 and Table 10)
8
White corn production this quarter was posted at 478.16 thousand metric tons,
which is -0.4 percent lower than the 480.03 thousand metric tons output in the
same period of 2021.
Of the total white corn production in the country, ARMM shared the majority or
27.8 percent of the total white corn production. This was followed by Northern
Mindanao and SOCCSKSARGEN with 18.2 percent and 10.8 percent shares,
respectively. (Figure 9 and Table 11)
