When we think of sport, we tend to associate it with healthy living, but addictions are
also common in people involved in professional sport. Many factors are involved in the
development of addiction, and in the case of elite players, personality, previous
experiences, emotions, stress and fame play a role.
In the case of sportsmen and women, they may turn to drugs to improve or enhance
performance or to better withstand pressure.
Among the most commonly used drugs are stimulants, such as cocaine or
amphetamines, which increase energy and concentration.
In this case we are going to talk about a professional NBA basketball player called
Delonce Maurice West.
Professional life
Delonce Maurice West was an American professional basketball player born in 1983.
He attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, where he was a
standout basketball player for the Raiders. There he played alongside NBA player Eddie
Basden. He led his team to the Maryland 4A championship, where Delonte had 22
points and 8 rebounds, but the Raiders lost 70-58. He was named player of the year by
the Washington Post with an average of 20.2 points per game, 6.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists
and 3.1 steals.
He played in the college league at Saint Joseph's University, where he excelled as a
defender. In his junior year he averaged 18.9 points and 6.7 assists per game. His team
reached the Top 8 of the NCAA Division 1 Championship and finished the season with a
30-2 record.
He went on to play in the NBA for several teams, including the Boston Celtics, Seattle
Supersonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks.
He was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 24th pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. His first
year in the NBA was difficult, as he had many injuries, so he scored few points. He
spent three seasons in Boston and in 2007 he was traded to the Seattle Supersonics,
where he played one year.
In 2008 he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he signed a 3-year contract.
There he played shooting guard with another great player, Lebron James.
After two and a half years in Cleveland, in August 2010 he was traded to the Minnesota
Timberwolves. A month later, he was acquired again by the Celtics.
In 2011 he signed with the Dallas Mavericks where he played until 2012. He was
suspended for disciplinary problems. In 2013 he signed with the Texas Legends.
In 2013 he signed a one-year contract with Fujian Xunxing of China and in 2014 he
returned to the United States, where he joined the Los Angeles Clippers for summer
league play.
In September 2014 he returned to China and in January 2015 he signed a contract with
Guaros de Lara of the Venezuelan Basketball League, but left the team without playing
a single game.
In March 2015 he joined the Texas Legends, but suffered an injury and finished the
season.
Personal life
Born in Washington, USA. His parents are Delphina Addison and Dmitri West. He has a
sister named Danielle and a brother named Dmitri. He has been married twice and has
two children.
His childhood was happy, but his family had financial problems. During his adolescence
he abused drugs and was admitted to children's hospitals. He was diagnosed with
bipolar disorder in 2008.
In 2009 he was arrested for a traffic violation while riding a motorbike. Police
discovered he had a 9mm Beretta pistol, a Ruger .357 Magnum revolver and a
Remington 870 shotgun. He was arrested and pleaded guilty to traffic and weapons
charges.
When he quit basketball he sank into a deep depression, using alcohol and drugs. He
quickly spent the money he had earned in his basketball career. He had several lawsuits
and separated from his wife.
Many NBA basketball players have supported him and tried to help him seek treatment
and support for his health problems and addictions.
West bought houses for his parents and helped his family members with money, but he
also had financial problems. In 2011 he applied for a job at Home Depot and worked in
a furniture shop.
In 2016 he was photographed in Houston, barefoot and wearing a hospital gown. In
June of the same year he was photographed begging in Maryland.
In 2020 he was photographed panhandling in Dallas (Texas) and Mavericks owner Mark
Cuban picked West up at a gas station. He paid for drug rehabilitation treatment and a
hotel room for him to live in.
In 2021 he found work at the rehab centre where he was treated, but in 2022 new
videos surfaced showing West panhandling in Virginia.
In 2022 he was arrested by police in Virginia while trying to steal a car.
He was living on the streets, begging for money to eat and buy drugs.
He was broke and his drug problems had led him to lose everything.
In early 2023 he was arrested twice for public intoxication.
At 39 years old, he still has not recovered from his addictions.
Delonte West was involved with drugs throughout his life. The abuse of these
substances led to negative incidents and behaviours for him.
Bipolar disorder and drug abuse are often linked, producing a negative effect on a
person's health.
Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder characterised by mood swings. It includes
depression, moments of euphoria, irritability and compulsive behaviour. It is
characterised by sadness, lack of energy, loss of interest in daily activities, difficulty
sleeping, changes in appetite, and mood swings.
People with bipolar disorder turn to drugs to control the symptoms of the illness,
especially when they have depression or anxiety.
However, drug use can increase the symptoms of bipolar disorder and have negative
consequences for the person. It can lead to mood swings and change the response to
treatment.
Treatment usually combines medication, improved lifestyle habits and psychological
therapy. It is important that the person works with a team of health professionals that
is tailored to their needs. Each person may respond differently to treatment, so the
best strategy must be found for each person.
