Intranatal Care
DEFINITION:
Care of woman in all stages of labor is known as
intranatal care.
INTRANATAL SERVICES:
Child birth is a normal physiological process, but
complications may arise, septicemia may arise result from
unskilled and septic manipulations and tetanus neonatrum
from the use of unsterile instruments. The emphasis on
the cleanliness. It entails:-
O Clean hands and fingernails
O Clean surface for delivery
O Clean cutting and care of cord
OBJECTIVES:
To provide thorough asepsis.
To prevent injury to baby and mother.
To prevent complications.
To provide care to the baby.

SCIENTIFIC BASE OF INTRANATAL CARE:
1. BREATHING AND RELAXATION:
Breathing – deep and slow paced breathing helps
in minimizing the pain.
Relaxation- relaxation is by using music and
guided imagery will help in reduction of pain.
2. HYDROTHERAPY AND EFFLEURAGE:
Hydrotherapy- Bathing, showering and whirlpool
baths with warm water is more helpful.
Effeurage and counter pressure- light massage
will help in minimizing the pain.
3. AMBULATION AND POSITION:
Ambulation enhances the uterine activity and
distracts the woman from the discomfort.
Different position used in first stage will speed up
the labor process.
4. BIRTHING BALL:
It is a large air filled rubber ball [60 cm in
diameter] made up of extra tough non slip burst
proof, that is easily wiped and clean. The woman
will be sitting over or learning on a birthing ball
after 2cm of dilatation for 15 minutes.
