ABSTRACT

The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) affected all aspects of our life especially

on our education. The sudden change of learning and teaching method caused by the

lockdowns and virus that were implemented by the Philippine Government. Some of the

institutions dealt with the situation by shutting down operations, while other institutions

continued to operate by using the Internet and many kinds of application that supports

online learning. The continuation of New Normal Learning caused many issues from

students to teachers. In relation, the researcher aims to find out the struggles of New

Normal Learning to the Grade 10 students; from Lack of Technology, Financial and

Mental Health Problems, and Procrastinating/Poor Time Management and if there is a

significant relationship between the struggle they are facing and the Demographic Profile

which include Age, Sex, and Year level. Related studies of the past researcher pertaining

to the study were also used by the researcher to emphasize the conducted study.

The researcher chose the selected Grade 10 Students of Deca Homes Loma de

Gato Marilao Bulacan as the respondents of the study, they were chosen using random-

sampling technique. Survey Questionnaire in the form of checklist was considered by the

researchers as the right instrument for gathering data for the study. Based on the data

gathered using Chi- square Formula, the researchers find out that the demographic profile

and the level of awareness of the chosen respondents has no significant relationship.

INTRODUCTION

Presented in this chapter are the introduction, background of the study, theoretical

framework, conceptual framework, research paradigm of the study, statement of the

problem, hypothesis, and significance of the study.

Background of the Study

DIGITAL EDUCATION PROGRAM: On June 17, 2020, Department of

Information and Communications created a project for New Method of learning through

technology due to COVID-19. By the word “digital”, the project requires gadgets like

Laptop, Smartphone, Tablet. The Department of Education and Department of

Information and Communications Technology released an official statement way back

April 16, 2021 where they stated that they officially joined forces to strengthen the

delivery of education to every student through broadcasting, connectivity, and digital.

The program was made to promote education even though there is a pandemic, because,

it is stated at the 1987 constitution that “promote and protect the right of all citizens to

have an quality education Education Program steps and make education accessible to all”

the Department of Information and Technology also stated that the Digital Education

Program aims to give quality virtual education to learners and teachers without exposing

and risking them to COVID-19 virus.

The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) which produced a global pandemic, had a

powerful impact on not only the world’s economy, but also on education. The first case

of COVID-19 was discovered in December 2019 and quickly spread over the world,

causing schools to close temporarily. Fortunately, they implemented a New Learning

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
Delivery Modality that includes: a.) Online Learning, often known as “E-Learning”, this

type of learning requires a student to have access to the internet and a device such as a

Smartphone, Laptop, or Tablet. b.) Modular Learning, a type of learning where the

student has to learn independently by using a printed module provided by their teacher.

c.) Blended Learning, by the word itself “digital”, this is a combination of modular and

online learning. Due to procrastinating, social media and gaming temptations, many

Filipino learners struggled to study at home during the COVID-19 pandemic (Embudo,

2021). According to Carrasco (2021), majority of students faced academic struggles and

many had trouble accessing proper resources, about two-thirds of the students struggled

with online learning and one-third of the students had frequent trouble with their

computers and 21 percent of the students said they had unpredictable and unstable

internet. Anxiety and confusion about online learning may be seen in many students

(Tank, 2020). Until now, many students are struggling with their studies and seeking help

because it is affecting their mental health.

On September 2021, number of students and parents gathered outside an

elementary school in Quezon City to protest against distance learning method which is

implemented by the Philippine Department of Education. Some of the students wore

school uniforms as well as the grandmother protesters, to show that they want the

government to come out with a clear plan for a safe return of face to face classes. The

protesters said they should improve the distance learning because the children doesn’t

gain any new knowledge. A parent also said that they have nothing to pay for load or buy

any gadget, it’s already hard for them to buy food. The petition also wants an “academic

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
ease which will make the students adapt to distance learning and consider the mental

health of the students (Bagaoisan, 2021).

