Introduction - Patient Safety with the IEC Standard

The main objective of the electrical distribution design is

in the case of a Generator system).
• Classification ≥ 0.5 s and ≤ 15 s: a generator shall be
connected within 15 s to an electrical source for safety
services capable of maintaining it for a minimum period
of 24 h.

Electrical Distribution Principle

Continuity of services in the Hospital is mainly provided by:
• Multiple energy sources: Electrical Utilities, Generator backup system, UPS with battery.
The N+1 principle for Generator or UPS reinforces the continuity of services.
• A redundant energy path reduces significantly the mean time to recovery in case of outage. This
design is also necessary to implement full annual maintenance in a Hospital building operating 24/7.
The utilities incomers and Generator system are designed to limit any power shutdown to 15 s.;
this may be caused by a utilities outage or internal power network failure.
The UPS ensures 0.5 s continuity of service for the operating ward including at least 1 hour
of remaining battery time. The generator provides the total 3-hour endurance required by
the IEC 60364-7-710 standard for a medical location.

Energy availability in the Hospital is based on the • Main LV Switchboard

response utility contract should also be a factor
in the sizing of this backup system.

Save Money by Reducing Energy Costs

The Energy management system is the key

lever in reducing operational costs during
the building's life cycle.

• Energy usage analysis

Become aware of energy usage by turning
data into information and representing energy
usage and consumption through easy-to-
interpret graphical dashboards and reports.
Optimize energy usage
 • By comparing and visualizing hourly, daily,
weekly, monthly and yearly energy usage,
and the costs of different utilities.
 • By identifying and prioritizing which load
types, processes, areas or Hospitals provide
a better return on investment for energy
conservation initiatives. Configurable Dashboard Gadget for Analyzing Energy Usage report

See Digital applications for Large Buildings & Critical Facilities
- Part 1 Energy usage Analysis

• Power Factor Correction

Measuring and correcting power factor or
reactive power (kVAR) caused by inductive
loads like motors can be a fast ROI by
eliminating penalties charged by many utilities.
See Digital applications for Large Buildings & Critical Facilities
- Part 1 Power Factor Correction
Power Factor Trend report Varset
• Solar production self-consumption Capacitor Bank

By adding solar energy production, the building

produces its own energy. The energy consumed
from the grid is lower and the energy bill is
significantly reduced. In addition the building’s
environmental impact is reduced.
The photovoltaic system operates in parallel
to the utility supply and provides electricity to
the electrical installation during the hours of
photovoltaic production. In case of grid outage, Connext
CL-60A
the photovoltaic system must be automatically
3-Phase String Inverter
disconnected to prevent it from energizing the
distribution network and compromizing the
safety of utility workers.
The photovoltaic inverters may also operate
in back-up mode, in parallel to the diesel
generators. In this case, it is recommended
for stability reasons to limit the photovoltaic
production to 25% of generator production,
by using a central edge control system.

Maintain Compliance with the Regulations and Sustainability

• Sustainability reporting
Greenhouse gas reporting is based on
equivalent tonnes of CO2 emissions,
saved trees, km driven, etc.
The Building Energy Rating is directly linked
to energy consumption per square meter.

Carbon emissions are reported and segmented

Save Money by Optimizing Maintenance

IEC 60364-7-710 recommends the minimum

preventive maintenance to maintain the energy
availability performance in Healthcare buildings,
mainly through periodic backup tests.
• Diesel generator backup system
monthly test
Provides documented evidence of regular
generator system testing, including 50%
minimum connected load for 60 min periods
to improve the reliability.
This test report, by measuring time transfer
performance, can identify any generator
and transfer switch problems.

Back-up power testing

The Generator capacity report checks the Generator Load Summary report
redundancy performance depending on load
change. Load discrimination (Groups 2,1 and
0) is used to inform key decision of whether
to buy a new Generator or reinforce load
shedding automation.
• UPS monthly test:
The IEC 60364-7-710 standard recommends
monthly testing of the endurance UPS backup
system on battery within minimum 50%
connected load for 15 min. By incorporating an
auto test function, the Galaxy VS fulfills this
testing requirement.
In addition to this global auto test facility, a Lithium
battery system can identify precisely which cell
of the battery has failed when this occurs.
This optional accurate diagnosis reinforces
energy availability performance and

operational efficiency.
• Operating room Isolated power report

the report shows:
•Impedance graph - Displays a comparison
of impedance measurements with the
impedance threshold. The impedance
threshold is a blue line and the actual
measurements are shown as a green line.
A red line shows occasions when impedance
has dropped below the threshold.
•Transformer load graph - Displays a
comparison of transformer load
measurements to the load threshold.
The threshold is a blue line and the actual
measurements are shown with a green line.

has risen above the threshold.
