Project Title/IDEA: Production of E-Fuel from CO2
Description(150-250 “Ethanol” – The E-Fuel has been gaining attention as a potential component of
words): India's fuel industry, especially in the context of reducing greenhouse gas
emissions, improving energy security, and promoting agricultural sustainability.
However, whether Ethanol is the future of India's fuel industry depends on
various factors and the country's evolving energy and environmental policies.

The process of making Ethanol from Carbon Dioxide (CO2) represents a

groundbreaking approach to combating climate change and producing
sustainable fuels. This innovative technology often referred to as Carbon Capture
and Utilization (CCU), begins with the capture of CO2 emissions from industrial
sources, such as power plants and factories. Once captured, the CO2 is purified to
remove impurities and moisture.

Next, Hydrogen (H2) is generated through methods like water electrolysis, which
splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, or Steam Methane Reforming (SMR),
which extracts Hydrogen (H2) from natural gas. The key to this process is the
chemical reaction between CO2 and H2, facilitated by a catalyst, to produce
Ethanol (C2H5OH) and water. This reaction is known as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

Then the Ethanol separated from the reaction mixture, and any remaining water
is removed through dehydration.

The final Ethanol product can be stored and distributed for various applications,
including as a bio fuel or for use in the chemical industry

Objective(3-4 bullet Here are the project objective points for a project focused on making Ethanol
points): from CO2:

 Ethanol Production Efficiency: Develop and optimize a cost-effective and

environmentally sustainable process for converting CO2 into Ethanol.
Measure and improve the efficiency of Ethanol production, considering
factors such as conversion rate, energy consumption, and raw material
utilization.

 Carbon Emission Reduction: Set a clear goal to reduce carbon emissions

by converting CO2 into Ethanol. Calculate and track the reduction in CO2
emissions achieved through the project, both in terms of the carbon
captured and the carbon offset due to the use of Ethanol as a greener fuel
alternative.

 Scalability and Commercial Viability: Assess the scalability of the CO2 to

Ethanol conversion process and its potential for commercialization.
Identify technical and economic challenges and develop a plan to
overcome them. Determine the market demand and evaluate the project's
feasibility from a business perspective.

 Environmental Impact Assessment: Conduct a comprehensive

environmental impact assessment to evaluate the overall sustainability of
the project. This should include an analysis of water usage, waste
generation, land use, and potential impacts on local ecosystems. Develop
strategies to minimize any negative environmental effects and ensure the
project aligns with sustainability and regulatory standards.

Opportunity(Application,  The resulting Ethanol is suitable for various applications, including as a

Societal Impact) sustainable E-fuel, thereby reducing the overall carbon footprint of the
fuel industry.

 By converting CO2, a major greenhouse gas, into Ethanol, a valuable and

energy-rich fuel, this process contributes to a circular carbon economy and
mitigates the environmental impact of CO2 emissions. It holds great
promise as a means of combating climate change and transitioning
towards a more sustainable and renewable energy future. The pursuit of
Carbon-to-Ethanol transformation is a significant stride towards a greener
and more sustainable future.

 Ethanol is the future of India's fuel industry depends on various factors

and the country's evolving energy and environmental policies. India has
already launched the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme to mix this
Bio-fuel with petrol to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel.