This type of learning is also used by some countries to continue deliver quality

education to the students. According to an article, the Philippines and Venezuela are the

only remaining country around the world that is still doing online learning. (Bagaoisan,

2021). The New Normal Learning is only for the students who have gadgets, which

makes it unfair for the students who does not have any gadget. The students with no

gadget are left with no choice but to choose Modular Learning where they have to learn

by themselves. Fortunately, some schools and local government decided to distribute

android tablets for junior high school learners. The Digital Education Project may be a

big help to our Education but this project is hard to tell that it helps our students

especially during this time of pandemic.

The researcher chose this topic to know the struggles of the students about the

New Normal Learning. The researcher wants to know if this type of learning will be

effective as it is in other countries.

The researcher chose the school First Progressive Academy located at Graceville

1 Subdivision, Muzon as the area where the study should be conducted. After some

brainstorming and with the advice of Ms. Monina Josef, the researcher chose Loma de

Gato Marilao Bulacan, narrowing it down to Deca Homes, due to the reason that the

number of students who experience the struggles of the New Normal is located at Deca

Homes and the researcher will have a better respondents and results with its students.

Review of Related Literature

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
Rachmat et al., (2020) according to their findings, the learning environment and

learning time had an impact on many students who lacked motivation. As the online

learning is conducted from home, many parents still assume that they could still ask their

children for help with the household duties while they are online studying. Aside from

that, because of the New Normal Learning, many students claimed that it caused them

health problems such as headache, fatigue, or fever because of too many paperworks they

have to submit in short period of time, because of that, majority of students asked for

“academic freeze”. Some students also complained that they had blurry eyesight due to

long duration of starring at computer and phone screens, because of that, instead of

“academic freeze”, the Philippine Department of Education recommends “academic

ease” where they will lessen the academic work, this “academic ease” is not only

applicable for students but also for teachers.

Amadora (2020) cited that one of the main problems with the New Normal

Learning is the Internet Connection, our country has a slow and unstable internet. A

problem which cause delays during Online Learning. Another problem is the outdated

devices, some students can’t keep up, some students are struggling because of the device

they are using especially when it is their first time to use a gadget and there’s no one to

help them. Short attention span is also one of the main struggles during New Normal

Learning. Compared to traditional face to face classes where all the learners are in a

regular classroom and takes self-discipline to be focused, online classes take

determination to stay awake during discussion. Online Learning is studying from their

comfortable homes, the students can’t resist to that comfort. Because of lack of

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
interaction during the New Normal Learning, the students are easily distracted by their

smartphones and many things.

Uaminal (2020) around three million children in the Philippines failed to enroll in

school year 2020 – 2021, according to Uaminal’s survey, some failed to enroll because of

financial problems and unemployment caused by COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than

registering to a school to study, some students chose to apply for a job to help their

family who lost their job due to COVID-19 pandemic and some of the students decided

to enroll and apply for a job at the same time also called “working student”.

Dawal (2021) stated that majority of schools’ academic performance ranked down

because of lack of guidance and assistance. Some of the parents of the students does not

know the lesson so they can’t guide them. The teacher had to visit the students’ home to

know if the student can keep up with their lesson and make a progress. Teachers

struggled as well, and experience the same issues as their students, such as unstable

internet connection, trouble understanding the lesson, and many more. Dawal also stated

that the parent’s main concern is to provide the students with gadgets and prepaid loads

for internet connectivity

Embudo (2021) cited that the most common cause of stress in the family was

financial difficulty due to loss of income or jobs. Financial difficulties resulted in

children and adolescents’ lack of access to gadgets and data load for online classes. 82%

of the learners Many of the parents complained that they have to buy data load for

classes instead of using the money to buy food. Embudo also reported that bullying

among children aged six (6) to seventeen (17) years old, with verbal, physical, and

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
cyberbullying incidents at 27%. The children and teens are bullied for their physical

characteristics and gender identity (dark-skinned, gay, short, fat).

