CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Eco Transpo Bicycle Rental is a rental business that aims to help the government

in creating a smoke free Dinalupihan by encouraging everyone to take a membership

from the company. It promotes using bicycle instead of motorcycle to preserve the

environment, and to lessen the production of carbon dioxide.

The said rentals would not only aim on the profit but also on the environment,

because it is promoting on eco-friendly vehicle such as bicycle, and being a biker could

be a contribution for us to maintain a healthy body and lastly, the rentals will also be

promoting an eco-friendly activity, like planting trees and clean and green project.

Eco Transpo Bicycle Rentals allows every member to use a bicycle for a short

journey or activity such as using bicycle for exercising and return them after the assign

time.

The Philippines ranked 3rd of the highest causes of death due to air pollution and

one cause of pollution is the smoke that comes from the motorcycle and PUV which is

considered as a toxic substance that affects the ozone layer negatively and excessive use

of it could, trigger air pollution.

Cycling has a lot of benefits to the beneficiary such as their health improves joint

mobility, increase the muscle flexibility, it improves posture and most important it

decrease body fat levels, having such body is a relief to the bikers who is a member of

eco transpo.

1
Riding bicycle minimal fossil fuels because it is a pollution free mode of

transportation and according to department of Transport and Man Roads, riding a bicycle

10km each way can save 1500 kg of greenhouse gas emission each year. Therefore, it is

more advisable to the public to ride a bicycle if they want to promote an eco-friendly

environment.

Thus, to sight an air pollution free province was the main vision of the study

therefore, the researchers will try all the efforts to sprout a smoke free Dinalupihan.

2
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Nowadays people cannot imagine their life without using an automobile.

Community used it as a mean of transportation and easy access to their destination. In a

bustling region smoke and dust is evident in the street, the consistent noise of the rolling

tires contributes to the highway noise which increases the amount of disturbance in the

road. In addition to this the uncontrollable growth of the cars causes traffic in some area.

The study aims to promote the smoke free and eco-friendly Dinalupihan. The

usage of bike can help lessen the smoke that a car releases in the road. Instead of riding

an automobile, a bike can be a replacement of transportation. By having a membership,

you can use the bike to stroll and at the same time it can be used in exercising. Some

events will be conducted such as the members will be engaged in some competition and

in the end of race the participants can help the nature by planting trees.

The Eco Transpo Bicycle Rentals will be constructed at General Luna

Dinalupihan, Bataan near the public market and field. The place is well located to where

a lot of athletes and individuals can have distinguished and go. Since it is near the market

people will ask and get interested in joining the membership.

The bike rental targets the athletes and people in different professions. In their

vacant time, they can proceed to the shop and can rent the bike to release some stress.

Their usage of bike can benefit their physical and mental health.

3
PROPOSED NAME AND LOGO

The proposed logo

of the business was designed to be simple, but there are deep symbolisms that are

included. The tree leaves represents the 3P which means “protect, prevent and preserve”.

It will protect the environment, to prevent the air pollution that will harm the ozone layer,

and to preserve the beautiful nature. The athlete in the picture represents that the

members of the Eco-Transpo Bicycle Rentals are the one who will conserve the

environment. The sky blue color represents the clear and clean sky. The name as it say

Eco-Transpo Bicycle Rentals, will be an eco-friendly business and transportation. The

blue circle represents the mother earth and the 4 lines above the leaves it means reuse,

reduce, recycle and refuse. The underline means the road.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELTAED LITERATURE

FOREIGN LITERATURE

In the system level analysis, the results showed that the selected factors have the

different influence over the different time periods within a day. Especially, scorching heat

was observed that high temperature over 30 °C reduces the bicycle usage, which revealed

the necessity of taking into account not only severe colds but also heat waves in the

prediction of the demand. By clustering analysis, the stations were partitioned into the

three clusters. One cluster shows the strong peak in the morning while two others have

peaks in the evening. The effects of weather conditions and non-working days on the

demand for public bicycles were different depending on the clusters, which seemed to be

related to the main purposes of bike usage in the clusters. (Kim, 2018)

The presented article shows the right time to ride a bicycle because to secure the

safety of the members is the very first priority of the rentals and it is more appropriate to

ride a bicycle at morning and night, stated above. It is also stated, the effects of weather

condition in the demand.

The number of policy initiatives to promote the use of bike, or the combined use

of bicycle and public transport for one trip, has grown considerably over the past decade

as part of the search for more sustainable transport solutions. This paper presents an

optimization formulation to design a bike-sharing system for travel inside small

communities, or as a means to extend public transport for access and egress trips. The

mathematical model attempts to optimize a bike-sharing system by determining the

minimum required bike fleet size that minimizes simultaneously unmet demand,

13
unutilized bikes, and the need to transport empty bikes between rental stations to meet

demand. The proposed approach is applied to an example problem and is shown to be

successful, ultimately providing a new managerial tool for planning and analyzing bike

utilization more effectively (Sayarshad, Tavassoli et al, 2012)

Stated by the article, bicycle as a public transport has grown considerably over the

past decade as a part for more sustainable transport solutions. Therefore, the researchers

will include that bicycle rental is in demand nowadays.

Federal land management agencies are exploring how bicycle programs can

provide employees and visitors with more travel choices, while working toward their

environmental, public health and sustainability goals. This report explores three options

for making bicycles more readily available in Federal lands: public bicycle sharing

programs, bicycle rental operations and employee bicycle fleets. Bicycle sharing

programs are a form of public transportation, supplying bikes for short-term use through

a network of automated bike parking stations. Bike rental programs are typically for-

profit businesses that rent bikes for recreational use for a few hours up to several days.

