The Algarve Tourism Board (RTA) is predicting occupancy
rates of 80 percent in hotels for New Year’s Eve, and 100

Entity (ERS) received 50,694 complaints
(37,872 in the same period last year), 9,133

In total, 60,391 processes were submitted
to the ERS for consideration in the first half
of the year (complaints, compliments and
suggestions) referring to public, private and
social health units, which represents an in-
crease of 32.6 percent in relation to the same
period of the year.
The Regional Health Administration
(ARS) of the North is the one with the
highest number of establishments subject to
complaints (475), followed by the ARS of
Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (388) and the ARS
of the Center (259).
Among the complaints related to the topic

“Access to health care”, in a total of 14,091
mentions of the topic, the document high-
lights the subject “Response in good time/
reasonable time”, which appears in more
than one in three cases (38 percent).
In the private sector, in inpatient units,
the most mentioned topics were “Financial

According to the report, public sector pro-
viders received the highest number of com-
pliments (7,141) and suggestions (232). The

In Portugal, the use of banknotes and
coins has declined, despite it being the coun-
try in the eurozone where citizens have less
access to payment cards (debit and credit).
According to the SPACE study, carried
out by the European Central Bank (ECB),

nfortunately, the change of
pace comes too late to save us
from an acute global climate
emergency.
The good news came from the National
Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory in California. They
have finally achieved ‘ignition’: that is,
they have managed to get more energy
OUT of fusing hydrogen molecules
together to make helium than they had to
put IN to make the fusion happen.
Theoretically, that reaction should release
a huge amount of energy from a relatively
tiny amount of hydrogen. That’s the
whole reason for working on the problem,
and the physics works just fine. But it’s
the engineering problem from Hell, and
in more than fifty years of experiments
they’ve always had to put more energy IN
than they got OUT.
Indeed, a long-running joke in the
field has been that research on getting
useful energy out of nuclear fusion is
subject to the “Law of the Conservation
of Difficulty”: whenever one problem
is solved, a new one of equal difficulty
emerges to take its place. But those days
may now be over.
Proof of concept
The big news from the Livermore Lab is
that they focused 2.05 megajoules of laser
light onto a tiny capsule of hydrogen fuel
for a few nanoseconds and triggered an
explosion – well, first an explosion, then
an implosion – that produced 3.15 MJ of
energy. That’s ‘ignition’: 54% more energy
out than in.
In scientific language, that’s ‘proof of
concept’. Nobody really doubted that
fusion could eventually be made to
produce useful energy one way or another,
but it still needed to be demonstrated in
practice. Now it has been.
In terms of the actual energy output,
however, it’s pathetic: about enough
to boil one kettle. The heavy lifting of
making fusion energy work on a huge
scale at a commercially viable cost has still
to be done, and the Livermore lab isn’t
even working on those issues.
Other people are, however, and the signs
are promising. The biggest project is the
35-country International Thermonuclear
Experimental Reactor (ITER) in France, a
huge underground magnetic fusion device
that broke ground in 2010, will go active
in 2025, and should be producing really
interesting results by the mid-2030s.
Half a dozen smaller and more
recent private start-ups are exploring
alternative ways to the same goal, and

several promising ones hope to have
demonstration reactors up and running
within this decade. The front runners
are Commonwealth Fusion Systems
in Massachusetts and General Fusion,
a Vancouver-based Canadian-UK
partnership.
The ‘Skunk Works’ at Lockheed Martin
is also still in the game, working its way
through progressively more advanced
models of a compact fusion reactor at the
rate of one every couple of years. One
way or another, the job will get done.
Long-term
The long-term promise of fusion power
is dazzling. It offers effectively limitless
energy from an inexhaustible fuel:
isotopes of hydrogen that are derived
from water (deuterium) and from
enriched lithium (tritium). The process
cannot result in melt-down, produces no
radioactive waste, and doesn’t take up
much land.
Once fusion can produce large amounts of
electricity at an affordable price, we can
stop burning fossil fuels entirely. Unless
there are further dramatic improvements
in battery weight and storage capacity,
we’ll probably need hydrogen for aircraft
and ships, but you just use the abundant
electricity to split water for the hydrogen.
Wind and solar power will probably
remain competitive in cost, but if you’re
a superstitious peasant you can also retire
your existing fission-based nuclear plants.
So what’s not to like about fusion? Only
the delivery date.
It is highly unlikely that there will be
even a single prototype fusion reactor
producing commercially relevant amounts
of electricity before 2030. Greenhouse
gas emissions may have stopped rising by
then, but they probably won’t be falling
yet. So current forecasts say that we will
be irrevocably committed to +1.5°C
higher average global temperature by
2029.
By 2040 we could be seeing a major roll-
out of fusion power plants if we’re lucky,
accounting for as much as 5% of global
energy use, but any faster would require
implausible changes in the way the world
works. By then we’ll be staring +2.0°C
in the face – or already experiencing it, if
some of the big feedbacks are starting to
kick in.
Fusion power may give us a long, happy
future if we get through the next 20-30
years without a civilisational collapse, but
it won’t be the magical vehicle that carries
us through the crisis unharmed. We’ll
have to figure that one out on our own.

On a bright and sunny autumn day in the Jardim das Comunidades, Almancil, the
congregation of Christ The King turned out in force to thank the people who do so
much to help, support, and care for the members of the community who need it most.