Prabha (2020) based on his study, students are easily distracted at home and time

management is a challenge for the students. Being at home makes us relax, when together

with the family, the student’s focus at attention span decreases. Because of poor time

management, many students develop toxic sleeping habits with the pressure to complete a

task on time.

It is noticeable that there are many struggles faced by students, parents, and

teachers with the sudden transition of Traditional face to face learning to Digital

Education Program. The new normal learning left them with a lack of motivation, some

says it is because of lack of classroom. Another problem is the inconsistency of the

schedules and applications, some teachers use Google Meet and some uses Zoom, which

leads confusion to many students. Many students also felt that the curriculum changed as

well, the workload feels a lot more compared to traditional face to face learning. It may

be because of the student hasn’t still fully adapt the new set up and because of decreased

motivation that is why they always describe their school works as increasing after

transitioning to the new normal. E-learning may have advantages such as it saves money

unlike when in face to face a person have to pay for transportation and food, e-learning is

environmentally friendly because it reduces pollution, and another advantage is the

person can personalize its learning path, but not everyone can have that. E-learning is

inaccessible to others because some have very limited access to internet, the personalized

space for learning is not for everyone too, many students struggle to focus because of the

background noises, sharing a study room with other family members. (Lynch, 2020)

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
According to the data from the Phillippine Department of Education, about 4

million students were not able to enroll for the last school year. This kind of scene will

continue unless they will improve the educational system, or the government will take

action and help the students like providing funds for their mobile learning.

A similar study of finding out the struggles of new normal learning during

pandemic on the mental health of the students shows that 859 high school students with

the age ranging 12 – 16 showed that the new normal learning affects their mental health.

The results showed 54% of the students experience depression, anxiety, PSTD and

suicidal ideation. (Rao, 2021)

Based on the research conducted by Dayagbil, Palompon, Garcia, and Olvido

(2021), the sudden change of learning resulted problems especially for learners who does

not have any access with technology. The new normal learning modality caused by

pandemic made a gap between the learners who have connectivity and for those without.

The continuing academic system has been a challenge for teachers and students due to

access and internet connectivity.

Gautam (2020) stated that online learning causes sense of isolation, a student can

learn a lot from being in the company of their classmates. But on online classes, they are

minimal interactions between the students and teachers. The only way to interact with

students and teachers is through online such as online messaging applications, emails,

video calls and more.

Laurie P. Dringus (2000) stated that the expectiations are high for a different kind

of interaction in new normal learning especially online learning. Because it frees the

students from inconvenient time schedules and being late in class because of time spent

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
from traveling to campus. Aside from the basic expectations, however, the students only

know a little about what they can expect from their new normal learning experience. The

generation of learners nowadays are called “digital actives” since they grew up with

gadgets such as smartphones. Dringus added that another reason of confusion or lack of

clarity may be due to not fully orienting the learners to the type of activities that are

likely to occur online.

This are the problems faced by the students based on the several studies. This is

why many students protests and seek help, the students and parents are protesting to

improve the Digital Education Program or if they can’t improve it, they want to bring

back the face to face learning even though it is limited. But still, the Philippine

Department of Education has no choice but to continue Digital Education Program for the

people, the Philippine Department of Education have to provide education even though a

crisis occurred. The students are not the same, not everybody has the means to adapt to

the new normal learning set up, implementing online learning as an alternative to educate

the students is proven to be ineffective and insufficient by previous studies.

Coman et al., (2020) conclude that the sudden shift of educational system resulted

inevitable problems, the learners’ ability to cope up with the situations, effectiveness of

the new normal learning, the country’s internet speed problem, the cost of technological

materials to use, and teachers’ lack of technology skills. The teachers also needed a

training on familiarizing the online platforms and the students were not prepared for the

unexpected shift from the traditional face to face set up to the online modality due to slow

internet and lack of basic skills for computer operations.

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
Like the country Philippines, other countries implemented the Digital Education

Project too, but the situation is similar to our country. Not every student has an access to

Education. Financial and Technology problems is the barrier between the enrolled

students and unenrolled students.

