Filling Spaces - 1

1 Filling Spaces method is used to solve many Permutations and Combination questions.

The following steps need to be followed:

1.Visualize the number of spaces to be filled.
2.Note the number of entities available.
3.For each space, understand the number of entities available.
4.Computer the final answer.
For example:
In how many ways can three boys be seated in 2 chairs?
1. Number of spaces = 2
2. Number of entities = 3
3. Number of entities for each space
a) Space 1 = 3
b) Space 2 = 2 (since 1 boy has been seated, 3 – 1 = 2)
c) Space 3 = 1 (since 2 boys have been seated, 3 – 2 = 1)
4.Total number of ways = 3 x 2 x 1 = 6
