1- Types of Organizational Buying Situations
A. The time and effort organizational buyers spend on a purchase usually depends on the
complexity of the product and how often the decision must be made. There are three
types of organizational buying situations:
1. A first time purchase of a product or service is a new-task buy.
2. A straight rebuy situation is a routine purchase of items needed buy a business-
to-business customer.
3. Modified rebuy situations surface when the buyer approaches a supplier and
requests a change in product specifications, delivery schedules, or a lower price.
B. Building strategic alliances
1. Large companies often form several alliances. Some strategic alliances take the
form of systems selling. System selling appeals to buyers who prefer to purchase
a package solution to a problem from a single seller.
A. Habitual buying decisions usually require very little consumer involvement and
brand differences are usually insignificant.
B. Variety-seeking buying decisions are characterized by low customer involvement,
but important brand differences.
C. Complex buying decisions are characterized by a high degree of involvement by the
consumer.

IV. Understanding the Buying Process of the Transactional, Consultative, and Strategic
Alliance Buyer
A. Transactional process buyers are, in most cases, well aware of their needs and usually
know a great deal about the products or services they intend to purchase.
1. Some value creation opportunities exist during and after a transactional sale.
B. Consultative process buyers often lack needs awareness or need help evaluating
possible solutions.
1. Complex products and services require assistance from a consultative salesperson.
2. Successful consultative salespeople focus a great deal of attention on needs
awareness.
C. Strategic alliance process buyers can present a major challenge to salespeople.
1. Step one in building an alliance is a careful study of the proposed partner.
D. The buyer resolution theory is based on the point of view that the final buying
decision is possible only after the prospect has answered five logical questions (see
Figure 8.4).

A. Perception is the process through which sensations are interpreted, using knowledge
and experience.
1. Perception is shaped by group influences and psychological and physiological
conditions within us.

B. Selective attention is screening out or modifying stimuli.
1. Impossible to be conscious of all inputs at one time.
2. Social and cultural background plus physical and psychological needs condition
the use of selectivity.
3. Buyers may screen out or modify information if it conflicts with previous
attitudes or beliefs.
4. Salespeople should review their own perceptions for accuracy.

8-1. The three prescriptions: (1) understand the buying process; (2) understand buyer
behaviour; and (3) develop prospect base.
8-2. A first-time purchase of a product or service is a new-task buy. Salespeople who are
involved in new-task buying situations must rely heavily on consultative selling skills. A
straight rebuy is a routine purchase of items needed by a business-to-business customer.
Once the initial sale is closed, the supplier will provide the agreed upon product as long
as the customer is satisfied. When a customer wants to modify product specifications,
change delivery schedules or renegotiate price, the stage is set for a modified rebuy
situation.
8-3. The five major steps in the typical buying process (see Figure 8.3): (1) need awareness; (2)
evaluation of solutions; (3) resolution of problems; (4) purchase; (5) and implementation.
8-4. Transactional process buyers are well aware of their needs and usually know a great deal
about the products or services they intend to purchase. Consultative process buyers often
lack needs awareness or need help evaluating possible solutions. Strategic alliance

process buyers may benefit from an alliance with a company that has similar business
interests. They seek to gain a mutual competitive advantage.
8-6. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs consists of (1) physiological needs—basic needs such as
hunger, thirst, shelter, etc., (2) safety and security needs—these needs represent the desire to
be free from danger, (3) social needs—these needs reflect our desire for affection and
approval by others, (4) esteem needs—these needs represent a desire to feel worthy in the
eyes of others, and (5) self-actualization needs—these needs are for self-fulfillment, a full
tapping of one’s potential.
8-7. The four group influences that affect buyer behaviour are (1) role influence, (2) reference
group, (3) social class influence, and (4) cultural influence.
8-8. Perception is the process whereby we receive stimuli (information) through our five
senses and then assign meaning to it. Perception determines what is seen and felt.
8-9. Emotional buying motives prompt the prospect to act because of an appeal to some
sentiment or passion. An example of an emotional buying motive is the romantic desire to
attract the opposite sex. Rational buying motives usually appeal to the prospect’s reason or
better judgment. Common rational buying motives include profit potential, quality of service,
and availability of technical assistance. Professional buyers in the industrial market are more
likely to be motivated by rational buying motives because they have been given the
responsibility of identifying the best value for the price.
8-10. Student responses will vary, but most will likely accept this definition of quality. We are
reminded that each customer is likely to possess a unique point of view in regard to quality.
8-1. This exercise is designed to develop the student’s awareness of the frequency of rational
buying motives in the business-to-business market and awareness of emotional buying
motives in the consumer market. Salespeople can develop strong selling appeals by studying
the appeals made in company advertisements.
8-2. Personal perceptions will certainly play a role in the acceptance of any automobile in the
luxury-car market. These buyers are often quite image conscious. Lexus is the luxury car
division of Toyota Company. The Genesis has a poor sales record in Canada.

8-3. Students will find a variety of information services offered by this company.
8-4. This exercise provides students with an opportunity to consider the importance of the
buying centre concept, in a context with which they are familiar. You might even ask
students to explore who all of the members of the buying centre would be at their institution
through interviewing some of the most likely participants.
8-5. Since there is a mainframe in existence, it is technically a modified rebuy; however, the
point of this exercise is to get students to recognize that a salesperson must treat it as a new
task buy. It is fifteen years since the last purchase, and many of the people involved in the
buying centre previously will have retired or otherwise moved on. There will be many new
participants in the buying centre, and given the importance of the purchase, the customer will
most likely treat this as a new task buy.
Role-Play Exercise
The goal of this role-play exercise is to give students practice in relationship building and need
discovery. Encourage students to prepare for the role-play by studying the information presented
on the consultative process buyer.
8-1. Ashley Pineda follows the Develop a Customer Strategy prescription of the
Strategic/Consultative Selling Model. Ashley understands that her customer has unique
demands and tries to gain insights on the needs of the customer throughout the selling
process.
8-2. Throughout the process Ashley pays close attention to what the customer is saying and
asks questions which help her gain information about the customers’ requirements. She asks
questions like – does the customer want a one-story or a two story? Does she want a
backyard? What is her price range?
8-3. A typical buying process that a middle-class couple would go through is – identifying a
need for a home (do we need a bigger space than the one that we are currently staying at?),
searching/gathering information (would this fall within a good school district?), evaluating
alternatives (would renting a bigger apartment solve our problem?), making a purchase
decision (do we have enough savings to make a down-payment?), the actual purchase (is this
a good investment?) and post-purchase evaluation (are we satisfied with our decision?).
8-4. The key influencing factors include the safety of the neighbourhood, whether the house
falls in a good school district and price/mortgage on the house. Both rational and emotional
buying motives are important. Rational motives are related to logical and factual reasoning
behind buying the house. Emotional motives are, for example, related to buying to get social
approval.

5. During the needs identification stage, Ashley can emphasize on the features (e.g., size) of
the house and how it will prove beneficial to the couple. She can provide them with
information regarding how good the school district/location of the house is. She can talk to
them about financing and figure out what their budget is and what can be done to maximize
their budget constraints.
6. Direct competitors would include other real-estate firms. Indirect competitors would
include apartment complexes and house rentals.
