Pre-reading

1. Conduct an online navigation of the synonyms and antonyms of the word security. (You
may also refer to synonym.com: https://www.synonym.com/synonyms/security or
antonnym.com: https://www.antonym.com/antonyms/shelter)
2. What is your idea or perception of security? / To what concept, word or idea do you
associate security? Think of supporting details and evidence that will describe and
explain your concept, idea, or perception of security.
3. Note some points in the essay that you agree or disagree with. For instance, reflect
whether you agree or disagree with the following:
a. Nothing is secure.
b. We are essentially displaced people.

While Reading

Post- reading activity

1. Formulate at least 3-5 interview or survey questions about one’s personal view of
security and administer this survey/interview among your friends, family members,
or acquaintances. Write a report of the result of the survey or interview by providing
the following contents: one paragraph description of the overall results and one
paragraph conclusion about the results.)

2. Suppose you are to rewrite Eve Ensler’s essay on The Real Meaning of Security. How
will you develop your essay. Go back to the pre-reading guide questions and design a
topical outline to illustrate this : What is your idea or perception of security? / To
what concept, word or idea do you associate security? Think of supporting details
and evidences that will describe and explain your concept, idea, or perception of
security.

3. After reading the essay, how would you define freedom and security? What
characterize or define a “false sense of security” and a “true” or “right” sense of
security? Define and enumerate the characteristics. Describe a specific example
where these characteristics are applied. You may show short video clip, movie, or
anything that will reinforce your definition.

4. To what idea or ideology do you associate security? How do you find security in our
modern world where everything is becoming secularized? (Conduct a research and
think of the following ideologies that influence one’s perception of security:
narcissism, relativism, consumerism, technology and innovations, Hedonism: the
desire for excessive pleasure). Discuss this in class and give specific examples.
5. Watch the 20-minute video of Bruce Schneier’s “The Security Mirage” in Ted Talk in
this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQJC2MMB8nA. Identify the key
points raised by the speaker and discuss whether you agree or disagree with those.
Be ready to report and discuss this in class. You may also refer to the following link

6. Identify specific sector in our society (i.e. education, business, etc ) and list down
some of the security mechanisms that it employs to protect its service. Conduct
research on this and present it in class containing the following components: role,
security mechanisms, significance and relevance.