I
t was standing room only on Sunday
27 November when Christ The
King welcomed and honoured
representatives of the Bombeiros
of S.B de Alportel, Loulé and Messines,
the Junta de Freguesia de Almancil,
ASCA (Associação Social e Cultural
de Almancil) and the Portimão Soup
Kitchen.
During the service, which was led
by Rev’d Kelvin Burke, presentations
and gifts were made to each of the
organizations, all from funds raised by
members of the Congregation throughout
2022.
The Bombeiros were presented with cash
and vouchers for much needed equipment
for each of their brigades.
ASCA were presented with 42 large
Christmas Gift boxes filled with
Christmas goodies for the residents of
their centre in Almancil and the folk who
attend their day care centre.
The Portimão Soup Kitchen took away
with them a mound of blankets for
the homeless in their area that had
been knitted during the long days of
lockdown and donated by members of the
Congregation and knitters through the
Algarve during Lockdown.
Speaking for Christ The King Anglican
Church, Terry Blackman said “The fires
this Summer clearly identified how
dependent we all are for the volunteers
that protect us and keep us safe. We
were happy to step in and help when
the Junta called as the fires raged
around us. Equally, when the Ukrainian
refugees arrived in March and posed a
real challenge for the Junta in housing,
feeding and caring for them, Christ The
King was able to help both physically and
financially, and this work still continues
today.”

The schools have a protocol with Animal Rescue Algarve,
with who they collaborate for the betterment of animal lives
in Loulé.
Students from both pre and
basic school levels, from the
Almancil Schools Group
have put their artistic skills at
the service of animal welfare.
The initiative results from the
protocol signed between the
schools and Animal Res-
cue Algarve, which aims at
consolidating the educational
work of both parties, in order
to build more sensible and
conscious future adults.
As the end of the first school
term comes to an end, the
students decided to focus on
themes that reinforce the im-
portance of raising awareness
of animal mistreatment, sterili-
sations, the negative impact of
having dogs on chains or street
cat colonies, among other
topics.
Some works focused on ex-
plaining how to proceed with
sterilisations and why, while
others appealed to a greater
consciousness of the negative
repercussions of putting dogs,
“who also have feelings and
can feel pain”, on chains. Some
other interpretations had a
more creative angle, exploring
the multiple ways the words
‘cat’ and ‘dog’ as written across
a variety of languages, as well
as their dietary habits.
Among the various drawings
and creative interpretations,
the students also organised a
food and goods fundraiser, re-
sulting (among other things) in
donations of animal feed, toys,
and leashes for Animal Rescue
Algarve’s rescued animals.
Located in the Cabanita area,
in Loulé, the non-profit’s
shelter has seen the rescue
and rehoming of over 1000
animals since 2018. Animal
Rescue Algarve, whose focus
expands well beyond its shelter,
has reinforced is commitment
towards the importance of
Education, mostly through
visits and protocols with
schools – Interactions that,
according to the charity, are
central to a systemic change of
how animals are perceived and
treated in Portugal.

Madeira was
internationally
recognised by the
Guinness Book of Records as
having “The greatest fireworks
show in the World” so it
comes as no surprise that it has
been accredited as among the
best destinations to celebrate
the New Year with this year
being no different.
On New Year's Eve, the
carefully curated fireworks
show brings magic by invading
the bay with the most varied
colours. At 11:45pm there will
be a great show located on
Funchal Quay, in the form of
a countdown. Conducted by a
DJ, there will be a pyrotechnic
and audio-visual show, whose
projection of pieces will
alternate with lasers, drones
and innovative luminous
elements, whereby there will
be light dances in the sky,
among other surprise effects,
that will lead the spectators
into the New Year, followed
by a magnificent fireworks
display.
The eight minute firework
display will have a total of 61
fireworks at the amphitheatre
in Funchal, between Pier 8
and Almirante Reis beach, at
sea and Porto Santo Island.
This majestic spectacle of light
and colour, with pyrotechnic
effects that combine the most
modern design, will present
effects never before seen on
New Year's Eve in the Region.
Additionally, the Funchal
City Council announced
the holding of a show to
mark New Year’s Eve in the
Santa Catarina Park, in the
city centre, indicating that
the funds raised will be for
charity. According to Lusa
"This show is an offer from the
city of Funchal for the entire
population. It is an inclusive
spectacle and involves all
the parishes of the county",
said the president of the
municipality, Pedro Calado, in
a press conference.
The Santa Catarina Park, a
public garden in the city centre
with a privileged view of the
amphitheater, was the chosen
venue for the event promoted
by the City Council (PSD/
CDS-PP), which takes place
for the first time this year.
"All the funds raised will be
used for social causes in the
parishes," said Pedro Calado,
reinforcing: "Next year will
be a challenging year and we
cannot fail to support the most
deprived families."

