Exercise 2. In the gas-phase reaction, I 2 + Cl2 → 2ICl, [I2] changes from 0.400M at 0.00 min to 0.300M at
4.00 min. Calculate the average reaction rate in moles of I2 consumed per liter per minute.
Solution:
Substitute k = 2.90 ×
102 (L2/(mol2·s)),
rate = (2.90 × 102 L2/(mol2. s))(0.00200 mol/L)2(0.00400 mol/L) [NO] = 0.00200M,
and [H2] = 0.00400M.
rate = 4.64 × 10-6 mol/(L.s) Multiply the
numbers and units.
Exercise5. Calculate the instantaneous rate for the reaction between NO and H2.
a. [NO] = 0.00500M and [H2] = 0.00200M
b. [NO] = 0.0100M and [H2] = 0.00125M
Solution:2NO(g) + H2(g) → N2O(g) + H2O(g)
a. rate = k[NO]2[H2] = 2.90 × 102 × 0.005002 × 0.00200 = 1.45 × 10-5 mol/(L.s)
b. rate = k[NO]2[H2] = 2.90 × 102 × 0.01002 × 0.00125 = 3.625 × 10-5 mol/(L.s)
Exercise 6.Calculate [NO] for the reaction 2NO(g) + H2(g) → N2O(g) +H2O(g)if the rate is 9.00 × 10-5
mol/(L.s) and [H2] is 0.00300M.
Solution:

[NH 3]=0.933mol/L [H 2]=1.600mol/L

Exercise 11. The reaction COCl2(g) ⇌ CO(g) + Cl2(g) reaches equilibrium at 900K. Keq is 8.2 × 10-2. If the
equilibrium concentrations of CO and Cl2 are 0.150M, what is the equilibrium concentration of COCl2?

Exercise 14. Explain how you would regulate the pressure to favor the products in the following equilibrium
system.MgCO3(s) ⇌ MgO(s) + CO2(g)
Solution:
Decrease the pressure so that equilibrium shifts to the right (and thus favors the products). The way I learned it
is if you decrease the pressure, the equation will favor the side that increases the mole of gases.
b. Increase heat so that equilibrium shifts to the left. The reactants would be favored, and C 2H6 would decrease
by turning back into the reactants.
Likewise, to decrease the amount of ethylene, decrease the temperature. The reaction will favor the products,
and ethylene will be consumed to create ethane and heat.
c. Increase heat so that equilibrium shifts to the left (and thus favors the reactants)
To increase the amount of hydrogen, you must increase the temperature. Then the reaction will favor the
reactant side because it takes heat to create the reactants. This will result in the increase of the amount of
hydrogen in the system.
