Obtain the formula for the electric field due to a long thin wire of uniform linear charge
density � without using Gauss,s law.
2. Two charges, one + 5�C and another - 5μC are placed 1 mm apart. Calculate the dipole
moment. [Ans. 5 x 10-9 Cm]
3. An electric dipole when held at 30o with respect to a uniform electric field of 104 NC-1
experiences a torque of 9 x 10-26 Nm. Calculate dipole moment of the dipole.
[Ans. 1.8 x 10-29 cm]
4. Two charges + − �� �� are placed 5.00 mm apart. Determine the electric field at a point P on
the axis of the dipole 15 cm away from its centre O on the side of the positive charge, (b) a point
Q 15 cm away from O on a line passing through O and normal t the axis of the dipole.

5. The electric field component in Fig. Are Ex = a x1/2 , Ey = Ez = 0, in which � = 800 N / Cm2.
Calculate (i) the flux �� through the cube and (ii) the charge within the cube. Assume that a =
0.1 m.

6. An electric field is uniform , and in the positive x direction for positive x and uniform with
the same magnitude in the negative x direction for negative x. It is given that

A right circular cylinder of length 20 cm and radius 5 cm has its centre at the origin and its axis
along the x-axis so that one face is at x = +10 cm and the other is at x = -10 cm.
(i) What is the net outward flux through each flat face ?
(ii) What is the flux through the side of the cylinder ?
(iii) What is the net outward flux through the cylinder ?
(iv) What is the net charge inside the cylinder ?

7. Given a uniform electric field � = 5 x 103 � NC-1 , find the flux of this field through a square of
10 cm on a side whose plane is parallel to the Y-Z plane. What would be the flux through the
same square if the plane makes a 30o angle with the X-axis ? [Ans. (i) 50 Nm2C-1 (ii) 25 Nm2C-1]
8. A point charge of 17.7 �C is located at the centre of a cube side 0.03 . Find the electric flux
through each face of the cube. [Ans. 3.3 x 105 Nm2C-1 ]
9. A spherical Gaussian surface encloses a charge of 8.85 x 10-8 C. (i) Calculate the electric flux
passing through the surface. (ii) If the radius of the Gaussian surface is doubled, how would
the flux change ? [Ans. (i) 104 Nm2C-1 (ii) No change]

10. The electric field in a region is given by � = �� � . Find the charge contained in the cubical

11. If � = 6� + 3� + 4� , calculate the electric flux through a surface of area 20 units in Y-Z plane.
[Ans. 120 units]
12. A circular plane sheet of radius 10 cm is placed in a uniform electric field of 5 x 105 NC-1 ,
making an angle of 60o with the field. Calculate electric flux through the sheet.
[Ans. 1.36 x 104 Nm2C-1]
