At the end of this Learning episode, I must be able to:
 Cite the personal qualities of an effective teacher.
 State the professional competencies expected of a teacher.
Guide Questions
1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the TEDx
videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess?
Based on my personal intellectual capacity there competencies that a great teacher
must possess. It is really imperative that to know about the competencies that are required
to be able to teach among ASEAN countries. Chiefly knowing and understanding what to
teach which basically means of self- reliance being able to deepen and broaden the
knowledge and what to teach especially with the educational trends, policies, curricula.
Always updated with all the changes from the local, national, towards the international and
even global development. Second, is the ability to help students to learn which
encompasses to know, be acquainted and understand the characteristics of the students to
effectively create any means and ways for them to easily comprehend any kinds of lessons
for every students are different in all forms. Utilizing the most efficient and effective ways
and methods of teachings to quickly assist the students learning. Third one is the engaging
the community or these other what so we called as stakeholders, the parents and the
community that will basically help the students to learn and encourage respect and
embrace diversity and value real-world learning. Last on the list is becoming a better
teacher where it deals with knowing oneself and the others that basically who has the
passion to practice human goodness and of course utilizing the teaching practice,
encourage students to be in school while developing their learning, skills and abilities..
These four major competences are what it takes to be a great teacher.
2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies?
No, it will never end in the four corners of the classroom but it is being able to live
with it and ability to promulgate it to the world. It is the application of the competencies
outside the school premises and vicinities; this will help them in guiding while taking the
right path of life.
3. For a teacher to be great is it enough to possess the professional competencies to
plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning, compute and
report grades? Explain your answer.
I believe that it is not enough to be a great teacher by just possessing the
professional competencies because what is the essence of having and acquiring the
intellectual capabilities if you really don’t have the ability to connect and touch people’s
lives. A true great teacher is encompasses with both heart and mind. A mind to cure
ignorance and share personal experiences and a heart that is full of compassion towards
his students, its ability to illuminate the lives of many and inspire people to learn, read and
write.
4. For a teacher to be great, which are more important-personal qualities or
professional competencies?
I believed it would be the professional competencies that weigh more in becoming a
great teacher because chiefly it is our responsibility to learn everything what life teaches
us. It is our responsibility on how to ride and fight the havoc of life, learning all those lapses
that perpetuated as holistically and lead us to where we are right now. But competing the
world without knowledge is just like flying without wings, eating without digesting because
how are we going to compete in the world if we really don’t know anything. Luck isn’t
always there, so we must not rely on luck. Learn how to stand on your own foot learn to
labor and to wait. We need someone who will sprinkle us water and germinate us in the
right pot and with a right fertilizer and a right amount of sunshine then definitely we will
all grow.
5. Who are the teachers that we remember most?
Believe me or not what makes me remember teachers the most is not the best one
but someone who looked at me down, the worst one. They are one of those reasons why I
strive so much with my studies, it makes me fueled to do much better every time I
remember their faces and that poor situation. I really wanted to prove to them that I am
more than what they think about me. That I am more than of those unethical words directly
heating my naïve mind and broke my fragile heart. They say that external scars may be
healed but internal scars will always haunts and will remain forever for scars are but
evidence of life as what Marcia Lynn believes.

Self-Learning Activity
A.
Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need improvement in?
There are so many personal traits I do possess but what really loves the most is my
ability to compose myself. Even if the world seems upside-down and contradicting I will
still able to hold my temper and remain at its finest. I know myself way better than anyone
I don’t have to waste my precious time when things that will not perpetuate me, I am
always busy building empire from within. What I really need to develop to the sense of
voluntarism lending my hands to those who really in needs. Carried out with the free will of
citizens that aimed at providing selfless socially important services towards the welfare of
everybody. Because life is just congruent to voluntarism either you participate or watch.
Which professional competencies am I strongly capable of demonstrating?
I firmly believe it would be my leadership skills that I am strongly capable of
demonstrating. I am someone who possesses the ability to transform, influence and touch
the lives of many. I will help them and encourage following those dreams no matter what
those dreams are. I am someone who knows how to ignite the flame from within of a
certain person. I have the burning passion to serve and cater humanity who leads and
create path. Transforming nobody to somebody by means of honing and carving the very
potential. And think that is one of the best things a teacher must acquire.
In which competencies do I need to develop more?
I think it would be internal being that I need to develop more. How can I be that
effective if I myself still weak and vulnerable. It takes time building empire from within. It
is not about being selfish but rather preparing me in any certainties may come along way. It
is about self- nourishment and self-building. Then I’ll be able to step in a global perspective
and I can follow the global trend of teaching. Then at the end of the day it is I will be an
effective that is full of life-laden principles ready to take the path of teaching.
Who are teachers that we remember most?
Those are people who make my high school life even more colorful and worthy to
keep. A teacher who also teaches life lessons and life principles that definitely left a special
place in my heart. A teacher who loves to call his students “nak” as a way of showing
affection and love towards his students. Someone who aims the betterment of the whole
section and wishes that we will be soon successful. Someone who is capable of opening our
hearts as well as our minds.

to make time to response each students and professional competencies like
classroom management were least/not displayed and as a result, students

leads to conflicts between students to students creating commotions that would
trigger the atmosphere of the class.

REFLECTION
To my surprise, after I completed the first episode of this lesson, I
discovered that each teacher had a unique way of motivating their students. The
motivation of a student’s learning and development is vital to his or her success. Because
teachers spend more time than most parents on shaping and helping their children’s
holistic development, a teacher’s role in deciding a child success is crucial. In addition, I
understand that we must have both professional and personal traits in order to be a
great teacher. I learned a lot and gained a better grasp of what it takes to be a great
teacher from this episode. I’m able to see things more clearly and from a different
viewpoint as a result of this. A new perspective on how to be a great and effective teacher
has emerged. At first, I assumed that if you’re well-versed in the subject, you’d already be
a good teacher. I do, however, come to a lot of conclusions as I go through this episode.
Not only does a great teacher do an excellent job of educating and transmitting
knowledge, but they also have a positive impact on their students’ life.

As a prospective teacher, it is imperative for me to determine the best teaching

strategy for my students in order for them to gain the knowledge and skills they need to
succeed. I also need to establish a positive relationship with them so that my presence
does not make them feel intimidated, but rather motivates them to work harder to
achieve objectives. Both professional and personal qualities are required in the sphere of
teaching and learning. In order to assist learners in having meaningful and life-long
learnings, I must uphold these two.