The bells of Portugal
One thing Christianity brought to the
Iberian Peninsula, in great abundance, is
a fantastical cacophony of bells.
Of course, it’s not a uniquely Iberian thing,
there clearly seems to be an ongoing obsession
with the fine art of campanology all over the
European continent, not least of all in France.
However, the Iberian variety do seem to be
unusually bold - as in LOUD!
These great clappering rogues have often
brought me (the typically unwary visitor) many
a rude awakening at secluded Portuguese Praças.
Just as, perhaps, I might have embarrassed
myself by rudely dozing off mid-coffee-break
on a sultry summer’s afternoon, “BONG!-
BONG!!” go those bells. Yes, no fewer than two
obligatory (extra loud) “BONGS!” that might
put Big Ben to shame when experienced at
such close proximity. For some reason church
clocks in Portugal often chime twice at the top
of each hour, as if there was even the remotest
possibility that anyone who isn’t absolutely
stony deaf could have missed the first almighty
CLANG!
Even English cities with their vast, grey
(Coronation Street) chimney-scapes are
endlessly filled with often repetitive bell chimes
which grate through mist and murk bearing the
unmistakable wafts of coal smoke and kerosene;
tainting the chill Autumnal twilight.
In Ireland, at 6pm sharp, Irish TV dedicates a
whole minute of its daily programme schedule
to the monotones of an “Angelus” bell which
routinely rings out before Radio Telefis
Éireann›s main evening news bulletin. This is
an Irish broadcasting tradition that predates
television in Éire, hailing all the way back to
Radio Éireann days which broadcast from
studios located at the historic An Post (GPO)
building in O’Connell Street during the 1950’s.

Frankly, I’ve always been slightly unnerved
by the sound of even the most distant church
bells. Having been brought up in a tiny Welsh
community where, if my childhood recollections
serve me correctly, chiming church bells always
seemed to hold somewhat funereal undertones.
In later life, whilst visiting large English towns
and cities, weekend mornings often commenced
far earlier than originally anticipated because
the dreaded chain-ringers commenced their
high decibel rehearsal routines bright and early.
Seemingly endless renditions that prematurely
led me (bleary eyed) to the nearest coffee shop.
I remember feeling distinctly unnerved by those
ecclisiastical renditions because they evoked
such somber childhood flashbacks; of days spent
whispering behind respectfully drawn curtains.
I guess the abundance of ancient (yet still highly
efficient bells) are to be expected in any great
European city where there are bound to be
an abundance of churches and cathedrals all
merrily tinkling, bonging and jangling especially
on the Sabbath and during religious festivals.
Festivals that often hold particular reverence
in certain regions. For instance, the run up to
Easter is particularly well marked in Sevilla
where the incessant chimes of carillons resonate
across this beautiful city, seemingly at all hours.

considered the forerunners
of our New Year’s

First Drive: BMW X1
BMW’s new third-generation arrives with
some major enhancements. Ted Welford
tries it out in Munich.
What is it?
SUVs dominate BMW’s
line-up these days, with
the numerically numbered
‘X’ models ranging from
one to seven taking a vast
proportion of the German
firm’s sales.
Now BMW is turning its
attention to its junior SUV
– the X1. First arriving in
2009 as pretty much the
only premium compact
SUV, it now faces more
competition than ever, with
every rival marque now
offering a model in this
segment. BMW has thrown
everything it’s got at this
new third-generation car,
but does it impress?
What’s new?
There’s very little that’s not
new – starting with the
design, which gets a far
bolder and more upright
stance than its predecessor.
It’s grown in size too,
meaning it offers more space
inside, while the rest of the
cabin has been overhauled
with the addition of BMW’s
latest in-car technology,
known as the Curved
Display and running its
latest operating system.
Though the previous X1
came with a plug-in hybrid
later in life, there are two
new PHEV models being
introduced, offering a longer
range, more power, and
quicker charging. There’s
also an all-electric iX1 –
however, these models don’t
arrive for a good few months
yet so our focus here is on
the regular petrol and diesel
options.
What’s under the
bonnet?
Despite the addition of the
new plug-in X1s, more than
half of buyers will stick with
a petrol or diesel model in
the X1. Go for a diesel and
there’s the choice of the
148bhp sDrive18d (the only
front-wheel-drive X1) or the
211bhp xDrive23d.
But our test car is the sole
petrol option offered in
the UK – the xDrive23i.
It’s a new unit for
BMW – a mild-hybrid
2.0-litre turbocharged
unit developing 215bhp
and 360Nm of torque.
As with all X1s, it uses a
seven-speed dual-clutch
automatic transmission, and
can dispatch 0-60mph in
6.9 seconds and hit a top
speed of 145mph. Thanks
to its light hybrid element,
it’s not bad on fuel either,
with BMW claiming up
to 43.5mpg and CO2
emissions between 146 and
162g/km.
What’s it like to drive?
The X1 has always been one
of the better-driving cars in
its segment, and this latest
model only builds on that.
Motoring
Our test car, in M Sport
trim – getting adaptive
M suspension and sports
steering as a result – was
excellent behind the wheel.
The steering has a smooth,
linear feel to it and really
inspires you to drive it more
enthusiastically than you
would many of its rivals. It
clings on through the bends
with minimal body roll too,
and is a superb effort for a
compact SUV.
This mild-hybrid petrol is a
great option too, delivering
plenty of punch, enhanced
further with a cool ‘boost’
paddle on the side of the
steering wheel, enriching
the responsiveness. A mild
gruffness to the engine on
full chat and noticeable wind
noise from the large door
mirrors are our only small
complaints.
How does it look?
While the previous X1 was
a pretty bland, if inoffensive,
option, BMW has certainly
given this latest model a
much bolder design. Quite
different to its predecessor, it
gets a more upright stance,
with BMW raising the front
end to give it a chunkier
look. The front nose, which
appears to almost be leant
over the bumper of the
car, can look a bit odd in
pictures, but is much more
pleasant in person.

