Hi Ahmed, here are the notes that I made during the lesson on the three conditional tenses

in English. It is particularly important that you understand the third conditional because this
was one of your mistakes on the placement test. I hope this helps and is clear enough – if
you have any questions you can ask me in the next lesson.

First Conditional
If it rains I will get wet.

Structure

If - present simple – subject –will- verb

Logical Consequences - First conditional is used to talk about actions/events in the future
which are likely to happen or have a real possibility of happening

Second Conditional
If it rained I would get wet,

If – past simple – subject – would -verb

Less probable -Second conditional is used in situations/actions in the present or future

which are not likely to happen or are imaginary, hypothetical or impossible.

Third Conditional

If it had rained I would have got wet

If I had worked hard at school I would have got a good job

If I had been kind to my wife I would be with her.

If I had been kind she would have stayed with me.

I I had learned Japanese I could have lived in Japan.

Hypothetical – it is imaginary – it didn’t happen – very often we use the third conditional to
talk about regrets or situations we would have liked to have had a better outcome.

If we had employed better and more qualified staff we would have done a better
job/project.

Grammar Structure
if + past perfect, ...would + have + past participle

Would – conditional

Could – ability and potential

Should – obligation.
