RECAP

We have learned that when we share what others have said, we do it

in two ways:
1. Direct speech is saying exactly what the original speaker has said.
In written form, this is enclosed in quotation marks (“…”).
Ex. James said to Lena, “I will put my faith in God.”

2. Reported Speech is repeating or reporting what the original

speaker has said.
Ex. James told Lena that he would put his faith in God.

Did you notice the differences between the two? You may have noticed
that the idea of the two examples is the same. You may also have noticed
that the second example under-reported speech just repeated what James
had said.
LESSON

When we change direct speech to reported speech, we must often

change the tense and the pronouns. Remember, the person is simply
reporting or repeating what the original speaker has said.

Examples:
(Direct Speech)
He said, “I am afraid.” (The pronoun used in the quoted part is „I‟ in the first
person. The verb is in the present tense.)
(Reported Speech)
He said that he was afraid. (The pronoun becomes „he‟ in the third person to
refer to the original speaker. The verb is in the past tense.)

(Direct Speech)
She said, “I have been blessed by God.” (The quoted part uses the pronoun
„I‟. The verb is in the present perfect tense.)
(Reported Speech)
She said that she had been blessed by God. (The pronoun becomes „she‟ in
the third person to refer to the original speaker who is feminine. The verb is
in the past perfect tense.)

(Direct Speech)
The young people said, “We are praying.” (The pronoun in the quoted part is
„We‟ which refers to the young people who are speaking in the direct speech.
The verb is in the present progressive tense.)
(Reported Speech)
The young people said that they were praying. (The pronoun is now in the
third person „they‟ to refer to the young people. The verb is in the past
progressive tense.)
Take a look at the following pictures. Then read the explanations that follow.

When reporting declarative sentences, notice that „believe‟ in the direct

speech becomes „believed‟ in the reported speech and „will provide‟ in the
direct speech becomes „would provide‟ in the reported speech. Also, notice
how the pronoun changes from first person „I‟ in the direct speech to third
person „she‟ in the reported speech. The pronouns have to change since the
little girl in this scene is just repeating what her mother has said. The word
that is also used because the original words of the mother is a declaration.

When reporting imperative sentences, you have to know whether the

command is positive or negative (uses not or never). Notice that the first
picture is a positive command so just use the word „to‟ before the verb. On
the other hand, use „not to‟ if the command is negative just like in the
second picture.
When reporting questions answerable by „yes or no‟, use the word „if‟.
Notice that in the question, the helping verb (Do) comes before the subject
(you) which is followed by the main verb (believe). In reporting questions,
you have to change the order of the subject and the verb which is now in the
past tense. Notice that the second woman in the picture is repeating the
question of the first woman to her and so the pronouns changed from „you‟
to „I‟.

When reporting WH- questions, use the same question word then
reverse the position of the subject and the verb. Change the pronouns and
then the tense of the verbs.

When changing direct speech to reported speech, we often need to

change the time. For example, tomorrow becomes the next day. Next week
becomes the following week. Yesterday becomes the day before or the
previous day. Last week becomes the week before or the previous week.
Notice that the time expression has changed from last week in the direct
speech to the week before in the reported speech.

Guided Practice
Let‟s apply what we have learned from our discussion. Pretend that you are
talking to the following people and you need to share with another friend
what each one has said. Change the direct speech to reported speech. Here
is the first one:

She said, “My faith in God will help me overcome my problems.”

How will you report this statement?
This statement should be reported this way:
She said that her faith in God would help her overcome her problems.
We know that the original speaker is feminine so we used the pronoun „she‟
and „her‟ which are all in third person. We also changed the tense of the
verbs.

Let‟s have the next item.

She said, “Trust God.”
How will you report this statement?
This statement should be reported this way:
She told me to trust God.
The original speaker is feminine so we used the pronoun „she‟ which is in
the third person. The pronoun „me‟ refers to the person the speaker is
talking to and that person is repeating what has been said to another friend.
Her statement is a command so we used „to‟ in the reported speech.
Let‟s proceed to the next statement.
He asked, “What is your biggest fear?”
How will you report this question?
This question should be reported this way:
He asked me what my biggest fear was.
The original speaker is masculine so we used the pronoun he. The pronoun
„me‟ refers to the person the speaker is talking to and that person is
repeating what has been said to another friend. The original statement is a
WH- question so we used the same question word to talk about the question
then we made sure that the subject comes before the verb. The verb tense
has been changed as well.

Let‟s have the next statement.

She asked, “Will you pray for me?”
How will you report this question?
This question should be reported this way:
She asked me if I would pray for her.
We used „she‟ and „her‟ for the original speaker.
The pronoun „me‟ and „I‟ refer to the person the speaker is talking to and
that person is repeating what has been said to another friend. The question
is answerable by yes or no so we used the word if. The verb tense has been
changed as well.

Let‟s have the last statement.

She said, “I will see you tomorrow.”
How will you report this statement?
This statement should be reported this way:
She said that she would see me the next day.
We used „she‟ for the original speaker. The pronoun „me‟ refers to the person
the speaker is talking to and that person is repeating what has been said to
another friend. The verb tense has been changed as well as the time
expression.
ACTIVITIES

I. Read the following statements carefully. Complete the following

reported speeches by choosing the correct word from the choices
inside the parentheses.

1) Tina told Jane, “I am so confident today.”

Tina told Jane (that, if) she was confident that day.
2) Jane asked Tina, “Why do you feel that way?”
Jane asked Tina why she (felt, feels) that way.
3) Tina said, “I have God in my heart.”
Tina said that she (had, have) God in her heart.
4) Tina told me, “Have faith.”
Tina told me (not to, to) have faith.
5) Jane asked Tina, “What makes you strong?”
Jane asked Tina (what, which) made her strong.

II. Pretend that you are talking to the following people and you need
to share with another friend what each one has said. Change the
direct speech to reported speech.

1) She said, “God will not give me problems I can‟t bear.”

2) She said, “Be faithful always.”

3) He asked, “What bothered you?”

4) She asked, “Will you talk to me?”

5) She said, “I will return tomorrow.”

WRAP-UP

have learned, and 1 question you have about the lesson.
