SOCIO-CULTURAL DIMENSIONS OF LEARNING

Prof. Ed3

SOCIO-CULTURAL dimensions of learning stress the MUTUAL INTERACTUION

of SOCIAL and INDIVIDUAL PROCESSES in the construction of knowledge. Our
cognitive development processes are merely products of our SOCIETY and
CULTIURE. Culture makes society successful. Without a society, there will be no
culture to perpetuate it. CULTURE IS WHAT PEOPLE HAVE DEVELOPED
TOGETHER, WHAT THEY SHARE, AND HOW THEY LIVE TOGETHER.
A. SEMIOTIC (theory of signs and symbols) MEDIATION and INTERNALIZATION
As we communicate, we develop relationship; in our desire to establish and
maintain human relationships, we use effective LANGUAGE.
Language is used as a TOOL for SOCIAL INTERACTION. It guided us in
our personal behavior by doing SELF-TALK or “THINKING OUT LOUD”.
Gradually, self -talk has become more of a tool for self-directed and
self-regulating behavior.
In school, there are more COMPLEX SETS and pattern of interaction. As we have
internalized the use of language in self-talk, it develops along a RISING CURVE, then
it goes down and ENDS to the development of INNER SPEECH.

B. COMMUNICATION IN LEARNING
Communication requires language, and that language is socially negotiated,
constructed, and shared. By that, we mean that WORDS are not just sounds that
convey meaning. In the same way, LANGUAGE IS ARBITRARY (independent). Indeed,
only humans have developed a real communication system.
Through language, we can explore the most beautiful and wonderful human
experiences at various levels. It is so amazing that with language, we are able to send
rockets to the moon, transplant human organs, or more artificial snowstorms. There
are a lot of amazing things that only humans can experience and develop.

C. COMMUNICATION IN TEACHING
The communication of ideas, facts, information, feelings, and emotions is very
crucial in facilitating human learning.
Communication can be defined as ‘ANYTHING THAT CONVEYS
MEANING OR THAT PRODUCES LEARNING”.
Communication is the medium through which our thoughts and ideas are
illuminated. It is a means that carries message from one person to another; FROM
STUDENTS TO TEACHERS, FROM STUDENTS TO STUDENTS, FROM
TEACHERS TO TEACHERS, FROM SCHOOL LEADERS TO TEACHERS,
AMONG OTHERS.
Communication is a process by which two or more people exchange ideas,
information, facts, opinion, impressions, feelings, thoughts, and emotion in ways
that each GAINS a common understanding of MEANING.
The main goal of communication is for ONENESS OF MEANING.
Effective communication requires the effective use of symbols,
cues, or stimuli to which other people will react or respond. The
following are TYPES of MESSAGES INVOLVED IN COMMUNICATION

1. What we mean to say- It refers to ACTUAL message that we intend to

say.
2. What we actually say - It is the TRANSLATION of our ideas and
information. It is the message we deliver in the most effective manner.
How we deliver the message greatly affects what we mean to say.

3. What the other persons hears. - This is the message that other
people GET. With their senses, they are able to RECEIVE the intended
message.

4. What the other person thinks he hears - it is the message that the
other people actually HEAR from us. Within the information context, it
is what they get to receive.

5. What the person understands from what he thinks he has heard - It

is what a person’s THINK the message is all about. The
INTERPRETATION of the message depends on the person’s level of
understanding that sometimes it is perceived in a different light or
meaning. With this, problem may arise.

6. What other person says - It is the INFORMATION the other person

wants to CONVEY.

7. What the other person actually says - This is the message the other
person says based on HIS UNDERSTANDING of how to say it in the most
effective manner.

8. What we think the other persons says - It is our ASSUMPTION of the

message based on how the other persons deliver it.

9. What we understand from what we think we have heard -this is our

OWN LEVEL of giving impression and interpretations depend on how we
understand the message.
