Fundamental unit of life

What is a cell?
The cells can be defined as the basic unit of life.
It is the structural and functional unit of all living organisms

Difference between atom, moleuclue, cell.

Atom - Smallest part of a substance that cannot be broken down chemically.
Molecule - If 2 or more atoms bond chemically, it forms a molecule.
Cell - Made of different types of organic molecules and substances.

Why do we call a cell as basic unit?

It is the smallest living entity that can independently exist.
A cell is referred to as the smallest, basic unit of life that plays an important
role for all the life's processes(like growth, repair, produce energy, utilise
food)

History of the cell

1665 - Robert hooke

Discovery of cell by the observation of dead cork cells under a microscope.
1674 - Anton Leeuwenhoek
Observed living cells for the first time. (looked into clothes under his own
microscope then looked into pond water)
Robert brown - Nucleus
Purkinje - conined protoplasm

Cell theory -
Matthias Schleiden-
Cells are the basic unit of plant structure.
*All living organisms are made up of cells or the products of cells
Theodor Schwann -
Cells are the basic unit of animal structure
*Cells are the fundamental building blocks of tissues, organs and entire
functioning organisms
Rudolph vichow -
*All cells arise from pre-existing cells

* Cell is the basic structural unit of life

* Cell is the basic functional unit of life
* Cells arise from pre-existing cells
* All organisms are made of cells

Shapes of cells
Elongated cells(Neurons)- transmission of impulses/electrical signals
Biconcave(RBCs) - Maximum Accomodation, efficient transport of maximum oxygen
Spindle shaped(smooth muscles) - Contractionns and relaxing
Plygonal(liver)
Different cells have various shapes to carry out diff. funtions efficiently.
