Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to be applying for the Coastal Wetlands Research Internship with the FWC’s Fish and
Wildlife Research Institute. I am currently an undergraduate at the University of South Florida,
studying Environmental Science and Policy, and I am eager to take on a position that will give me
experience working with the environment in a professional setting.

I am especially interested in this position because I admire the FWRI’s mission to seek and provide
information for the sake of protecting and conserving Florida’s natural environment. For most of
my life, I have been very passionate about environmental conservation. I am pursuing a degree in
Environmental Science and Policy with the hope that I can someday make a difference in
preserving important ecosystems and resources, both for the sake of valuable wildlife and for us
humans, now and in the future. In that vein, I am very interested in conservation and restoration of
natural environments and resources, particularly wetlands. Someday I hope to find work that will
aid in wetland conservation and protection, and I know that working with the Coastal Wetlands
Research Program would provide me with valuable experience to work towards these goals.

I currently work at the Largo Public Library, which has given me an opportunity to work with the
public in many different capacities, assisting patrons of all ages with diverse needs. This position
has also allowed me to further hone my cataloging and organizational skills, as well as my
proficiency with various computer programs. I am detail oriented and a quick learner, so I am
always eager to take on a variety of new tasks. Throughout my time as a student, I have taken
many courses which have imparted upon me the importance of wetlands and other such aquatic
environments, and given me opportunities to go out in the field for wetland delineation and other
basic field work. In my many lab courses, I have gotten hands-on experience to develop various
skills such as following laboratory procedures, cataloging vegetation, and water quality analysis. I
have learned a great deal about many different environmental policies and ecosystems, and I am
eager to put my knowledge to work in a professional setting.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I am excited about this opportunity to work with the
FWRI. I would love the opportunity to meet in person to further discuss the position, my
qualifications, and the value I can bring to this position. Please reach out to me at (248) 326-4407
at your earliest convenience. New experiences such as this are invaluable to my growth in both my
academic career and in my professional career beyond. I look forward to this opportunity to share
my skills and my drive with your organization.

Sincerely,

Rachel Walls
