General

General
HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) is a digital com-
munication protocol that uses sine waves superimposed on the stan-
dard 4 - 20 mA current. Because the HART signal is small, and its
average value is zero it does not affect the accuracy of the analog
current signal.
HART is a master-slave communication protocol, which means that
during normal operation, each slave (field device) communication
is initiated by a master communication device. Two masters (a pri-
mary master and a secondary master) can connect to a HART loop.
The HART communication protocol is an open standard owned by
the member companies in the HART Communication Foundation
(HCF). For additional information contact:
HART Communication Foundation, 9390 Research Boulevard,
Suite I-350, Austin, Texas, 8759 USA.

MC5 and HART

MC5 Multifunction Calibrator’s HART communication is a firmware
option that can be used provided an E module is included in the
MC5 at hand. The HART modem required for HART communica-
tion is located in the E module and the terminals of the E module
are used for connecting MC5 with the Hart instrument.
MC5 supports HART Revision 5. Earlier revisions are not supported.
MC5 treats the Analog Output (AO) and the Digital Output (PV, Pri-
mary Variable) as separate instruments. To calibrate/trim both out-
put signals, an Analog Output instrument and a Digital Output in-
strument need to be created into MC5’s instrument database. This
can be done manually or automatically by communicating with the
HART instrument to be calibrated/trimmed.

HART Instruments and Beamex’s Calibration Database Software

Beamex’s QCAL® Calibration Database Software support HART in-
struments as follows:
QM6 Quality Manager starting from version 1.90.
Adding instruments created in MC5 to QM6’s database, starting
from version 1.90a.
QD3 Quality Documenter starting from version 2.10.

Connecting MC5 and a HART Instrument

How the HART instrument is connected to MC5 depends on the
supply power connection and whether there is a test diode con-
nected to the transmitter. The following pictures describe the con-
nections for each case.