than a crossover like its impressive Curved Display quality issues, and there’s no
predecessor, with the LED we’ve already touched on. ignoring the X1’s high price,

who have suffered damage and loss as a result
of the heavy rains recently, here is what you
can do.
The last few days have been heartbreaking
for many people who have seen their property
damaged by flooding and landslides. Now that
the storm has calmed down, it is time to take
stock of the damage. However, the news is not
good for most consumers as only a small per-
centage of them have taken out insurance to
protect their property against extreme weather
events.
Do you have insurance?
Check the contractual conditions of your
insurance policies. If you have taken out cover to
protect you against the consequences of natural
phenomena such as “storms”, “floods” and
“landslides”, please take photographs of
the damage suffered and contact your
insurer to report what happened.

Unfortunately, you may belong to the
vast majority of consumers who didn’t take
out insurance, either because you didn’t
know you could, or because you can’t afford

Video games and cognitive
performance in pre-adolescents
The negative consequences of video games are one of the common worries of
parents concerning their children. However, a study published in the medical

However, the present study
analysed data on a larger scale on
the cognitive development of the
adolescent brain in 2,217 children,
the Adolescent Brain Cognitive
Development study (ABCD study),
funded by the American Institutes
of Health (NIH).
Researchers reviewed partic-
ipant responses, cognitive test
results and brain imaging of
approximately 2,000 children
between the ages of 9 and 10, di-
vided into two groups: those who
never play video games and those
who play them every day for three
or more hours.
This was the duration chosen
because it exceeds the American
Academy of Paediatrics recom-

Both groups had to perform the
same two tasks. In the first, arrows

to the children, who had to click
on the corresponding button as
quickly as possible.
For the second task, the young-
sters were shown a first face and

same person, this time to test their
working memory, a short-term
memory.
After correcting some related
statistical biases, such as parental

researchers found that children
who played video games consist-
ently, obtained better results on
the tasks.

What it’s like being
hard of hearing
I recently went to a
Christmas Party, there
were 30 or so people
attending, and as the
party wore on the noise
level went up, my hearing
ability went down. Yes, this
happens to most people,
and we just talk louder
to each other to make a
conversation. But if you
are hard of hearing in the
first place, people don’t
know you have a ‘disability’
because you can’t see it.
I admit I am becoming
hard of hearing, though
most wouldn’t know it, and
I began to feel isolated
because I couldn’t even
hear the person sitting
next to me and I started
feeling invisible. Other
hearing-impaired people
will understand this so
well.
In most cases, hearing aids
are worn to improve low-
level hearing impairments
that fall well below the
thresholds set by any
regulations for hearing
disabilities. The logic here
is that wearing a hearing
aid helps to provide some
assistance for hearing loss
or impairment, and this
eliminates, to some degree,
the state of disability.
Therefore, you cannot
be classified as having a
disability just because you
wear a hearing aid.
Bit of a Catch-22
situation isn’t it.
If you suffer from slight
sight loss, you would wear
glasses, right? You go off
to the optician, spend some
time having your sight
tested, then find frames
that ‘suit you’, and people
complement or admire your
‘aid’ to seeing. Before you
take the step to wearing
glasses, jokes about ‘arms
not being long enough’ or
‘blind as a bat’ abound, and
it’s all socially acceptable.
But, be a bit deaf, and
see what happens. You
look blankly at the person
talking to you, try to work
out what they might have
said, and maybe because
you have the gist of the
conversation, you are able
to make some - probably
noncommittal – response.
Admit you can’t hear,
and people roll their eyes
behind your back and try
shouting - not always the
answer, as anyone who is
deaf will tell you - or they
say, in an exasperated voice
‘oh it doesn’t matter’, and
you are dismissed as being
a half-wit or something.
Wearing an aid for hearing
loss is somehow not as
socially acceptable as
wearing an aid for slght loss.
You don’t go to a showroom
and pick something that
‘suits you’, and people don’t
complement or admire your
‘aid’ to hearing. They are
‘hidden aids’, as if being
deaf is shameful and should
be concealed.
According to the World
Health Organisation,
disability definition can
be broken down into three
categories: Impairment
(this looks at the physical
appearance of the body),
Activity Limitation (this
deals with the limited
physical movements
or hinderance due to
the impairment), and
restrictions in participation
(this involves the notion
that society has reduced
your involvement in
certain situations because
of your impairment).
Hearing impairment
falls into all the three
categories mentioned
to some degree. Some
organisations define
disability by breaking
down the severity of
the loss. Thus, the exact
disability classification

hearing impairment may
fall under four categories –
profound, severe, moderate
and mild.
Have you any idea how
many people are affected
by hearing loss? In
Portugal, I understand one
in 10 suffer from some
type of hearing loss - and
it’s not just confined to old
age. There are thousands
who suffer from mild
hearing loss, and currently
there are 60,000 people
in Portugal that are deaf
sign language users, and
among that number are
100 working sign language
interpreters.
Hearing loss is a serious
condition that can
sometimes be resolved with
a very simple solution
that greatly improves the
quality of life. Devices are
available in both analogue
and digital forms, and
come in a variety of types,
shapes and sizes – behind
the ear, in the ear, in the
canal and completely-
in-the-ear. Hearing aids
available on SNS tend to
be large in the ear, but
ones from the private
sector are almost invisible,

all-dancing devices with
controls from an app on
your phone – but believe

Wellness devotees are constantly on the lookout for the next holistic cure-all to help
us manage our spiralling sense of unease – and the latest stress-busting buzzword
getting a good deal of hype is ‘adaptogens’.

