TOPIC 1: TIPANAN SA PIGING (LENTEN SEASON)

LENTEN SEASON
● Lent - Latin: Quadragesima (Fortieth)
● Lent, in the Christian church, is a 40 day penitential preparation for Easter.
● Faithfuls prepare through prayer, fasting, and penance.

ASH WEDNESDAY
● Lenten Season begins on Ash Wednesday.
● The ashes symbolize our mortality - “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

ACTS OF PENANCE
● Fasting
● Abstinence
● Alms Giving
● Act of Charity
● Confession
● Meditation
● Prayer
● Repentance

WHY DO WE FAST/ABSTAIN?
● God said so.
- “Fasting is a way to humble yourself in the sight of God.” (Psalm 35:13; Ezra 8:21)
● In imitation of Christ.
● To atone for our sins.
● To be able to pray better.

TOPIC 2: JESUS MAKES US HIS WITNESSES (CONFIRMATION)

CONFIRMATION
● Is a sacrament received after Baptism at the age of discretion of the person.
● Confirmation marks a new stage in the life of a Christian.
● Confirmation is conferred by “anointing with holy chrism on the forehead, done while imposing the hands
and by these words: “(Name), be sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.”

EFFECTS OF THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION


● The main effect of the Sacrament of Confirmation is to strengthen the baptized Christian and increase the
grace received at baptism toward becoming a witness of Christ.
● Personal knowledge and awareness
● Strong and active commitment to Christ.
● A basic grounding in Scriptures and Church’s teachings.
● Leadership qualities of integrity and honesty.
● Attractive and persuasive communication skills.
● Courage to suffer for the Kingdom of God.

SALT OF THE EARTH


● A very good and honest person or group of people. A person of great worth and reliability.
● “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no
longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” (Matthew 5:13)
- Salt is used as a preservative, and to thus see the duty of the disciples and followers as preserving
the purity of the world. We are called to help preserve God’s truth.

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST THAT WE SHARE FROM HIM?


● Spirit of holiness
● Spirit of love
● Spirit of life
● Spirit of power
● Spirit of truth
● Spirit of forgiveness

TOPIC 3: JESUS NOURISHES OUR SOUL (HOLY EUCHARIST)

THE FIRST HOLY MASS


● To preserve this act of sacrifice throughout the ages, he entrusted this to the Church.
○ Banquet/meal
○ Sacrifice
○ Thanksgiving
● Jesus is truly present in the Eucharistic Celebration.
● All angels and the saints who have gone before us are all present in every sacrifice of the Mass.

CHRIST NOURISHES HIS DISCIPLES


● Body and blood - whole person.
● Jesus Christ gave totally Himself to us.
● Either the consecrated bread or wine, we receive the whole living Lord.
● His apostles continued to share his teachings.

FRUITS OF COMMUNION
● Unites us with Christ
● Separates us from Venial Sin.
- IMPORTANT: We will only be able to receive these fruits if we receive the Eucharist WORTHILY.
No one should receive communion in the state of mortal sin.
HOW TO PROPERLY RECEIVE?
● Com - with; union - being joined or being together.
● Receiving Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
● We should be neat, clean, modest in our appearance, and respectful and reverent in our manner.
● Be devout and fervent as it if were the only Communion of our lives.

TRUTH IN A NUTSHELL
● The Eucharist was instituted by Christ Himself. The Last Supper is the First Holy Mass.
● Jesus unites us through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass: The Church Militant, Church Suffering/Penitent, and
the Church Triumphant.
● We should be neat, clean, modest in our appearance, and respectful and reverent in our manner, not only
physically but also spiritually.

TOPIC 4: JESUS RECONCILES US WITH THE FATHER (CONFESSION)

GRACE
● Referring to God’s gift of presence. Graces are also the blessings that we receive from God even though we
do not deserve him.

WALL BETWEEN GOD


● When we commit sins repeatedly, especially the mortal ones, we are like building a wall between God and
us, and because of that, we do not receive the graces that He is giving us.

STATE OF GRACE

FORGIVENESS OF GOD
● Confession (Admission of mistakes)
- CONFESSION requires humility
- “A humble and contrite heart, God will not spurn.”
● Penance (Conversion)
- PENANCE focuses on the change of a person’s character
- This change includes being sorry for the sins committed, changing bad attitude, and repairing the
damage done to people.
● Reconciliation (giving importance to relationship)
- End of the estrangement, caused by original sin, between God and humanity.

PURPOSE OF THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION?


● Obtain forgiveness from God & the Church
● GOD - by hurting others, we are disobeying Him because He commanded us to love one another. We sin
against Him.
● CHURCH - Since we are a family of God, whatever we do affects the community. Sin causes scandal, a
bad example to others. We are not helping them to become a better person.

TOPIC 5: JESUS BINDS A MAN AND A WOMAN (MATRIMONY/MARRIAGE)

MARRIED LIFE
● state of life that a man and woman choose to live in love, united, and sanctified by God in the sacrament of
matrimony.
● A Christian vocation with a purpose: to build a lifelong, intimate, and sacramental partnership of love and
life.
● It is a personal call - offered freely and must be accepted freely.
● Demands faithfulness.
MISCONCEPTIONS ON MARRIED LIFE
● Marriage as a solution to a problem.
● Marriage as utopia. (perfect state or condition, devoid of suffering and trial)
● Marriage as a romantic love story.
● Marriage makes converts.
MISSION OF THE MARRIED COUPLE
● Mission: foster the Kingdom of God.
● Share the love of Christ with each other and with the community.

TASKS OF THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY


● According to Pope John Paul II in his “Familiaris Consortio.”
● Form a community of people.
● Serve life through procreation and the education of offspring.
● Participate in the development of society.
● Share in the mission of the church.

MARRIED COUPLES: HOW TO KEEP THE RELATIONSHIP


● Put God at the center of the relationship.
● Pray together.
● Ask for God's grace.

TOPIC 6: JESUS OFFERS THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE (HOLY ORDERS)

HOLY ORDERS
● Instituted to continue Christ's mission.
● It is called the Sacrament of Apostolic Ministry (the service of Jesus continued by the apostles.)
● ORDER - means "the group or body of those who carry out certain functions."
● ORDINATION - the sacramental act by which one is integrated into the order of bishops, priests, and
deacons.

DEGREES OF THE ORDERS


Bishops
● Duty: sanctifying, teaching, ruling
● Pastoral responsibility for a particular diocese entrusted to them.
● Provide care for all the churches.
Priests
● Duty: to preach the gospel
● Shepherd the faithful.
● Celebrate divine worship as true priests.
Deacons
● Duty: Serve the people of God in the service of the liturgy, of the gospel, and of works of charity.
● can only administer the sacraments of: baptism, anointing of the sick, and marriage without the Holy Mass.

TOPIC 7: JESUS CARES FOR THE SICK (ANOINTING OF THE SICK)

WHAT DOES SICKNESS TELL US?


We have human limitations.
● We are imperfect, and so, no matter how much we take care of ourselves, we will get sick.
We are in need of others.
● We need other people’s help. No man is an island.
We are in need of God’s grace.
● Sickness makes us aware of God’s grace.
It can bring us to a more mature faith.
● It helps us embrace pain and find its meaning.
● It helps us become braver.

EFFECTS OF THE SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK


Spiritual Healing
● Strengthens the person spiritually to trust God and resist temptations, which include anxiety about death.
Physical Healing
● God may do it to heal us physically through our faith.

HOLY VIATICUM
● The Holy Eucharist is given to the dying person.
● “Viaticum” - with you on the way.
