By submitting any part of this assignment you automatically declare the following:

The University of Pretoria commits itself to produce academic work of integrity. I affirm that I am
aware of and have the read the Rules and Policies of the University, more specifically the Disciplinary
Procedure and the Tests and Examination Rules, which prohibit any unethical, dishonest or improper
conduct during tests, assignments, examinations and/or any other forms of assessment. I am aware
that no student or any other person may assist or attempt to assist another student, or obtain help,
or attempt to obtain help from another student or any other person during tests, assessments, assign-
ments, examinations and/or any other forms of assessment.

NB: It is advisable to do the relevant exercises in the textbook the previous week before attempting
the assignment. You must complete all questions. Only selected questions will be marked.

Question 1 [4 marks]
1.1. It is fun to be creative and invent functions with certain properties.
1.1.1. Define a function f : R → R such that lim f (x) = 1, lim f (x) = 2 and f (7) = 3.
x→7− x→7+

1.1.2. Define functions f, g : R → R so that g is continuous everywhere, g(x) = |f (x)| for any x ∈ R
but lim f (x) and lim f (x) are distinct real numbers. Briefly explain why your example works.
x→4− x→4+

1.1.3. Define functions f, g : R → R such that lim f (x) = lim g(x) = ∞ and lim (f (x) − g(x)) = 7.
x→∞ x→∞ x→∞
Briefly explain why your example works.

1.2. You must understand proofs. We can test mathematical understanding of a proof by asking a
comprehension question. Here is one inspired by Theorem 3.3.7.

Let f : R → R and a, L ∈ R. Assume that

(A1 aka assumption A1) lim f (x) = L.
x→a−
(A2 aka assumption A2) lim f (x) = L.
x→a+
Then lim f (x) = L. A framework for a proof of this fact is given below.
x→a
Step 1 Fix > 0.
Step 2 There exists a real number δ1 > 0 so that if a < x < a + δ1 then L − < f (x) < L + .
Step 3 There exists a real number δ2 > 0 so that if a − δ2 < x < a then L − < f (x) < L + .
Step 4 There exists a real number δ > 0 so that if x ∈ (a − δ, a) ∪ (a, a + δ) then L − < f (x) < L + .
Step 5 Thus lim f (x) = L.
x→a

1.2.1. From which assumption(s) does Step 2 follow? (Answer in one sentence.)
1.2.2. In Step 4, how should δ be chosen? (Answer in one sentence.)
1.2.3. Prove the claim made in Step 4. (Show all the details. Hint: Treat two cases.)
1.2.4. How does one turn the inequality in Step 4 into |f (x) − L| < .
Question 2 [3 marks]
4x
2.1. Let f (x) = . Prove by using an appropriate definition that lim f (x) = 0.
x2 + 5 x→∞

x
2.2.1. Let g(x) = 2e−x +3| sin x|
. Prove that if x > 0 then g(x) > x5 . Please clearly indicate the proper-
ties of exponential function and sine function that you use to achieve this result.

2.2.2. Use 2.2.1. and prove that lim g(x) = ∞ by using an appropriate definition.
x→∞

Question 3 [3 marks]
Z
3.1. Suppose In = (ln x)n dx where n is a positive integer. Use integration by parts and prove that
In = x(ln x)n − nIn−1 for all n > 1.
Z
3.2. Determine J = e2x cos(3x)dx. VERIFY that your answer is correct by differentiation.

3.3. Determine the area enclosed by the curves with equations y = sin4 x, y = 0, x = 0 and x = π.

3.4.1. Prove that = tan2 x sec2 x − sec2 x + 1.
cot4 x Z
dx
3.4.2. Use 3.4.1 and determine .
cot4 x
Z
3.5. Which identity will you use to determine sin(3x + 5) cos(1 − 2x)dx. Only write down the
trigonometric identity that will be useful. Do not determine this integral.

NB: Make sure you do Exercise 4.2 Number 6. This is important for Fourier transformations which
you will see in second year.