and roots that lend
themselves to a

thinking called phytotherapy:
where plants are utilised for
their healing abilities.
Herbalists have long
touted adaptogens like
ashwagandha, ginseng,
liquorice root, holy basil and
cordyceps as a way to bolster
the adrenal system, which
is responsible for releasing a
range of hormones into the
body – including cortisol (the
stress hormone linked with
weight gain, disrupted sleep,
and reduced energy levels,
plus bigger problems like
depression and anxiety). Now,
the luxury holistic market is
starting to wake up to the
healing power of these robust
plants.
“Adaptogens usually grow in
very stressful environments
and have had to ‘adapt’ in
order to flourish,” says Naomi
Buff, the health and wellness
guru behind superfood brand
Naomi’s Kitchen. “Maca,
for example, grows at a high
altitude, whereas rhodiola is
found in harsh, mountainous
terrains.
“Their properties of greater
resilience and strength are
transferred to us when we
consume these nutrient-
rich herbs and roots, such
as helping our bodies adapt
to stress, whether it be
physical, mental, emotional or
environmental.”
Natural healing
Naomi, who has created
a very trendy blend of
herbal powders that can
be added to smoothies,
says adaptogens have been
around for millennia, and
were traditionally used for
natural healing in Chinese
and Ayurvedic cultures.
While ancient man would
have foraged for them in the
ground, these days, wellness
junkies have a much easier
job (you can whizz them up
in shakes, take them in tablet
form or glug them on-the-go
in cold-pressed juices and teas;
Gwyneth Paltrow and Donna
Karan are reportedly fans).
Adaptogens come in all shapes
and sizes and promise a host
of different benefits – so how
do you know which one is for
you? Naomi says ginseng is
a universal winner: a blanket
fixer adaptogen that can
lift the spirits and ward off
colds and flu. Ashwaghanda,
meanwhile, is the go-to for
easing anxiety (apparently
it can suppress stimulatory
hormones when you’re strung
out and stressed). Schisandra is
a skin-nourishing woody vine
that’s great in winter; it can
brighten the most lacklustre of
complexions, with, according
to some fans, the added benefit
of helping stave off seasonal
affective disorder. You might
even improve your stamina in
the bedroom with maca, which
Naomi describes as “nature’s
Viagra”.
Health for a New Age
It was during a period of
extreme burnout, four years
ago, that Naomi first tuned
into adaptogens as a way
to treat her own adrenal
fatigue. “At the time, I was
already working in wellness,
teaching nutritional cookery
workshops in Monaco,”
she says. “It wasn’t until my
burnout that I started to
use adaptogens seriously
and regularly. I included
ashwaganda, maca, reishi and
rhodiola in powder form in
my smoothies, and holy basil
in capsules.
“These adaptogens really
helped my recovery and
they’re now a staple in my
diet when I feel exhausted.”
She went on to create
an adaptogen-based
superfood blend called ‘I
Am Superman’, after seeing
“hundreds of women” pass
through her nutritional
cookery workshops and
“constantly hearing them
talk of four common areas of
concern: weight, skin, detox
and energy”.
There’s still limited scientific
evidence around adaptogens,
but a quick scroll through
internet forums shows a cult
following of devotees among
the wellness brigade – namely
praising them for the ability
to restore balance in the body
and mind. It’s also piqued the
attention of Buddha bowl-
loving Instagrammers; the
hashtag #adaptogens has over
18,000 posts on the app.

