EFFECT OF ONLINE GAMING ADDICTION ON THE ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 12 SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS

CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Online gaming addiction is becoming a growing problem among young

people, particularly senior high school students. With the rise of technology and

the proliferation of online games, more and more students are getting hooked to

these games, spending countless hours playing them and neglecting their

studies. Online gaming addiction can have a number of negative effects on a

student's academic performance. For one, it can lead to poor time management

skills, as students spend too much time playing games and not enough time

studying or completing their assignments. It is important to understand the effects

of online gaming addiction on senior high school students' academic

performance and overall well-being. Through research, we can identify the

factors that contribute to this addiction, and develop strategies to help students

overcome it and achieve success in their academic pursuits.

Nowadays, students spend too much time on online games.

Inappropriate use of online games leads to problems such as distraction and

addiction. Internet games addiction is characterized by cognitive and emotional

deficits. Online addiction involves playing games uncontrollably for many hours.

Students use online games to relieve them of their stresses but the excessive

use of online games may lead to worsened learning ability, concentration

problems, poor academic performance and decreased interactions with other


people.

It is already suspicious that the game of online games can not give anyone

can give. According to the study, the human brain is easy to destroy and one of

the reasons use technology. The training system tends to go with streams with

this constant social change to be related to all generations today. In an online

game, the darkness of the game has been a matter of argument to the school

and is generally a general educational department. Therefore, this study is

conducted to determine the association of the game in an online game for

academic efficiency students

This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the relationship between online

game addiction and academic performance among senior high school students

at M’lang National High School. This study will provide insights into the scope

and impact of the problem and inform the development of targeted interventions.

Ultimately, the findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of

the complex interplay between online game addiction and academic performance

and help identify strategies to mitigate its negative impact.


HYPOTHESIS

-There is a significant negative correlation between the amount of time senior

high school students spend on online gaming and their academic performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The general objectives of the study is to find the effect of online games in

academic performance of Senior High students in M’lang National high school.

the study will collect information to the following questions:

1. What are the online games where Grade 12 students addicted to?

2. What are the effect of online gaming addiction to the academic performance

of students?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the effect of OGA to the academic

performance of Grade 12 SHS students?


OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study was to find out the impact of online gaming

addiction on the study habits and academic performance of senior high students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study aims to determine the effect of playing online games addiction to

the academic performance of senior high students in M’lang National High

school. The result of this study will benefited the following:

Students- This study will help create awareness among senior high school

students about the negative impacts of excessive online gaming. It will motivate

them to become more responsible in managing their time and energy for gaming

and academic activities.

Parents-Parents will gain insights into the effects of excessive online gaming

on academic performance and the associated risks. The study will empower

parents to create better schedules and strategies to help their children balance

their online gaming activities and academic requirements.

This can lead to an overall improvement in the academic performance of the

students.
Teachers- The study will provide teachers with a better understanding of the

risks and consequences of online gaming addictions. With this information,

teachers can devise and implement strategies that can keep students from

neglecting their academic responsibilities. The findings of the study can help

teachers identify students who are at risk of addiction and offer early

interventions that will help prevent the addiction from escalating and harming

their academic performance.

Future researchers- This study can serve as a reference point for future

research on the effects of online gaming on academic performance, including

investigating the psychological and social effects of gaming addiction on

students. The study's findings will contribute to the existing body of research

knowledge on the subject, paving the way for further research on this critical

issue.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The research aims to investigate the impact of online game addiction on the

academic performance of senior high school students. It will examine the

prevalence of online game addiction among students and its effects on their

academic performance. The research will focus on grade 12 senior high students

aged 16 to 18 from various educational backgrounds. Both male and female


participants will be included to assess the impact of online gaming addiction on

academic performance. The study will consider participants who engage in online

gaming for leisure but may not exhibit addictive behavior.

The researcher limited this research only to Grade 12 HUMMS Students in

M’lang National High School Rizal St. with the minimum count of 30 respondents,

either male or female.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Online games- refer to video games played over the internet through a

computer or mobile device, often involving multiple players.

Academic performance- is the measure of a student's academic achievement,

based on their grades, test scores, attendance, and participation in academic

activities.

Students- are individuals who are enrolled in an academic institution pursuing

formal education to gain knowledge, skills, and expertise needed for their future

careers
