Lesson Idea Name: Stars and their Sizes

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd grade

Content Standard Addressed: S2E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about
stars having different sizes and brightness. a. Ask questions to describe the physical
attributes (size and brightness) of stars. b. Construct an argument to support the claim that
although the sun appears to be the brightest and largest star, it is actually medium in size
and brightness.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? Students will be able to design
and create a podcast about a star of their choosing and describe the physical features about
it and the size and how distance is an important factor of its size.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: spotify podcaster

Description of Software: its an online digital platform that allows you to create and edit
a podcast.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are
guided by the teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to
the student and mostly practice based.

< Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the
topic of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.
☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and
completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be
shared outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying
the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be creating their own 2 minute podcast about a star of their choosing and
discuss the size and how far it is from earth. The lesson will first be introduced by discussing
the “what do you see in the sky” podcast that was listened to at home. We will discuss all of
their findings and thoughts they came up with and answer questions about them as well.We
will discuss why stars are different sizes and how distance matters in the size. We will
discuss why some are brighter than others and how some can group together to create
shapes or figures. After the lesson over stars the students will be introduced to the podcast
and how to use it and what is expected to be in the podcast. The main focus here is how
stars are different sizes and why distance matters. Students will have time to brainstorm for a
part of the class and will be introduced to spotify podcasters and learn how to use it. They will
begin to create a transcript to prepare for what they will say in the podcast. Once they've
created it they are able to edit it and add music as they please to be able to present it later
toward the end of class.

Managing student learning: This tool spotify podcasters will benefit the students into
changing them from passive to active learning because it's allowing the student to think on
their own and create their ideas and have the ability to pick their own star. This will allow
them to learn a new tool and learn a new topic as well.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL
principle you are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple
Means of Representation, or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
This tool supports everyone in the classroom because it gives students multiple ways to learn
such as using the audio and transcript so it can help and allow students with different
disabilities to also learn. This lesson focuses on action and expression because it's allowing
students to take action and express their thoughts about the topic in multiple ways.

Reflection:
This activity will impact student learning because it allows them to create something of their
own and use their thoughts to create it. It will benefit them by learning what the stars mean
and why they are the way they are. I look forward to using and teaching the tool to the
students so they are able to learn a new useful tool.
