Obtain the formula for the electric field due to a long thin wire of uniform linear charge
density without using Gauss,s law.
2. Two charges, one + 5C and another - 5μC are placed 1 mm apart. Calculate the dipole
moment. [Ans. 5 x 10-9 Cm]
3. An electric dipole when held at 30o with respect to a uniform electric field of 104 NC-1
experiences a torque of 9 x 10-26 Nm. Calculate dipole moment of the dipole.
[Ans. 1.8 x 10-29 cm]
4. Two charges + − are placed 5.00 mm apart. Determine the electric field at a point P on
the axis of the dipole 15 cm away from its centre O on the side of the positive charge, (b) a point
Q 15 cm away from O on a line passing through O and normal t the axis of the dipole.
[Ans. (a) 2.66 x 105 NC1 , along (b) 1.33 x 105 NC-1 , along ]
5. The electric field component in Fig. Are Ex = a x1/2 , Ey = Ez = 0, in which = 800 N / Cm2.
Calculate (i) the flux through the cube and (ii) the charge within the cube. Assume that a =
0.1 m.
[Ans. (i) + 1.57 Nm2 C-1 (ii) 0 (iii) 3.14 Nm2 C-1 (iv) 2.78 x 10-11 C]