1. The Roswell Incident:
In 1947, a UFO allegedly
crashed near Roswell, New
Mexico. The U.S. military
initially claimed to have
recovered the wreckage of
a Flying Saucer. However,
the story quickly changed
that the wreck was a
weather balloon, and the
incident has been the
subject of much speculation
and conspiracy theories
since.
2. Gordon Cooper
accounts 1951. An
astronaut and test pilot,
Gordon claimed to have
witnessed a flying saucer
while on a mission in
1951. He described seeing
multiple craft as silver and
circular, flying higher than
he could in a jet fighter.
Cooper also reported seeing
a negative film of a flying
saucer landing on three
telescoping legs.When his
film crew approached, the
vehicle flew off. He sent the
film to D.C. and didn’t hear
anything since.
3. The ICBM Claim:
In 1964, Robert Jacobs,
a U.S. Air Force officer,
claimed to have witnessed
a UFO disabling an
intercontinental ballistic
missile (ICBM) during a
test launch. After the story
broke, Jacobs’ was hassled
repeatedly at his home, and
an explosion destroyed his
mailbox.
4. The Westall UFO
incident: In 1966
Westall, Victoria,
Australia, According to
witness accounts, a large,
unidentified flying object
descended into a nearby
grassy field, where it stayed
for 20 minutes. Students
and a teacher at a nearby
school reported seeing
the craft depart with five
smaller aircraft.
5. The Nuclear Event at
Malmstrom: In 1967,
Robert Salas, a U.S. Air
Force officer, claimed that
a “hovering orange fireball”
at the gate knocked all ten
nuclear missiles offline!
Salas has been holding
a press conference in
Washington every five years
since. Rep Gallagher put
Salas’s account into the
U.S. congressional record
summer of 2022.
6. The Rendlesham
Forest Incident: 1980.
The Rendlesham UFO
event, also known as the
“British Roswell,” refers to
a series of reported UFO
sightings near a U.S./
British military base in
Suffolk, England. One of
the key witnesses to the
UFO
events was John Burroughs,
a U.S. Air Force security
officer. According to his
testimony, he and several
other airmen observed
strange lights in the sky
and even encountered a
glowing, metallic ship on
the ground.
7. The Belgian Wave: In
1989 and 1990, was a series
of mass UFO sightings.
“Three unusual lights”
prompted the launch of 2
F-16 fighters. One hundred
forty-three witnesses spoke
up afterward. Dozens
of police reportedly saw
the objects. Flight radars
recorded the things, but
there was some controversy
because a primary photo
later proved fake.
8. Ariel School - On
September 16, 1994, a
group of students and
teachers at Ariel School in
Ruwa, Zimbabwe, reported
seeing a UFO hovering
over the school grounds.
According to one student,
the UFO was “shaped like
a flattened disc and was
silver in color. It was about
the size of two classrooms
and had a series of red and
green lights around the
edges.” The students made
similar compelling accounts
and haven’t changed their
story in decades!
9. The “Varginha UFO
incident” refers to a
supposed crash of a
Tic-Tac-like vehicle near
Varginha, Brazil, in 1996.
According to eyewitness
accounts, two humanoid
creatures were spotted and
captured by authorities.
One military troop died
from supposedly touching
a being. US C-130 aircraft
allegedly transported the
wreckage and beings.
10. The Phoenix Lights:
on March 13, 1997, a series
of UFO sightings occurred
across Nevada and Arizona.
Over 750 people across
multiple states saw strange
lights in large triangular
formations flying silently
overhead. A self-proclaimed
Air Force maintenance
troop called the local news
that night and said two
F-15s launched from nearby
Luke Air Force Base to
intercept the lights. The
pilots returned shaken and
“scared.” Witnesses said
the flying lights made up a
300-m-long boomerang.
11. Turkey UFO: In the
summers of 2007, 2008,
and 2009, a security guard
Yalcin Yilmaz, filmed
strange lights and what
appeared to be metallic
flying saucers. Roger Lear, a
noted Ufologist, reportedly
saw the saucers with his
own eyes after a UFO
conference in Istanbul,
Turkey. He said you could
“see beings” in the windows.
Yilmaz used a super long-
range zoom lens and filmed
very detailed footage of a
UFO. Some experts claim
it was a misidentified cruise
ship or just a hoax.

12. The Nimitz Incident:
November 2004 The
Modern Smoking Gun.
The Nimitz engagement
made me and many other
people take notice of the
Phenomenon. During
training exercises off the
coast of San Diego, the new
Princeton Radar picked
up strange radar contacts
coming down from space.
They reset the radar, and
the contacts were still
there. After a week of this,
radar operator Kevin Day
vectored new squadron
commander, F-18 Pilot
David Fravor, to identify
the contacts. The pilots
reported engaging with
a “flying Tic-Tac” for
5 minutes. The “white,
smooth object” moved
without inertia and seemed
to interact with the water
surface or a larger object
just under the water. The
Tic-Tac reportedly left “as
if shot like a bullet.”
13. The Gimbal Case: In
2013, a box-orb UFO was
reportedly seen “almost

experts claiming that it was

“Drone Swarm”: Finally, in
2019, there were multiple
UFO drone sightings off
the coast of San Diego,
including an encounter
with the USS Omaha. A
Navy visual team recorded
the drones in optical and
night vision. Some footage
shows the objects going
underwater, although
skeptics argue it is an
apparent optical illusion.

Imagine looking for your baby in a whole crowd of penguins
C
an you imagine
coming back from
a foraging trip and
having to face a
whole crowd of youngsters,
all looking the same? How
do they know their families?
It always fascinates me that
penguins can find their
youngsters in a crowd of
identical young penguins – the
mother or father might have
been away for weeks collecting
food, and when coming back
are faced with thousands of
look-alikes. How do they
know which one is theirs?
After marching up to 125
miles across the sea ice, female
Emperor penguins must
locate their chick among
the thousands of others in
the colony. Unfortunately,
the chicks and their dads do
look exactly the same, and
to find her man and their
chick, she issues a unique
call which her male partner
can identify (this must be
hard when everyone else is
calling out too!). In most
penguin species, including
the Galapagos, parents and
offspring recognize each
using vocalizations and
location. Galapagos penguins
apparently not only find their
own chick but are sometimes
themselves found by their own
fully grown offspring who
have actually fledged and left
the nest but will continue to
pester their parents for food
- and if the bounty of the sea
has been plentiful, the parents

