Effectiveness of Community Policing Strategies in Crime Prevention
Effectiveness of Community Policing Strategies in Crime Prevention
Introduction
Community policing has enabled constant monitoring and surveillance of the communities through the mutual
cooperation of the people and the police bringing down the crime rates such as burglary, thefts, robberies, rape, drug
trafficking, assault, abductions and domestic violence. The public has taken the responsibility of guarding their
neighborhood and reporting any bizarre individuals and activities in the community. Such endeavor are only possible in
the people are willing to guard themselves and remit any information to the police (MacDonald, 2002). According to him,
both law enforcement agencies and the citizen living in the community needs to work together for the common good of
the community.
Community policing has emerged as a prominent strategy in modern law enforcement, aiming to foster collaborative
efforts between law enforcement agencies and local communities. The core principle of community policing is to establish
strong relationship and mutual trust between the police officers and the community with the ultimate goal is to reduce the
crime rate and to enhance the public safety.
The central tenet of Community policing is community involvement in solving community problems, including
crime. Previous research into the effectiveness of the community policing could not identify robust, one-tailed results
on the crime reduction. However, findings suggest that community policing may have a positive effect on the citizen
satisfaction, fear of crime and trust in the police (Weisburd & Eck, 2004; Skogan, 2004).