Helen Flores (2021) based on Flores’ research, about four (4) in ten (10) students

do not have any devices for the new set up which is the new normal distance learning.

The poll taken found only 58% of students enrolled aged five (5) to twenty (20) year old

Filipinos who has their device ready for distance learning. The devices are 27% owned,

12% bought, 10% borrowed, 9% given, and 0.3% rented. The remaining 42% of the

respondents said they do not have a device for distance learning.

Narayanan Ramaswamy (2022) stated that the pandemic caused several

challenges and affected more than 1.6 billion learners in public and private schools.

Dropout rate rised, learning losses, and increased digital divide.

Gautam, (2020) concluded that it is difficult to learners to focus on screen for long

periods of time which can lead to procrastinating. With the new normal learning, the

students are most likely to procrastinate especially with online learning where there is a

greater chance for students to be distracted by social media or gaming applications. It is

hard for the teachers too to keep their online classes engaging and interactive to help

students stay focused on the lesson. Gautam also added that it is hard to focus because of

internal distractions, many students are feeling sad and anxious because of the pandemic,

some are coping with the trauma of family members losing their jobs and getting sick.

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
Digital Education Program has its advantages where the students can continue

their study but there are disadvantages that had a big impact to their health.

Theoretical Framework

The researcher came up with the idea of using the concept of Berlo’s SMCR

Model of Communication and The Lasswell Formula combined to find out the challenges

faced by the Selected Grade 10 Students in the Digital Education.

Source Message Channel Receiver

Figure 1: Berlo’s SMCR Model of Communication

The model of David Berlo represents a communication process that occurs as a

SOURCE drafts messages based on one's communication skills, attitudes, knowledge,

and social and cultural system. These MESSAGES are transmitted along CHANNELS,

which can include sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. A RECEIVER interprets

messages based on the individual's communication skills, attitudes, knowledge, and

social and cultural system. (Suresh, 2003)

METHOD
This chapter will present the methodology of the study by which the researchers

activities were undertaken. This will include the research design, respondents of the

study, the research instruments, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

The study to be used is Descriptive Method in order to describe the nature of a

study through survey questionnaires, in order to gather accurate information about the

topic that the researchers investigated, it also describes the effects of the study to the

Grade 10 Students of First Progressive Academy.

According to Polit and Hungler (1999), Descriptive method describes what exist

and can uncover new facts and meanings. The purpose of this design is to observe,

describe, and document aspects of a situation as it naturally occurs.

In order to fulfil the objectives of this study, the researchers used the quantitative

method. Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical,

mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and

surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques.

Quantitative research focuses on gathering numerical data and generalizing it across

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
groups of people or to explain a particular phenomenon (Babbie & Mujis, 2010). This

design is an excellent way of finalizing results and proving or disproving a hypothesis

(Shuttleworth, 2008).

Respondents of the Study and Sampling Technique

The respondents were selected Grade 10 Students on Deca Homes Loma de Gato,

Marilao, Bulacan. The respondents were selected through survey questioning that

determined their opinions about the struggles of New Normal Learning. The respondents

were chosen by using random sampling technique

Research Instruments

The researcher considered survey questionnaire in checklist form as the right

instrument for gathering data for the study. It was prepared for the purpose of collecting,

classifying, and interpreting information. The questionnaires were designed based on the

statement of the problem that the researchers have formulated. It was used in the study in

order to obtain the profile of the participants and to find if the New Normal Learning is

effective to the public. The survey type of getting the data helped the researchers to

justify the objectives of the study. These enabled the researcher to have pertinent data.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher prepared questionnaire in the form of checklist based from the

given statement of the problem submitted to the research teacher for checking and

validation of the given questions. After the research teacher approved the questionnaire

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
The researcher conducted a survey to 54 4 th year student participants on

Deca Homes Loma de Gato, Marilao Bulacan. The researcher properly distributed the

questionnaires, and lastly, the researcher retrieved the questionnaires to tabulate, analyze

and interpret the data.