from Oldham, Greater
Manchester in the UK, was
singled out from more than
4,000 entries to claim the
title in the annual compe-
tition.
The judges said they chose
the shot because they were
impressed by Ben’s ability to
capture this rare encounter
with such a shy animal as
Animals
species, it’s not uncommon for
parents carry on feeding their
young after they have fledged,
at least for a limited period of
time.
Where are penguins
found?
Penguins are a strange
species. Classified as a bird,
they cannot fly, and despite
sometimes laying two eggs,
they will discard one and raise
the other (how do they pick
the lucky one?). Everyone
imagines penguins in
Antarctica or taking a break on
a passing iceberg, but penguins
are also found in South Africa,
Chile, Peru, Galápagos Islands,
New Zealand, Australia and
a number of sub-Antarctic
islands. Penguins are very
nearly exclusive to the
southern hemisphere, but
Galapagos penguins live right
on the equator and fledgling
care is only one of several
behaviours that distinguish
them from other penguins.
Many of these peculiarities
make sense when considering
where they live - the
Galapagos Islands straddle the
equator. Thus, they must cope
with extremes of punishing
heat on dry land and relatively
cool ocean waters.
As a result, Galapagos
penguins adjust their
behaviour based on food
availability. They apparently
prioritize moulting, the process
of shedding their old coat of
feathers and replacing it with
a new one. All other penguin

charity invites youngsters
aged 18 years and under to
capture the animal kingdom
on a camera or a mobile
device.
As well as being named
this year’s overall winner at a
ceremony held at the Tower
of London, the hare photo
won the 16 to 18 age group

Ben said: “I’m so happy
that the judges liked my
photo of a mountain hare so
much.

rid of worn, sun-bleached,
algae-covered feathers. Most
other penguin species breed
before moulting, but only
after moulting do Galapagos
penguins breed, and they
can skip a breeding window
entirely or totally abandon
their chicks if food is scarce.
Weirdly, researchers believe
that there are anywhere
from 17 to 21 different types
of penguins, but common
opinion is 19. More research is
needed to determine whether
certain penguin types are
subspecies or species in their
own right.
“Winter at my local
moorland is often cold
and this particular day was
freezing. The winter sun was
out which didn’t help at
all and after walking for
hours I finally spotted this
mountain hare.
“After an hour of steady
approach, I was the closest
I’ve ever been to a moun-
tain hare. The sun was
setting and the mountain
hare was fully relaxed in
my presence, so I was able
to photograph this individ-
ual up close as the sun was
going down.”

about penguins
They have no teeth, but their
mouths and tongues are
lined with spines that point
back towards their throat,
making it easy for them to
swallow prey such as squid,
shrimp and fish. A group
of penguins in the water
is called a raft but on land
they're called a colony, a
rookery or a waddle (with
good reason!) And their
tuxedo-like colouring is
no accident – it’s called
countershading, to help
camouflage themselves from

they have a fat layer that
protects them while in the
sea. On the land however,
their feathers also help to
keep them warm - their
feathers aren't like the large
flat ones that flying birds
have, but are short with an
under-layer of fine woolly
down. And the huddling
you often see has two
purposes, to deter predators,
and in frigid habitats, it
helps them share warmth
and conserve energy.

Common gardening problems
Traps we all fall into
H
ere are some
gardening
hints that
might help if
you struggled with your
garden last year, but don’t
get discouraged, as some
are common challenges that
all gardeners miss at some
point. Sometimes we learn
our lesson the first time,
but sometimes we need
reminding!
Spacing plants appropriately
is something that many
struggle with. When we
start positioning new plants,
it seems like the spacing
recommended is way too
generous. ‘There’s no way
they’ll get that big’ we
think as we plant them in
closer than they should be.
But they will get that big.
And having vegetables in
particular too close together
can cause lower yields,
require more watering, and
make it easy for pests and
disease to spread faster.
If your plants seemed too
crowded last year, take a
ruler with you this year
when you plant.
Planting too early when
you are itching to get your
seeds into the ground.
You’ve bought the seeds,
and they are burning a
hole in your, well, wherever
you keep them. You just
want to start them. Or you

the first lovely weekend of
the year. What can it hurt
to begin planting early?
As it turns out, quite a lot.
Planting too early can result
in spindly plants because
of too little light, they can
be more prone to bolting,
and you’ll also have to
transplant them up in pot
sizes more times, which
sometimes isn’t good for the
plant. Bougainvillea doesn’t
take kindly to being moved
too often is one to look
out for. If you put bedding
plants out too early, they
may not have the right soil
temperatures they need to
establish well.
Weeding is the bane of
every gardener’s life, and
the trick is to get them
under control before they
overwhelm your garden.
There are three secrets to
weed management - start
early, do a little at a time,
and be consistent. If you
start early enough, they
won’t have a chance to
get established. The more
regularly you weed, the
more you’ll keep them
under control. Don’t
attempt to go out and weed
the whole garden in a day.
Pick one bed, or one row,
or one type of plant, or
one patch, and weed for
5-10 minutes a day. You’ll
be surprised how much
weeding you can get done
in 5 minutes.
Watering, too much or too
little, is a balance that can
be hard to achieve. It’s one
of those gardening skills
that takes practice. For
outdoor gardens, this can
sometimes be difficult to
control because we are at
the mercy of the weather.
Check your pots (or plots)
every two days during cool
weather and every day
during hot weather. Feel
the soil with your hand.
If it’s dry 2-3cms down,
you need to water. On
hot days you may need to
water potted plants every
day. Early in the season,
when your plants are still
babies, it’s a good idea to
check the soil every day
since they’re much more
susceptible to water stress.
And even pots collect
weeds, so pull them out
when you find them.
Fertilising is sometimes
something we forget.
Many of the most common
vegetables we grow are

heavy feeders, and they
can deplete the soil of all
its nutrients fast. In the
short term, fertilise your
plants consistently through
the summer, especially
plants like tomatoes
and peppers. In the long
term, enrich your garden
soil with compost if you
can, and consider a crop
rotation routine, so you’re
not growing the same
kind of plant in the same
space and same soil every
year. It’s also very easy to
replace the soil completely
with potted plants, or even
when you dig out an old
plant, make the hole left
behind a little bigger, and
line the hole with fresh
soil.
Plant location matters.
Particularly if your garden
is new to you, make a ‘sun
map’ of your garden, which
will give you an idea of
where you have full sun,
complete or partial shade.
Check your plants’ labels
for location guidance or
check with the staff at the
centre when buying.

