If you are new to camping, the choice
of tent can be bewildering. However, it
may help you to know that nowadays
the most popular type of unit for the
family holidays and weekends is,
unquestionably, the frame tent.
A frame tent is so called because it
consists of a tubular, free-standing
sectional framework. Once assembled,
an outer canvas of proofed cotton is
placed over the frame and a completely
separate inner tent (or bedroom) is
hung from the inside. The inner tent
has a built-in waterproof groundsheet,
four walls and roof, as well as zipped
doors.
Erection of a Lamont frame tent has
never been a puzzle as many of the
frame sections have been spring linked.
Now, however, with the introduction of
the 'Armatic frame (see facing page) it

If your perception of camping is
coloured by childhood memories,
chances are, when you think of a tent,
you conjure up a mental picture of a
ridge tent.
To the uninitiated, the design of the
ridge tent seems to have remained
unaltered for years but, in fact, nothing
could be further from the truth. Gone
are the days of the single skin,

All the sections in these parts are pre-
joined to the patented 'Armatic'
corner sections so you can hardly
go wrong.
The 'Armatic' frame is also more
compact and lighter and this means
less space and weight in the car.
Generally speaking, after a trial run at
home on the lawn, by following the
simple instructions, a medium sized
frame tent should take even a beginner
no more than 30 minutes to erect. It is
self-evident that, when choosing your
tent, the size of your family will be an
important influencing factor. Few
people are tempted to buy too large a
tent, but many regret buying one that's
too small. After all, your tent will be
used for more than just sleeping. You

keeping the weight to a minimum.
The most important development of
recent years is the use of nylon instead
of cotton canvas. Cotton still remains
the best material for a tent if weight is
not important because it has the ability
to breathe even when proofed. Cotton
also has a longer life than man-made

are four people in your family, you
should consider a five or even six berth
tent. As a guide, throughout this
brochure you will see that all tent plans
show sleeping accommodation to help
you assess the options open to you.
The added luxury of a separate kitchen
annex, built-in wardrobes, more than
one bedroom, zipped panels. extra
doors and extra windows all contribute
considerably to the whole family's
enjoyment of a camping holiday. But, if
your budget is limited, our advice is to
make space your first priority.
Frame tents, being so compact, are
easy to store away when not in use.
More inportantly, with reasonable care,
a frame tent can provide the family's
holiday home for 10 years or more.

The very clever arrangement of two
separate bedrooms of the Barbados

Fast and simple to erect the trailer
unfolds to left and right to give a
raised double bedroom with firm base

Coleman Camping Railer
An entirely new concept in luxury
camping from the U.S.A., the camping
trailer has all the comfort and luxury of
a touring caravan but with the ease and
convenience of a trailer tent as far as
towing and storage is concerned.
Manufactured by Coleman
International of America, these trailers
were intoduced into this country by
Caseys in 1980 and proved an
immediate success. Now, for 1981 the
manufacturers have produced the
'Cruiser' specifically designed to meet
the needs of the European camper.
As may be seen from the illustrations,
the erection of a 'Cruiser' is simplicity
itself—the hard-top roof and heavy
duty canvas walls of the main cabin go
up automatically by merely turning a
winding handle!. The sleeping
extensions at either end then slide out
and the only framework to erect is the
supporting bars beneath the
bedrooms. No pegging or guying is
required!

HOW A PORTA POTTI WORKS.

Porta Potti consists of a fresh water tank and a waste
holding compartment. The two parts are separated
by an odour tight valve mechanism. A hand operated
pump delivers a fresh water flush for each use
keeping the bowl of the toilet hygenic and fresh as in
normal home toilet.

A deluxe awning with a distinctive oval window set into each of
the two front door panels. This model has many features. In
green cotton canvas with a sand roof, the Corvette has sloping
side walls each with a clear PVC window and attractive curtains in
harmonising colours.
An extra side doorway is fitted to the left hand side wall for easy

C. POULARD PORCH
An extremely popular new alternative to a full size caravan awning
the Poulard Porch is 4'11" x 4'11" and styled in green and sand
canvas with an easy erected aluminium alloy frame. The clear
PVC front window incorporates a net ventilator and zipped blind.

