Module A Unit 1 Lesson 1 - The Characteristics of Cells

Organism: any living thing

CELL: the basic structural and functional unit of all organisms

Cell membrane
A protective layer that covers and acts as a barrier between the inside and the cells environment
Cytoplasm: all material within the cell membrane- NOT including the nucleus

Nucleus: the membrane bound organelle that contains the DNA

Prokaryotic a single celled organism that does not have a nucleus or
membrane bound organelles its DNA is located in the cytoplasm
No Nucleus, DNA distributed in cytoplasm.
Eukaryotic an organism that contain their DNA in a nucleus eukaryotic cells contain membrane
bound organelles as well as ribosomes

Unicellular living organisms, have only one cell such as protozoa, bacteria

Multicellular living organisms have multiple of cell (billions) of cells such as human, animals etc