At this time of year, socialising is at the top of our agendas, and entertaining at home is
often an appealing option.

owever, some
houses don’t
seem cut out
for entertaining,
particularly if the rooms
are small, cramped and
dark, so you may think
transforming your home into
a social space would need an
expensive revamp that you
just can’t afford.
But you really don’t have
to break the bank to turn
your home into a party
house, promises Christopher
Dance, director and head
designer at InHouse
Inspired Room Design.
“You may think major
renovations are in order
when it comes to making
your home the perfect place
for socialising,” he says. “But
small changes can make a
big difference”.
And Lucy Mather, interiors
expert from the furniture
and décor store Arighi
Bianchi adds: “My advice
for anyone looking to create
the wow factor this festive
season is to think about the
overall look you want to
achieve and stick with the
theme. So if that’s a slick
and sophisticated cocktail
party, then think about the
key pieces that will help you
get the look in your home.”
Here are some of the best
ways to turn your home
into a party palace, without
spending a fortune…
Look at the layout
For small get-togethers,
Dance suggests hosts
arrange sofas and armchairs
to face each other so no-
one’s left out. “If you’re
planning a large party, you
may prefer to move the
seating to the side so your
guests can chat standing up,
yet still have the option to sit
down if needed,” he says.
If you need extra seating
in a small space, why not
buy – or borrow – a few
comfortable and budget-
friendly floor cushions, he
suggests.
Create ambience
through the right
lighting
Dance says the type of
lighting you need for
socialising at home will
depend on the type of
gathering you’re hosting.
“You should consider how to
create an inviting ambience
for your guests, which is
where lighting comes in,”
he says.
So if you’re serving food,
you’ll need adequate light
to allow people to see
what they’re eating, but for
more intimate and casual
gatherings, warm and cosy
lighting will go down well,
especially on dark, chilly
evenings, says Dance. “Opt
for warm, low-level mood
lighting rather than large
and cold overhead lights,”
he advises, “and make use
of the dimmer switch if you
have one. If you don’t, try
illuminating with lamps
rather than a single main
light source.”
Change the
atmosphere through
colour
Different colours can
introduce different feelings
into the room and can really
change the atmosphere,
says Dance. “Try out paint
swatches or make digital
mock-ups to see what
everything will look like,” he
suggests. “Reds and oranges

Re: Wages
EDITOR , The old minimum salary was not €706.. but
17% higher. Companies have to pay €5 per day for food and
another €1 per day for transportation that goes to the worker
and then another 33% for taxes, Social Security and Un-
employment insurance it usually added up to almost €1000.
Then pay 14 months for 11 worked.
The Federal minimum salary in the US is $7.25 GROSS..
not net like in Portugal.. and no free SNS and no 14 months
and 1 month vacation. We raise the minimum salary 7% ..
well suppliers prices with go up 10% … and ours 10% to
break even.. yes I do have a business in the Algarve and yes
my employees (7) do get about 2xs the minimum salary.. but
50% is in commissions and bonuses.. which most people do
not want… most want guaranteed salaries.. well guaranteed
salaries are in the PUBLIC SECTOR..

tyranny. As soon as governments create centralised digital
currency, they will be able to control what you spend your
money on.
A China style social credit system will take us to the edge

EDITOR, Folks who use their cards instead of cash are losing
out on the value of their money, the bank takes a nibble every time
they use their card. On average in food supermarkets the bank
earns 300 euros plus per year from your account in charges for
your stupidity of using your card for everything.

EDITOR, I agree with most of the comments previous
especially about signing over accounts digitally. 7 years ago Bank
of America transferred $10,000 out of my checking account
because I had overdraft protection and they made a mistake. I
watch what I have and caught it and it reappeared 5 days later
after phone calls to the bank and their apology; I was a wreck lol.
Since though I have 3 Air Miles credit cards all on Direct With-
drawal from my account and they automatically pay the entire
card charges at the end of the month, keeps my credit score high
and I like that. No one charges me for the use of my 2 Visas and
1 Master Card; the business has to pay the 2% so Guida (whose
thoughtful posts I always enjoy) why are you paying $ using your
cards? Is the process different there? I come once or twice a year,
charge everything to get Air Miles and I never get charged by my
bank. Why is it different for you and what am I missing? Thanks

EDITOR, And what about funds for public health
hospitals? Seriously underfunded and understaffed.
Buildings in need of care. Sorely in need of being
able to effectively take in elderly via ER. I’ve seen them
stacked up a rather small triage area with gurneys stacked
like angled parking. Elderly Portuguese people and not
enough ER staff to tend to their basic needs nor rooms
available to admit them. More saddening than words can
express.
