Justice N Anand Venkatesh of the Madras High Court took suo motu action to review orders that discharged political leaders from graft cases in special courts for MPs and MLAs. Specifically, the High Court decided to review an order that acquitted the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister and DMK leader K Ponmudy and his wife in a disproportionate assets case. The Justice warned that if the trend of political leaders being discharged in special courts continues unchecked, it could undermine the criminal justice system. He noted there are systemic problems and failures that have reached the point where any case can be closed.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh, who is on a self-avowed mission to review the
orders of the trial court discharging political leaders from graft cases. The suo motu review is being made on an order of a special court for MP/MLAs.The Madras High Court has decided to take up a suo motu revision of the order of a court in Vellore which acquitted Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister and senior DMK leader K Ponmudy and his wife in a disproportionate assets case registered by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC).Discharging Periyasamy from a graft case involving illegal allotment of housing site to a personal security officer of late leader M Karunanidhi while Valarmathi came under the scanner for her discharge in a disproportionate assets case. All the cases were listed before the high court for revision .the justice warned that if this trends goes unchecked the special courts meant for MP/MLA trials would become a “playground for all sort of condemnable practices which are handcrafted and orchestrated to subvert and derail the criminal justice system’’.There is systemic problems and failure. The problem has reached a stage where any case can be closed,” he said adding only, "God can save the institution".