 Harrison 'Drive Away' Tents
These annex tents for motorised caravans or estate/hatchback cars not only provide extra living room or sleeping accommodation
but are free standing and easily detachable from the vehicle enabling your site to be reserved when the vehicle is required for outings.
Manufactured from top quality cotton canvas, the tent has three clear P.V.C. windows at the front with detachable curtains. A double
zipped panel at the rear can be rolled up allowing access between tent and vehicle and both sides also have double zipped panels
which can be rolled up or pegged out to form a sun canopy. Alternatively a 'Sleeper' annex can be added as illustrated (See Optional

Many people are pleasantly surprised

modem living they can enjoy when
they go camping. Air mattresses,

can be zipped together to make a
double (see page 37).
Camp beds are still sold but box sided
air mattresses are far more comfortable
and warmer. They store away taking
little room and, as they can be walked
on, do not restrict tent space.
(See pages 38-39) There's even a 12
volt electric pump if you want your
airbed to inflate automatically.
Camping furniture is specially designed
to fold compactly, and stools, chairs
and armchairs are also designed to
give greater comfort over longer
periods than, for example, the typical
garden spring back chair. Remember,
chairs or stools will also be used at
table. When choosing a table, buy one
as large as possible - they all fold flat.
(See pages 46-47). Camping furniture
serves equally well as garden furniture,
of course.
The 12 volt fluorescent light is today's
answer to tent illumination. No running
costs, no fire risk, noiseless and
compact, it is hardly any drain on a car
battery. It is also cheaper than a gas
lantern. Campers with a large tent often
use two at the same time - one in the
living room,and one in the kitchen.
A torch or battery lantern for emergency
or just lighting the way home is a good
idea. And for small children who like
their own little light on hand in the
bedrooms (see page 44).
As for cooking, most campers go
straight for the cooker that has two
burners and a grill. The performance
and ease of operation with bottled
butane gas - particularly Camping Gaz
- is on a par with your home cooker.
For the individual or ridge tent camper,
the single burner using gas cartridges
has mainly replaced paraffin stoves
(see pages 40-41).
For stability, storage and correct
working height, a 'Beanstalk' or kitchen
unit is thoroughly recommended for
the larger cooker in a family frame tent
(see pages 42-43). „mak

You don't have to eat exclusively out of
tins either. Ice boxes are in constant
use these days to keep perishables
fresh. Abroad, blocks of ice are
generally available daily at camp sites.
But, in the U.K., the cooling agent is a
re-usable chemical pack which can be
refrozen in the camp shop freezer. Or
choose an 'easi-cool' box - an ice box
that keeps its 'cool' by the simple
evaporation of ordinary water. You'll
find them in our catalogue as well
(see page 45).
There are also many small items of
equipment that will prove invaluable on
a camping holiday. Tent tidy, coat
hooks, clip ashtrays, mirrors and drying
racks are just a few of the accessories
worthwhile considering for a relatively
small outlay (see page 53).
A compact, lightweight wash bowl/
drainer stand is also worthy of attention
as is the roll-up water carrier or fold-a-
jug as an auxillary to a rigid sided water
carrier (see page 45).
Canteens - nesting pots and pans -
have always been popular with family
campers but now its all non-stick and
so much easier. There's nothing wrong
in taking your saucepans from
home, of course, but they
are space consuming and
difficult to pack away.

Unless your car is chock full of heavy-
weight wrestlers, it should be quite
capable of carrying the weight of the
average frame tent and equipment as
well. The problem, however, is usually
space, not weight. And this is when the
roof rack comes to the rescue (See
page 49).
Car manufacturers recommend a
maximum weight of about 100Ibs on a
gutter mounted roof rack, generally
more than sufficient if you pack the
heaviest items, such as your tent and
personal luggage, in the car boot.
You may, of course, decide to increase
your carrying capacity with a luggage
trailer - now becoming increasingly
popular. A little more expensive than a
rack, but if you have a big family and a
small car, it does place less strain on
the springs and prevents overloading.
