VI: TEST PROCEDURE

STEP 1 : Determine the mass of the empty bucket that will be used in measuring the
mass of coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, cement and water using the manual
weighing scale. Calibrate the manual weighing scale.

STEP 2: Weigh the coarse aggregate in the manual weighing scale. The mass of the
coarse aggregate must be 23.64 kg according to the ACI mix design.
STEP 3: Weigh the fine aggregate
Inthe manual weighing scale. The mass of the fine aggregate must be 10.16
1 kg
according to the ACI mix design.

STEP 4: Weigh the cement and water in the manual weighing scale. The mass of the
cement must be 11.83 kg and the water must be 4.97 kg according to the ACI mix
design.

STEP 5: After getting the mass of the substances, put the dry substances into the
bagger mixer (coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and cement). Tilt the bagger mixer into
45 degree position and start mixing. Mix it together up to 4 minutes.
STEP 6: Afterr mixing all the dry substances/ingredients, put the sample amount of
water in bagger mixer and mix it again up to 5 minutes. Add more water if necessary.

STEP 7: Prepare the mixing pan and the slump cone apparatus. Pour all the content of
the concrete mixture in the pan. Fill the slump cone apparatus up to ⅓ and tamp it 25
times. Then pour another mixture up to ⅔ of the cone and tamp it again 25 times.
Lastly, fill the slump cone apparatus all the way up to the edge of the cone and tamp it
again 25 times.
STEP 8: Perform the slump cone test. Start it of with lifting the slump cone apparatus
upward and then pour all the mixture in the pan. Pu
Putt the slump cone apparatus beside
of the concrete mixture and then place the tamping rod above the slump cone and start
measuring the vertical distance of the concrete mixture.

STEP 9: After the slump cone test, get the concrete beam mold and the cylinder mold.
Using brush, apply certain amount of grease to avoid the sticking of concrete mixture to
the mold. Fill the cylinder mold with concrete mixture up to ⅓ of the mold and tamp it 25
times evenly. Then pour another mixture up to ⅔ and tamp it again 25 times. Lastly for
the cylinder mold, fill the cylinder mold up to the edge and tamp it again 25 times. For
the concrete beam mold, fill the beam mold up to ½ and tamp it 60 times evenly in i all
side of the beam. Then fill up the beam mold up to the edge and tamp it again 60 times.
VII: CALCULATION
IX: OBSERVATION AND CONCLUSION

Having a limited face-to-face class has given students the opportunity to conduct
a laboratory experiment for the CMT Lab Course. Its title is “Making and Curing of
Concrete Test Specimens”, its objective is to create a concrete mix design using the
American Concrete Institute (ACI) method. The students followed the proper procedure
in performing the experiment and came up with important values through the use of the
tools and equipment available in the school laboratory. With the guidance of our
professor in conducting the experiment, the result was successful. This experiment
greatly helps us, civil engineering students, to further understand and gain more
knowledge in mixing concrete to achieve a good quality concrete.
In the activity, we observed that it is necessary to measure accurately the water,
cement, and aggregates to have a good quality mixture. The mixer should be in an
upright position to mix it well and avoid spilling out. Moreover, the slump test procedure
is also an important process to determine the consistency and workability of concrete. In
tamping the mixture we notice that it helps to compact the mixture, enhance its strength
and avoid honeycomb in concrete. The number of tamping is vary according to the area
of the container.
We, therefore, conclude that American Concrete Institute (ACI) method is
important in creating a concrete mix design. It is also significant to follow the procedure
of the ASTM C143: Standard Test Method for Slump of Portland Cement Concrete to
make sure the consistency and strength of the concrete. Furthermore, ASTM C31 is
helpful to secure the concrete. It includes a procedure that is beneficial in maintaining
the moisture of the concrete and design strength by providing the standard curing of
concrete test specimens.
