Foreword
By prioritizing the preservation of
the natural landscape and leveraging
materials for their sustainability and
efficiency, Boathouse seamlessly
integrates into its surroundings. The
deliberate decision to work with the
existing topography and employ eco-
conscious materials such as recycled
wood and strategic zoning not only
minimizes environmental impact
but also maximizes functionality and
cost-effectiveness.
Additionally, the incorporation of
green elements like earth-covered
roofs showcases a thoughtful
approach to energy conservation and
harmonious coexistence with nature,
demonstrating how meticulous
design can holistically intertwine with
ecological responsibility.

Boathouse

Site Context
Nestled on the edge of a quaint gated community on the outskirts of Ahmedabad sits a humble
abode - the Boathouse. With rough concrete textured walls holding large wooden windows and lots
of greenery around, the house is hard to miss. The society is currently scantily developed which
gave the architect the freedom to design and provide maximum openings. It also allowed her to
make maximum use of the sunlight and the wind coming in respectively.

Basement Floor
The site of the Boathouse had a natural slope of almost 4mtrs between the front and the rear of
the plot. This gave the architect an opportunity to come up with a basement as well as a splash
pool. She carved out a basement that later on became her den where she created her home
office and the required services adjacent to it. The splash pool has fountains and lots of greenery
around for anyone to sit and enjoy.

Home Office
The home office is a quiet and peaceful space for the architect and her staff members to work in
solitude. A long wooden desk surrounded by windows that overlook the lush greenery outside
provide the users with just the right amount of pleasure. The office opens into a verandah that
overlooks a splash pool where one can sit and enjoy a quiet evening cup of tea.

Splash Pool
The initial idea that the architect had was to have a full size swimming pool in the backyard, but
since space was limited the architect when on to design a splash pool where nature and humans
can both enjoy the space. The splash pool has nature living inside it in the form of fish, moss and
plants but it can also be enjoyed by humans since these natural organisms keep the water clean.
A set of water fountains keeps the water moving and also allowing natural ventilation.

Ground Floor
The Boathouse is divided into 2 bays. One has all the living spaces while the other has all the
services. The ground floor too is divided into these bays. The living bay has a large living room
with a balcony that overlooks the splash pool below and a guest bedroom while the service bay
has the kitchen, powder room and the toilets and bathrooms for the guest bedroom.

Entryway
The architect wanted visitors to circumnavigate the building before actually entering the house.
Hence she provided the entry on the side. A pathway leads one towards a long ramp that takes one
to the entrance foyer. Because the entryway is at a height and projects out, it almost feels as if you
are amidst the surrounding trees. A couple of benches are provided here for more comfort. A large
9ft wooden door welcomes one into the house.

Entrance Lobby
As one enters the house, a wide entrance lobby welcomes one inside. To provide privacy to the living
room, an almost transparent partition is provided between the lobby and the living room. Waste
wooden batons from the shuttering for concrete have been clad on the wall of the lobby and a bright
yellow terrazzo adorns the floor here.

Living Room
A large living room is provided in the living bay of boathouse. The living room opens out to a balcony
that overlooks the splash pool below. The living room has 2 types of seating, one inspired from the
french Mah Jong style modular sofas and the other is a fixed seating. All beams in the house have
been inverted which gave the architect a chance to convert the hollow spaces into liveable spaces
as well as into fixed furniture pieces. A long linear window provides framed views of the greenery
around and brings in beautiful evening light.

Kitchen
The kitchen in the service bay was designed in a distinct way where the platform is placed in the
center of the room instead of being attached to a wall. This island platform has ample storage below
and one end of the platform forms the dining table for anyone to sit and enjoy hot food off the stove.
A separate sink counter is provided in an additional cantilevered space for better functionality. Large
french doors open up into the rear garden providing the user with views of the lush greenery all the
time.

Guest Bedroom
The guest bedroom on the ground floor is sunken due to the presence of inverted beams here as
well. Large french windows open up towards the front of the house thus keeping the occupant aware
of the happenings around the house. The louvers in the french windows also provides the adequate
privacy that the occupant requires. Terrazzo flooring from the living room continues here as well.

Staircase & Passage

The space between the 2 bays has a large triple height void which houses the staircase that connects
all the floors. Passages that connect all the spaces with each other are also provided here. The
staircase is a composite of steel structure and wooden treads whereas the passage is made solely
out of steel bars to provide transparency throughout the void.

First Floor
The first floor is majorly a private zone. It houses 2 bedroom, one in each bay. The master bedroom
is almost like a suite with a separate seating space and gardens on all three sides whereas the
other bedroom is fairly minimal with an attached bathroom and balcony.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom too has a sunken sleeping area as well as a sunken seating area. To maintain
the privacy of the sleeping space, a wooden partition has been provided between the two spaces.
On one side of the bedroom is a terrace lawn and on the other is a home grown garden. Both these
areas are connected to each other from the outside through a pathway that runs along the bedroom
thus making all three sides of the bedroom green. A wooden ceiling is provided here with a single
sided slope for aesthetic purposes. Since the bedroom is open on three sides, the spaces is always
full of light and ventilation.

Conclusion
Taking on a project with limited resources significantly impacts architectural creativity, encouraging
architects to think outside the box. This innovation, founded on sustainability and concern for the
environment, is brought to life by the Boathouse project, which is located on the outskirts of the city.
The design easily fits into its surroundings by prioritizing the preservation of the natural landscape
and exploiting materials for their sustainability and efficiency.
