During Friday, October 13, 2023, an important socialisation event of the Community
Mental Health was carried out. This activity was organised by the Chamber of Deputies,
the Bolivian Psychiatric Society, the Wawaspaq Community Mental Health Program, CBM
Global, and the NGO Ayninakuna.
During the day, representatives from the respective entities in the area analysed the
different chapters, which were discussed at tables with the aim of contributing, reaching a
consensus to improve the Mental Health Law. The law's focus on rights and community
prioritises addressing the promotion, prevention, rehabilitation, and restoration with quality,
of the mental health, disorder, or illness of all individuals.
For this purpose, the Bill emphasises timely care at the various levels of the healthcare
system in Bolivia, starting from the primary healthcare level. This is because frontline
professionals will have the knowledge to identify psychosocial risks and mental
pathologies in the population on time, using different specific tools, in order to provide a
relevant, accessible, and timely intervention.
The day concluded by compiling the contributions and adjustments generously provided by
various national authorities, representatives from the Health Departments (SEDES) of the
9 departments, civil organisations, universities, organisations representing individuals with
psychosocial, mental, intellectual, and cognitive disabilities, as well as national and
international cooperation. Everyone is committed to mental health to continue to support
the legal processes that the bill will go through until its promulgation, regulation, and
enforcement, to ensure the mental health and overall well-being of all Bolivians.
The NGO AYNINAKUNA, with support from CBM GLOBAL in coordination with the Pan
American Health Organization (PAHO), conducted mhGAP facilitator training through the
Wawaspaq Community Mental Health Program. This training involves 45 professionals,
including short-term healthcare personnel, authorities, and the national Wawaspaq
program team. The event took place from September 12th to 15th in La Paz. Likewise,
complementary topics were facilitated, such as attention to violence and human rights,
presented by PAHO advisors from the Washington office. Professionals will complete the
training with the commitment to replicate the tool in their care services.

The primary( ELEMENTARY) -level students of this school presented their sociodramas,
such as "The Forest of Friendship," "An Encounter at Recess," "Respect for Differences,"
"Living in Violence," "The Value of the Heart," "Decree to Be Happy," among other themes.
These presentations were part of the school violence prevention program. The children
presented a total of 12 plays adapted to the theme of violence, which they are often
familiar with. The plays emphasised messages that promote the values and principles of
good treatment, encouraging respect among peers.
The performances presented at the festival are the result of the training, information, and
awareness-raising on good treatment, which has been conducted throughout the
academic year in partnership with the school through the WAWASPAQ Community Mental
Health Program. During this time, the children demonstrated their knowledge and
commitment to the prevention of any form of violence within the school.
The Wawaspaq Community Mental Health Program of the NGO Ayninakuna, financed by
CBM Global, held the last psychosocial intervention session with the students of the
Sagrada Familia school this past day. This activity was designed with the purpose of
carrying out a psychosocial intervention aimed at improving emotional behaviour, reducing
hyperactivity, fostering the development of social skills, promoting the recognition of
emotions, and personal care for children, while considering their context analysis.
Throughout the academic year, a total of eight sessions were held. In these sessions,
actions were developed aimed at implementing support to children facing situations of risk,
and identifying the specific needs of each child for timely intervention.
The provisional delivery of 10 houses and home gardens was carried out through the
Community-Based Rehabilitation project in Poroma. This complementary community
development project was implemented with the aim of providing the neediest families a
safe haven and access to healthy food to improve the nutrition of children with disabilities
who have limited access to a variety of foods, thereby preventing malnutrition.
The delivery ceremony was attended by the main authorities, including Mr. Felipe Mamani
Villca, the mayor of the municipality of Poroma, and the entire council, alongside other
authorities. (Mr. Felipe Mamaní Villca, the Mayor of the municipality of Poroma, and
the entire council, along with other officials, were among the main authorities
present at the delivery ceremony.) They expressed their gratitude to KNH Kinder Not
Hilfe and to the NGO Ayninakuna for their work in support of people with disabilities and
their families, who are located in remote areas far from the town centre of the municipality
of Poroma.

