Answer the Following Questions


Question # 1: (20 Marks)
A) (4 Marks)
State, in details, the main properties and distinct advantages of the digital control.

B) (4 Marks)
Illustrate the main components to construct a digital control system, support your answer
with the main block diagram of the digital control system and examples as possible.

C) (4 Marks)
A fluid level control system includes a tank, a level sensor, a fluid source, and an inflow
valve as an actuator to control fluid inflow.
i) Construct a block diagram to show how the fluid level could be digitally controlled.
ii) State the function of each block.

D) (8 Marks)
Use the Z-transformation formula to obtain the Z-transform of the following functions:
i) Unit step function, 𝑢(𝑡).
ii) Exponential function, 𝑒 −𝑎𝑡 for 𝑡 ≥ 0.
iii) Sinusoidal function, 𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝜔𝑡) for 𝑡 ≥ 0.
iv) Unit ramp function 𝑟(𝑡) = 𝑡.

Obtain the inverse z-transform of the following functions:

i) F(z) = , using long division method.

i) The system transfer function.
ii) Z-transform of the system transfer function.
iii) The response of the system to a unit step function.
iv) The block diagram of the system in z-domain.

A) (20 Marks)
For the system shown in Figure 2, the sampling period is T = 0.5 sec. and the digital
controller is of the integral type, its transfer function is:
