THE ROLE OF HUMAN RESOURCES IN THE WORK ENVIRONMENT 3

INTRODUCTION

Human Resources is “the process of employing people, training them, compensating

them, developing policies relating to them, and developing strategies to retain them” (1.1

What Is Human Resources? – Human Resource Management, 2016). Human Resources has a

strategic role in the work motivation and job satisfaction in an organization. Human Resource

managers are responsible for keeping a positive work motivation and job satisfaction that can

bring effective results to a company. When an organization satisfies and motivates their

employees, employees stay longer and have a deeper commitment to the organization and this

can help improve the organization’s products and services. Human resources can contribute

to employee work motivation and job satisfaction by communication, recognizing their

performance, involving them in the decision making, emphasis the work-life balance and

invest in training.

Communication

It’s important to keep an open communication with employees instead of ignoring or

distancing yourself from them. When employees feel that they can talk freely with you then

they can share problems and issues they are having. This will make them feel more at ease at

work (Miller, 2020). Human Resources can listen to their personal troubles they are going

through and try to help, even if it is just listening, the employees will still be grateful

nonetheless. Providing counsel and assistance will help employees to become motivated at

work.

Recognizing Performance

Employees gets motivated and feel satisfied when their performance gets recognized

by their managers or supervisors. It is good to show them how much their efforts mean to the

company. Even if they are not at their dream job, they would still like some recognition for

their efforts. Employees can be congratulated on successfully completing a job or reaching an

important milestone. Human Resources can give the employees a reward for their hard work.

These rewards can be money, enhanced benefits or a company sponsored trip (How to

Handle Employee Performance and Recognition Programs, 2018b). However, an employee

can just appreciate verbal or written a thank you or good job.

Involvement in the Decision Making

Employees do not like to be excluded because they might have a perspective on how

to improve the products or services of the business or might see something the upper

management missed (Academy, n.d.). Involvement in the decision making can make the

employees feel satisfied and motivated. Employees start to feel like their insights are

valuable. Furthermore, allowing them in the decision making also “helps build trust between

workers and managers and it also allows managers to establish more personal relationships

with their employees” (Miller, 2020).

Emphasis on Work Life Balance

It is very important for a company to create an environment that supports a work-life

balance. Employees can be drained by working many hours a day. As a human resources

manager, you should give them a chance to work at home, encourage vacation time and offer

flexible hours (Miller, 2020). As the employees who have a better work balance work harder,

productivity will increase. “It will also reduce staff turnover (employees who are burnt out

may quit their jobs) and increase employee engagement” (Miller, 2020).

Training
Training is an important factor in employee motivation. This is a form of appreciation

and recognition (Matsuo, 2021). Employees can be offered courses and seminar that will

improve their knowledge. Employees will be motivated to seek greater opportunities and

more work will be accomplished. By training employees, they will also more productive and

engaged. “Human Resource managers have the responsibility to ensure that their workforce

does not suffer from low self-worth, especially given that their feelings can impact their

actions at work” (Industry, 2019).

Conclusion
This goes to show how important human resources are in a work environment of a

company. Human Resource managers know how valuable employees are to a company. An

employee’s job satisfaction and work motivation are very critical to the long-term health and

success of a business. When employees feel they are appreciated or that you show you care

about them, they will feel satisfied and motivated to work hard. Without work motivation and

job satisfaction, a company will perform or employees will leave the company. A positive

work culture brings effective results to a company.
