PERFORMANCE NOTES
The English translation of this Latin piece is a simple American Sign Language
(ASL) translation as well. The ASL vocabulary needed is included, and the words
and when to sign them are above the choral parts, making it very easy for the
student to use and learn.
The sign for “alleluia” is really a two-part motion. Please refer to the vocabulary
on page 16. Beginning at measure 57, sign the first half of the word for two measures,
then finish the sign during the next two measures. Since this is a round between
Part I and Part II, Part II begins signing one measure later as they enter singing.
The vocals and signing are done in round or canon form. Very striking visually, but
understandable to the eye.
When both Part I and Part II partner their melodies beginning in measure 77,
Part I is the only part using ASL. Both parts will sign “alleluia” during the last
two measures. The first half of the sign is on beat one, followed by the second half
of the sign as singers hold their notes. On the release or cut-off, release hands up
finishing the sign for “alleluia” with palms facing the sky.

[Indicates two things coming together so they are
with one another] Beginning with both A hands in
front of the chest, palms facing each other, bring
the hands together.
SWEET
Wipe the fingertips of the right open hand, palm
facing in and fingers pointing up, downward off the
chin while bending the fingers.
REJOICE, JOY
The hands have an upward movement that indicates
bringing up happiness from within.
Bring the flat palm of each hand against the chest
with circular outward alternating movements.

[Demonstrates the rhythm of music] Swing the
little-finger side of the right open hand, palm facing
in, back and forth with a double movement across
the length of the bent left forearm held in front of
the chest.
ALLELUIA, HALLELUJAH

and fingertips pointing up, together in front of the
chest. Then raise both modified “A” hands near each
shoulder, moving them in small circles outward.
