HISTORY OF INDIAN RAILWAY
The first railway proposals for India were made in Madras
SIRJEE CLASSES

in 1832.
The country's first train, Red Hill Railway (built by Arthur
Cotton to transport granite for road-building), ran from
Red Hills to the Chintadripet bridge in Madras in 1837.
India's first passenger train, operated by the Great Indian
Peninsula Railway and hauled by three steam locomotives
(Sahib, Sindh and Sultan), ran for 34 kilometres with 400
people in 14 carriages on 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge
track between Bori Bunder (Mumbai) and Thane on 16
April 1853.
On 3 February 1925, the first electric passenger train in
India ran between Victoria Terminus and Kurla.
In 1956, the first fully air-conditioned train was introduced between
Howrah and Delhi (Presently known as Poorva Express).
In 1986, computerized ticketing and reservations were introduced in
New Delhi.
HISTORY OF INDIAN RAILWAY
SIRJEE CLASSES
In February 2000, the Indian Railways website went online.
On 3 August 2002, IR began online train reservations and ticketing.

On 22 March 2020, Indian Railways announced a nationwide shutdown of

passenger rail service to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
Railway Budget History
The Railway Budget was usually presented 2 days before the Union
budget every year till 2016.
The central government approved merger of the Rail and General
budgets from 2017, ending a 92-year-old practice of a separate
budget for the nation's largest transporter.
R k shanmugham shetty , first finance minister presented the first Railway
Budget for independent India on 26 November 1947.
In the year 1999, Mamata Banerjee (later Chief Minister of West Bengal)
became the first female Railway Minister.
The last Railway Budget was presented on 25 February 2016 by Mr. Suresh Prabhu.
Zones and divisions of Indian Railways

headquarters.
In 1952, the existing rail networks were divided into 6 Zones 19
for administrative purpose. *Total divisions

There are a total of 19 zones (including Metro Railway, 70

Kolkata) and 70 Divisions on Indian Railway System.
Each of the divisions is headed by a Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), who
reports to the General Manager (GM) of the zone. A DRM can be appointed from
any of the eight organized services of Indian Railways, viz. Indian Railway Service
of Signal Engineers (IRSSE), Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS), Indian
Railway Personnel Service (IRPS), Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE),
Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), Indian Railway Service
of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) and Indian
Railway Stores Service (IRSS) for the tenure of 3 years.
The DRM is assisted by one or two Additional Divisional Railway Managers
(ADRM) in the working of the division.

Locomotives of India
A locomotive is also known as a loco or more popularly SIRJEE CLASSES

as an engine.
The Indian Railways primarily operates fleet of electric
and diesel locomotives, along with several compressed
natural gas (CNG) locomotives.
Steam locomotives are operated on a few World Heritage
sites and also run occasionally as heritage trains.
The country's first steam locomotive ran on the Red Hill Railway
(built by Arthur Cotton to transport granite for road-building)
from Red Hills to the Chintadripet bridge in Madras in 1837.
Locomotives in India are classified by gauge, motive power, the A Nilgiri Mountain Railway
work they are suited for, and their power or model number. steam locomotive.

Their 4 or 5 letter class name includes this information.

➢ First letter ------------------ track gauge,
➢ Second letter -------------- motive power (diesel or electric),
WAP-5
➢ Third letter ---------------- suitable traffic (goods, passenger, multi or shunting).
➢ Fourth letter -------------- locomotive's chronological model number.
But in 2002, a new classification was adopted in which the fourth letter in newer diesel
locomotives indicate horsepower range.

Railway Tracks
As of 31 March 2022, IR network spans 128,305 km (79,725 mi)
SIRJEE CLASSES

of track length, while the route length is 68,043 km.

Track sections are rated for speeds ranging from 80 to 200
km/h (50 to 124 mph), though the maximum speed attained by
passenger trains is 180 km/h (110 mph) during trial runs.

What is Rail Gauge?

The gauge of the railway track is a clear minimum vertical distance
between the inner sides of two tracks is called railway gauge.

That is, the distance between the two tracks on any railway route
is known as railway gauge.
Types of Rail Gauge
There are 4 types of railway gauge used in India.
1. Broad gauge, 2. Metre Gauge,
3. Narrow gauge 4. Standard gauge (for Delhi Metro).
Types of Rail Gauge
1. Broad Gauge SIRJEE CLASSES

Broad gauge is also called wide gauge or large line. The distance between the
two tracks in these railway gauges is 1676 mm (5 ft 6 in).
Broad gauge is the predominant gauge used by IR and
spans 65,093 km of route (94.10% of total route network),
as of 31 March 2022.
It is the broadest gauge in use across the world for regular passenger movement.
Broad gauge generated 100% of the freight output (net tonne-kilometres) and more
than 99% of the passenger output (passenger kilometres).
The first railway line built in India was a broad gauge line from Bore Bunder
(now Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus) to Thane in 1853.
2. Metre Gauge
The distance between the two tracks is 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3/8 in).
The metre gauge lines were made to reduce the cost.
All meter gauge lines except the Nilgiri Mountain Railway
which is a legacy run on a meter gauge in India will be
converted into broad gauge under project Unigauge.
PREVIOUS DFCCIL QUESTIONS
SIRJEE CLASSES
3. Narrow Gauge
The small gauge is called a Narrow gauge or a small line. SIRJEE CLASSES

The narrow-gauge railway is the railway track, in which

distance between two tracks is 762 mm (2 ft 6 in) and 610
mm (2 ft) .
Narrow gauges tracks were 1,294 km (2.15% of total route network) as of 31
March 2022.
4. Standard Gauge
The distance between the two tracks in this railway gauge
is 1435 mm (4 ft 8½ in).

In India, standard gauge is used only for urban rail transit

systems like Metro, Monorail and Tram.
All metro lines coming in urban areas will be made only in the standard gauge
because it is easy to get rolling stock for the standard gauge as compared to the
Indian gauge.
By 2016, the lines that are in operation are Delhi Metro, Rapid Metro Rail
Gurgaon, Bangalore Metro and Mumbai Metro.

Green Railways by 2030
In order to reduce its carbon footprint, the entire Indian Railways network will
be electrified by 2023. It will also instal 20GW of solar power by 2030

In August 2020, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted that "by 2030, we will be a

Different Train types of Indian Railway
Trains are sorted into categories which dictate the number of stops on a SIRJEE CLASSES

route, their priority on the network, and their fare structure.

Each express train is identified by a five-digit number.
If the first digit in the train number is 1 or 2, they are long-

special train which will operate for a limited period of time

Trains traveling in opposite directions along the same route are usually
labelled with consecutive numbers. However, there is considerable variation
in train numbers; some zones, such as Central Railway, have a less-systematic
method of numbering trains.
Trains are classified by average speed. A faster train has fewer stops (halts)
than a slower one, and is usually used for long-distance travel.

The names of the trains usually denote the regions they connect, the routes
they traverse, or a famous person or tourist spot connected with the train.