SUCRE, June 3, 2023 – World Clubfoot Varus Day is June 3. It is a day to raise
awareness about clubfoot, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and an
opportunity to emphasise the importance of early detection, referral, and timely treatment.
Furthermore, this day celebrates the successes of those who have received and provided
treatment.
Clubfoot is one of the most common congenital defects and one of the leading causes of
physical disability worldwide. Most cases are diagnosed at birth and occur in otherwise
healthy infants. Clubfoot is easily identifiable by the inward and upward turning of the feet.
If it is left untreated, this disability could make walking extremely difficult and painful.
However, the position of their feet is the only medical barrier preventing the majority of
children with Clubfoot from living productive and fully functional lives.
Currently, there are 9.8 million people who were born with Clubfoot, and out of those, 7.8
million live with a disability due to the lack of access to proper treatment. Annually,
approximately 200 000 children (or 1 in every 700 births) worldwide are born with Clubfoot.
With appropriate treatment, over 95% can achieve complete correction and mobility.
Without treatment, children live with a severe disability and endure a lifetime of negative
health, societal, and economic consequences.
Clubfoot is correctable with the Ponseti method - an innovative and highly effective
medical intervention that results in complete correction of clubfoot, and full functionality in
nearly all cases. The treatment involves a series of weekly castings to gently reposition the
feet and a simple outpatient procedure to release the Achilles tendon, followed by the use
of an abduction brace for the foot, worn during sleep for 4-5 years to maintain correction
and reduce the risk of relapse. When it is initiated during infancy, the foot position is
typically corrected in six to eight weeks.

During the past week, the Community-Based Rehabilitation Project in the Municipality of
Poroma, implemented by the NGO Ayninakuna, received a monitoring visit from the
funding organisation Kindernothilfe - KNH Bolivia and Germany.
The agenda was successfully fulfilled, starting with an informative meeting with the
authorities responsible for the rights of the entire municipality, who are members of the
interinstitutional network for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in Poroma.
Mayor Felipe Mamani highlighted and expressed gratitude for all the support that
the Municipality receives to "assist this vulnerable population that, as authorities,
we often don't know how to address their needs, but now with the Community-
Based Rehabilitation project in Poroma, we understand our responsibilities.
Therefore, I called for continued collaboration towards the real inclusion of our
brothers and sisters with disabilities."
Words of appreciation from Mr. Felipe Mamani Villca, municipal mayor of Poroma.
Field visits to families with children and teenagers with disabilities, along with the progress
achieved in providing them with basic home-based rehabilitation knowledge, improving
their nutrition, and ensuring accessibility and safety in their homes, contribute to the
comprehensive development of all family members. These measures also serve as a
direct way to prevent developmental delays, deficiencies, and disabilities. The
complementary community development project, through the construction of family
gardens, helps them value the importance of good nutrition and generate economic
resources for other needs. The improvements in their homes provide security and greater
stability.
In addition, productive ventures with teenagers and young people with disabilities, who
have received significant support from the CBR project have been visited, as there are few
opportunities for them in the municipality. Within this context, some innovative initiatives
have been generated that are currently in operation and in the process of strengthening
with promising projections.

From the NGO AYNINAKUNA, we are extremely grateful to KINDERNOTHILFE - KNH
Bolivia and Germany for the opportunity and trust in implementing the CBR project in the
Municipality of Poroma. We reiterate our institutional commitment to continue working with
dedication under the principles of the rights-based approach for children and teenagers
with disabilities.

As we approach the end of the fiscal year, I want to express my gratitude for all the hard
work and dedication that has brought us this far. In March, we reached 1,243 new
patients, 100.5% of our annual target to date. This is a testament to the tireless efforts
of our 39 partners in the 36 countries we support. Your commitment to providing high-
quality treatment for Clubfoot and integrating it into public health systems is making a
profound difference in the lives of children born with this condition.
I have confidence that with our model of local partnership, strong systems and tools, and
the unwavering commitment of parents and providers, we will achieve our goal of 12,810
for this fiscal year. The success of your collaboration with the Ministries of Health and
other strategic allies in designing and implementing the program has been instrumental to
our achievements. Through national and regional training, clinic visits, community outreach
campaigns, parent engagement, supportive supervision, home visits, and the
establishment of new clinics and partnerships, you have made significant strides in
deepening the impact of our collective work.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to reaching at least 70% of children born with
Clubfoot in the early months of life, while expanding our innovations to achieve effective
early detection and integrated referral pathways within community-led engagement
initiatives driven by partners. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to this vital work.
Together, we can continue to change the lives of children born with Clubfoot.

The Clubfoot program in Uganda is expanding its reach by forming strategic partnerships
to help more children. Makerere University - Johns Hopkins (MU-JHU) has been
conducting a congenital defects surveillance program and referring cases to one of the
hospitals we support in Uganda. Under the guidance of Salimah Walani, MiracleFeet
Global Advisor, and the leadership of our CEO, Daphne Sorensen, and Director of
Programs, Emmanuel Otoo, a meeting was held with MU-JHU to collaborate more closely
on the Uganda integration roadmap and in the implementation of the national Clubfoot
program. MU-JHU has agreed to host a consultant who will support the performance of the
final roadmap in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. This is just one of the efforts
underway to develop national roadmaps, with similar initiatives in progress in Madagascar
and the Philippines.
Tanzania
The Tanzania Clubfoot Care Organization (TCCO) is dedicated to reaching children born
with Clubfoot everywhere, and is working on creating a clubfoot support clinic in the Nduta