Statistical Tools

The researcher collected the data needed and analyzed the gathered data with the

help of statistical tools. The researches gave survey questionnaire to the chosen

respondents. The following are the statistical tools that were used in this study together

with their corresponding formulas.

1. Percentage

This statistical tool was used to established the frequency and percentage

Conclusions

The following are the conclusions drawn from the study:

For table 1.1, the results imply that most of the respondents are 16 years old

because the population used by the researchers are 4 th year high school students or Grade

10 Students. Majority of Grade 10 students struggles with their studies because of the

New Normal Learning. Majority of students and teachers complained that many of their

students are distracted and can’t engage them to listen during classes.

According to Nabor (2021), Online learning has its flaws, and student

engagement in the online classroom has been affected because of it. It is important to

know the issues students face that hinder their engagement in order to know how to

improve their engagement in the online classroom.

GRADE 10

Results for table 1.2 implies that majority of the respondents who struggles are

female, because most of the students who are enrolled to 4 th year high school or Grade 10

are female. According to Korlat (2021), loneliness and domestic responsibilities are also

hindrance to the female students’ ability to keep up with distance learning. The female

students can’t concentrate and focus when studying at home.

The average weighted mean is 4.44 in table 2.1, means that the respondents

agreed that they struggle with the New Normal Learning because of lack of technology.

The respondents are aware of technology related problems to the New Normal Learning

themselves, the result stated that when it comes to reconsider studying, their level of

agreement is high compared to other statements.

Based on the study of Salman (2020), thousands of students still can’t access

Online Learning, students from low income families were most likely to be left out of the

New Normal Learning System.

Grade 10 students still agree as presented on table 2.2, the student respondents are

aware about Financial Problems during the New Normal Learning. Many student

respondents agreed that they reconsidered learning and some agreed that because of the

New Normal Learning, the drop out rate increased.

According to Shuja et. al. (2021) drop out rate in schools especially in third

world countries is always an issue and the situation has been worsened by the COVID-19

Pandemic. The cause of drop outs of the students stated is Financial Problems, people

were retrenched and some finds it hard to make a living, which caused the parents send

their children out and stop them from attending schools.

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
Most Grade 10 Students agreed as resulted in table 2.3, that they lack motivation

and procrastinate this New Normal Learning with the highest mean of 4.40. The

statement

“Lack of interaction with teachers and classmates lead to Lack of Motivation this New

Normal Learning.” got the lowest weighted mean of 4.27.

Limitations of the Study

The study started on March 2022 up to June 2022 in Deca Homes Loma de Gato

Marilao Bulacan. Research respondents which was the Grade 10 students, were limited to

the students ages 14 to 17 to know the struggles of New Normal Learning to Grade 10

students. This study did not include person ages 18 and above since majority of the Grade

10 students are minor. The technicalities and implementation of the program were not

covered in this study but only the opinion of the respondents regarding their struggles

with New Normal Learning.

Recommendation

The following are the recommendations suggested by the researcher of this study:

1. The researcher recommends to add another demographic profile that will help

future studies in Struggles of New Normal Learning such as:

a. Family Monthly Income

b. School

2. The Department of Education should focus on Lack of Technology because based

on the findings, the respondents were not yet ready to the new learning system.

GRADE 10
FIRST PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY, INC.
Department of Education should implement Face to Face classes again or provide

gadgets for students who does not have an access with technology.

3. Ensure that education reaches all of the learners, especially students with limited

access to internet. The learners must also learn life skills education that can help

them prevent risks to their safety and be aware to their rights.

4. Department of Education should provide tablets or any gadget in every school or

Local Government Unit and weekly mobile data to every student to make sure

there are no student left behind. The days of learning can be alternate, eg.

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are Online classes while Tuesday and Thursday

are the days for Modules.

5. New Normal Learning should:

a. Encourage the students to interact, the teachers can catch the students’

attention by creating a welcoming environment and building strong

relationships with students.

b. Creating engaging lesson plans like starting the lesson with a quiz game

or anything the students has interest.