Employee fleets make bikes available to individuals associated with an organization to

use for work, errands and/or recreation, usually at no cost. This report builds on previous

work from The Guide to Promoting Bicycling on Federal Lands (FHWA, 2008a), which

sought to raise awareness of the environmental, public health and resource management

benefits of bicycling. This report presents various methods to make bikes more available

in Federal lands through bike sharing programs, rentals and employee fleets. This report

explores how elements of successful bike programs may be adapted for Federal lands

settings (Gleason and Miskimins, 2012).

14
Bicycle Rentals also promotes environmental awareness because it does not emits

smoke unlike other vehicles, it also have a big impact to one’s health because it exercise

the muscle and bones of every beneficiary.

A common issue observed in bike-sharing systems is imbalances in the

distribution of bikes. We use Data Mining to gain insight into the complex bike activity

patterns at stations. Activity patterns reveal imbalances in the distribution of bikes and

lead to a better understanding of the system structure. A structured Data Mining process

supports planning and operating decisions for the design and management of bike-sharing

systems. (Vogel, 2011).

Eco Transpo Bicycle Rental will provide an effective way to balance the

distribution of bike in sharing system, and activity pattern reveals imbalances to it. Thus,

the rentals will provide a proper sharing system, such as being a member of the said

rentals.

This paper first draws an outline of a travel demand forecasting procedure used in

Paris's bike rental station planning. The procedure is pre-missed on 4 types of zonal land-

use data, i.e., population, employment, commercial and public establishments, and

capable of estimating average zonal trips, and thus the numbers of bike rental stations and

bikes in a station. The paper then discusses strategies, tips, and the impact factors on

rental station positioning. Also discussed are rental station deployment patterns, keynotes

to deploy rental stations along roadside, on sidewalks, or near street-trees, and rental

station requirements for bikes, stand racks, and other amenities. Finally, in light of

experiences from Paris, the paper points out that a) The argument merely to deal with the

"last kilometer to end a transit trip" for bike sharing system in some cities in China is

15
unfavorable to deploy rental stations in a proper way, b) deployment of a majority of

rental stations on sidewalks would induce new traffic problems, and c) it is desirable,

within a rental station, to keep the amenities simple, fine-tuned, long-lasting, and less

room-taking (Geng, Tian et al, 2009).

Although there are a lot of arguments in bicycle rentals, the researchers will still

pursue the said rentals to promote eco-friendly transportation for the future and the next

beholder of our mother nature.

LOCAL LITERATURE

The Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) recognizes the role of

nonmotorized transport for sustainable urban development in its policy framework.

National and local policymakers in Thailand and The Philippines, two tropical countries

without a tradition of urban cycling, are increasingly paying attention to cycling as well.

This article aims to assess the current situation and progress in cycling, using Bangkok

and Metropolitan Manila as case study cities, and to describe the necessary conditions for

advancing the significance of cycling in tropical megacities (Bakker and Guillen, 2018).

Even the ASEAN recognize the importance of non-motorize transportation to

sustain urban development the article also stated the progress in cycling since the

Philippines is a tropical country.

People need a clear, compelling vision of an equitable, sustainable economy that

brings a high quality of life for everyone, a dynamic economy of the people, by the

people and for the people. The study determined the economic relevance of beach resorts

operating in Moalboal, Cebu, Philippines based on the perception of the various sectors

16
in the community. The results served to improve and sustain the economic growth and

development of the community. (Mabini-Consigny, 2018)

Philippines are known of its beaches; therefore, the said rentals will preserve the

nature by promoting an Eco-Friendly transportation or bicycle to lessen the emission of

carbon dioxide.

This study addresses the use of non-motorized transportation. The global benefits

of the bike paths, bike lanes, and other types of bicycle-specific infrastructure consist of a

reduction in traffic congestion and a decrease in emissions of greenhouse gasses and

other pollutants that commuters face today. Additional indirect benefits, of no less value,

demonstrate the benefits and viability of bicycles and non-motorized transport. These

findings suggest that lack of pollutions and low cost of this form of transport for

commuting will encourage the adoption and development of similar facilities elsewhere

around the world. (Jr, 2017)

The study stated the benefits of non-motorized transportation, and they consider

bike as one of it, it can reduce the traffic congestion and decrease the emission of

greenhouse gases. Thus, it is concluded that biking has a lot of positive effects in our

environment.

Scholars, practitioners and activists have been reconsidering the importance of

cycling to create sustainable transport systems. A discussion of intermodal transport

invites us to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of diverse modes, as they relate to

strategic planning decisions and particularly land use, along with considering ways that

cities could get more out of these synergies. (Sagaris, 2016)

17
According to the article, scholars, practitioners and activist consider biking as an

important part to create a sustainable transport system. Therefore, it is a strong pillars to

be held by the researchers to pursue the said rentals.

This article examines the links between the petroleum and tourism industries by

analyzing how an oil disaster, whether actual or perceived, may attract nature‐based

tourism interests. To better understand the role of communities, local governments and/or

the media in establishing links between the petroleum and tourism industries, this article

explores how the construction of an oil pipeline in Ecuador and an oil spill in the

Philippines created opportunities for tourism. Each case contributes to our understanding

of how an oil disaster supports nature‐based tourism and how both industries supply a

resource or an experience to nonlocal consumers, while converging to alter local

communities, economies, and ecosystems. Indeed, tourism investments following a

disaster may become a sideshow to the disaster that shifts attention from the disaster to

participation in new economic opportunities. (Widener, 2009)

Oil is a mineral needed, as stated above the Philippines is experiencing an oil

crisis, and in bicycle we does not need a lot of oil to make it start, therefore, to save oil is

one of the very reason why the rental is conducted.

18
