Course Title: Communication Systems Course Code: EE 350
Coordinator: Dr. Shawki Shaaban (R.I.P)
Instructor: Dr. Hanan El-Gammal Sheet - 3
Assistant: Eng. Marwa Elhdad

Sheet (3): 4G & 5G Mobile Generations

1. Mobile Wi-MAX (Wi-MAX IEEE802.16e) uses adaptive modulation and coding

techniques with variable bandwidth to meet the different channel conditions:
The system uses QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM modulation techniques with channel
coding of different code rates (1/2), (2/3) and (3/4). The channel bandwidth varies as
(1.75, 3.5, 7, 14 and 20 MHz).
Given that the resultant bit rate for a bandwidth of 3.5 MHz, with QPSK modulation
and (3/4) code rate is 4.36 Mbps, What will be the corresponding bit rate for each of
the following states:
i. Available bandwidth = 7 MHz, modulation technique is 16-QAM, and coding
rate is (1/2).
ii. Available bandwidth = 1.75 MHz, modulation technique is 64-QAM, and
coding rate is (2/3).
Repeat (i) and (ii) when:
iii. MIMO system of 4×4 is used.
iv. MIMO system of 2×2 is used.

2. Mobile Wi-MAX (Wi-MAX IEEE802.16e) uses adaptive modulation and coding

techniques with variable bandwidth to meet the different channel conditions, without
the use of the MIMO technique. The system uses QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM
modulation techniques with channel coding of different code rates (1/2), (2/3) and
(3/4). The channel bandwidth varies as (1.75, 3.5, 7, 14 and 20 MHz).
Given that the resultant bit rate for a bandwidth of 20 MHz, with 64-QAM modulation
and (3/4) code rate is 73.19 Mbps, What will be the corresponding bit rate for each of
the following states marked by numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5? And what is the resultant
maximum data rate when a MIMO technique with 4×4 pattern is used?

3. Mobile Wi-MAX (Wi-MAX IEEE802.16e) uses adaptive modulation and coding

techniques with variable bandwidth to meet the different channel conditions. The
system uses QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM modulation techniques with channel coding of
different code rates (1/2), (2/3) and (3/4). The channel bandwidth varies as (1.75, 3.5,
7, 14 and 20 MHz). Given that the resultant data rate for a bandwidth of 3.5 MHz with
QPSK modulation and (3/4) code rate is 4.36 Mbps without MIMO.
i. Find the corresponding data rate when the available bandwidth = 7 MHz, with
the modulation technique of 16-QAM and code rate of (1/2) with MIMO of 4×4.
ii. What is the required bandwidth for a data rate of 23.25 Mbps with 16-QAM
modulation technique, and code rate of (1/2) without MIMO?
iii. Select a suitable modulation technique needed to achieve a data rate of 66.438
Mbps with available bandwidth of 20 MHz and code rate of (2/3) without
MIMO.
iv. What will be the code rate that results in a data rate of 6.54 Mbps, with a
bandwidth of 1.75 MHz and 64-QAM modulation technique without MIMO?
